Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - We're awesome!

VAMom, I’m sure it is great to have your DS home.

FlMathMom, I’ve largely been letting him go through the standard process, but have contacted a couple of people. One says they don’t hire kids out of college, let alone kids in college. Another is not senior enough to find the right kind of position for ShawSon as he is not an software or engineering type, but the firm prides itself on hiring the best and the brightest, so something might happen. The finance and consulting internships pay salaries. Not clear the others do.

We’re taking ShawD out to dinner tonight. It will be great to hear in more detail than quick phone calls how she is adjusting to her new school.

VAMom, I have done that to two side-view mirrors in my life. Duct tape. If the mirror didn’t shatter, duct tape may be a sufficient temporary fix…

Duct tape is a cure-all for so many of life’s little ooops moments! Bluejr loves it and comes up with the best uses (fixing rm’s shoes, catching stinkbugs in the dorm, etc.).

D’s peers make purses and even clothing out of it. One had an entire duct-tape dress. To be honest, it looked uncomfortable and it made loud crinkling noises. But I admired the effort!

S2 loves duct tapes too and has made wallets out of it. They have inside pockets and inserts like the wallets have. One of his science project ideas last year was to compare the durability between the duct tape and leather wallets but he chose something else to do instead.

Congrats to your son VAMom. Enjoy his visit.

Shawdad - enjoy dinner

Congrats to VAmom’s son, If i am not mistaken he is ROTC as well so definitly major time management on his part. Hope he enjoys his rest and the beautiful Virginian weather.

Mamom~Thank you for the link to the valentine’s cookies. Something different to do this year.

Shaw~Enjoy your dinner with your D a lot to be discussed I am sure as she is starting over in a new exciting direction. It is nice of you to call upon your connections on behalf of your S. I believe that everyone needs some introduction at one point or another :D

GSmom~ Hugs to your D. At S1’s U a lot of kids want to be RA’s and there are just not enough spots for everyone. Honestly, it is a lot of responsibilities on a student and it may work out for the best in the end. Congrats on the summer job offer:D

Hope all sick kids are on the mend~Have a nice evening everyone :)

VAmom, Did you check with local junk yards for a used side view mirror? We’ve replaced ours a few times and have always been able to get a replacement that way instead of buying new.

Thanks for the internship suggestions. D1 may end up being a CS major, but since this is an out of the blue thing, with absolutely no experience/interest in it prior to last semester, an internship this summer seems unlikely.

And porkchop, welcome–D1 is also a Jumbo. :)

Whoever makes duct tape is making a killing out of it as a fashion statement. My 11yo loves the different colors and designs (pink zebra print anyone?). Of course the “designer” duct tape cost about 4X the cost of the regular tape. D has made hair bows, pocketbooks, book covers, purses, etc. No clothes yet, but she is too young for prom…

VaMom- I think the rule in MA is either a side mirror or a rear view mirror. Maybe it is still OK to drive??? til you can get a replacement.

Thanks for all the side mirror help! Duct tape was my first thought, actually! Luckily DH can fix just about anything (and enjoys doing so–he fixes things for fun and profit!!). He also was looking for a used replacement (car is 12 years old, so no new parts out there). So his solution was to epoxy the mirror back together (it was in three pieces–all plastic). This is the temporary fix until he can get a replacement part. Hopefully it will hold until the “new” one arrives!!! He has found replacements online cheaper than he could at local places.

Mamom–I’m impressed with all the things your D makes with duct tape!!! I bet she will be applying for that prom dress scholarship in a few years!!!

2Edu–yes, DS is ROTC also. Definitely had to manage his time. I hope he finds more time to participate in EC stuff this coming semester.

Mamom - duct tape scholarship is for students 14 and over so she doesn’t have long too to wait!!

Never good for a mom’s heart when you get a 1:30 am call that begins “Mom, I’m at the hospital.” Seems DS went back to room after playing basketball with some friends and last thing he remembers is feeling tired and going to lay down. That was @ 5:30. He woke up on the floor with a huge knot on his head @midnight. The RA called medical and they advised he go to hospital so he is there now with RA and a friend and I am reining in my impulse to jump in the car and drive the 2 hours to get to him. UGH…I think I aged 5 years in 5 mins.

Uggh, momofzach. I’d probably be fighting the urge to drive over and I don’t know which part of me would win. Best wishes for zach and mom.

Momofzach - please keep us posted. Our prayers and hugs are sent to you and your son.

momofzach, Let us know how your son is! I hope you have received an all clear call by now.

momofzach-best wishes to your son.

Momofzach: What a scary call. I hope your son’s okay.

Vamom: I’ve had a few close encounters between the side view mirror and our garage opening. My mirror is currently being held together with crazy glue and seems to be doing just fine. I’m going to take Kath’s suggestion and try to find a used mirror to replace it. A new one from the dealer was ridiculously expensive.

momofzach I hope he is fine. Weird situation.

Momofzach - Sending hugs to you and Zach. Hoping you have good news soon!

momjr - I hate getting in and out of our garage. Our current SUV has side mirrors that fold in remotely and it is the best thing going!

VAMom - Congratulations to your son on a good semester. That effort on top of ROTC is indeed a tremendous effort! Enjoy having him home for a few days.

gsmomma - I hope everything works out for the RA job for your DD. It’s hard to hear “you are totally qualified, we just don’t have a position right now”. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that some upperclassman will change their minds and more spots will open.

Putting out my standing offer to relieve anyone of winter weather they are tired of. Here in the mid-Atlantic we are in the mid 50’s and I am feeling cheated of my winter.
