Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - We're awesome!

ldint - congratulations! It’s great that the temp job turned permanent!
HH - facebook official uh ? Nice!

HH Great news about the BF! He sounds like a great first boyfriend bringing flowers to her concert, awesome!!! Next door to mine and Fogfogs college trying to guess which one that is. Are they in the same Freshman dorm?? I know what you mean about not commenting on anything on Facebook, I would be defriended if I became too nosey!

Indict! Awesome news about your job, its nice to have your good work noticed and to be offered a permanent job from a temp one.
Emmybet, sorry about your D’s predicament. School’s policy sounds a bit harsh, although I understand they need to house freshman I think they would give single sophomores more priority. Hopefully things will work out for her.

I do long for the days when I could just fix our kids problems but I guess its all part of growing up and learning how to stand on their own two feet.

I am beginning to get a new appreciation for all you mom’s who weathered the college process from here in the states, its crazy here. The mom’s of my 9th grade daughters friends are already trying to figure out what to do to position the kids for college! AGHHH I thought I had a few more years to not think about it!

Beautiful day here been such a warm winter!

Congratulation, Idinct, on the job! You give me hope.

Good luck on all the housing issues. It’s interesting how much variation there is among the schools. D will have good housing next year, great housing in senior year, and guaranteed but not-so-great housing in junior year. Go figure.

It is interesting how much variation there is on housing among schools. At both of my D’s schools, sophomores have the lowest priority. D2’s lottery is in a few weeks. She recently spoke to a sophomore who told her that you can switch mid-year if you end up in an undesirable room. A lot of juniors go abroad second semester so things open up. That made her less stressed about things.

D texted me Tuesday night saying the screen on her phone was broken, as was the ear piece. She could text out, without seeing what she was typing, but could not read texts or hear anybody on the phone.

So, I went and got her a new phone yesterday and got it mailed off. THEN she emails me and says that everything is shut down from Saturday through Tuesday in New Orleans for Mardi Gras and she won’t get mail during that time, so I should wait to mail the phone so she can at least text out before her broken phone is turned off so the phone number can go on the new phone.

I surely hope her new phone gets there tomorrow before the city shuts down. I guess Mardi Gras is a state holiday in Louisiana, but I didn’t know state holidays could shut down federal things like the mail.

bajamm - good luck with the phone. Perhaps mail delivery still occurs but maybe the school employees have the “holiday” off so the mailroom is closed?

At S’s school fresh and soph must live in dorms on campus unless their home is within commuting distance. Jr and Sr’s live in apts rented either from the school or local landlords. Seems like the school has been buying up a lot of local apts and much of the local non dorm housing is now owned by the school. So while the kids get a taste of living on their own, they are within blocks of the campus. Actually, a lot of the apt housing is still within the boundaries the security folks patrol.

bajamm - Sure hope the phone gets there in time. Yes, Mardi Gras is bigger then any federal holiday in Nola! Your daughter is in for a real experience!!! :D

bajamm, Isn’t it crazy how dependent they are on their phones! I just had to do the new phone thing yesterday also! Imagine having to use email! Those poor kids. I think my son has a “real” phone in his room, but claims they don’t know where it is because they don’t use it. Instead he emails me and I guess I’m supposed to constantly check my email? I only have a dumbphone so I can’t do it while I’m out.

Anyway, his school is close enough that I picked him up and we went to BBuy, where they were very helpful and used an upgrade to replace his phone. He switched from a BBerry to an Android (Samsung Stratosphere). I think now he is wondering why he ever thought he wanted to keep the BBerry! It is such a cool phone w/slide out keyboard. We went to dinner afterwards and it was nice. He says this girl who is probably transferring to his school is his “friend”. He says she is like his best friend (not sure if that is best female or overall). But she phoned while we are dinner and his face lit up like I’ve rarely seen. I’m happy if he has such a great friend. I know in HS he had some female friends that he really liked to hang out with and never went “out” with them because he didn’t want to ruin the friendship.

Hope your D gets her phone ok. I’m sure she is dying without it. My S sent his swimming in a puddle in December and it finally bit the dust after a slow death. SO he drops his phone and when it dies I run right out to rescue him?! That’s what mommies do. He better take amazing care of this one because next upgrade is almost 2 years! I am going to file the CSI insurance claim. I’m telling the truth about the slow death and hope they pay. Next decision is whether to insure the new phone thru Verizon or best Buy. It seems so much more breakable than a Balckberry. Bajamm, What phone did you get your D?

I got an email from one of my daughter’s friends Mother that her husband was standing in front of my S’s school. He was out there on business. She said she told him to look for Kevin, haha. A half hour later I get a text message from Kevin telling me he saw the Dad at dunkin donuts. too funny. I usually don’t recognize folks I know when I see them in unexpected places…like 1100 miles away.

I saw a neighbor’s son in McDonalds and didn’t even notice he was someone I knew until he waved. I would have walked right on by.

Rescue from page 2!
DS settled his summer - taking an 8-week course that will give him breadth and which he could not otherwise fit in until senior year so happy about that. Expensive but told him last summer we will “sponsor” him.
Housing is next challenge. Lottery like many other schools and not enough beds for all kids, esp with expected uptick in incoming freshman class. DS desperately wants to remain on campus altho there are school-owned apts nearby. The two strategies seem to be to organize group for a suite or to join a theme house. He is thinking about both. Does seem needlessly stressful. Always something…

D called me today to tell me about her academic advising day. No classes are scheduled today so that students can meet with an advisor in their major plan out their schedule for next year. There is also a large career fair for summer jobs held today also. She had already tentatively planned out her schedule, but noticed that there was a conflict between the “Tentative class” schedule for her minor, and the classes offered on the Registrar’s website. She told me that it was confusing, so she went to the Registrar’s office to see if they could help. They directed her to the Humanities department. She said that the secretary was very nice, and had D log into her computer, since the staff can not see the student scheduling website. The secretary printed out the discrepancy, and showed the head of the department. He came out and thanked D for bringing it to their attention and it will be fixed.

I was so proud that she was able to navigate the process and get it fixed. It is amazing what a few months can do for self confidence.

LIKE^

HH Doesn’t your DD just going into the res college? Why would Jr yr be less desirable?

All well at the U–mid terms first round were this week. More to come.

On the home front my hs student is pretty sick. MD just changed antibiotic and kiddo2 will be doing nebulizer treatments. Sadly with 4 days out from school it puts kiddo2 waaaay behind.

Bathroom reno started.
Negotiating with pest control about lawn and trees/shrubs maintenance…
FAFSA and CSS Profile etc will be done sooner or later–the tax package is at the accts.

On the upside I went for a glycoloc peel today so should be “in the pink” by next week  Yay me.

@fogfog. D’s college is the smallest one, so can’t house most of its juniors. They wind up back on Old Campus in a building which is less than the palatial accommodations they have become accustomed to, or they go off campus.

@mamom: how funny is that? Hope this semester continues on an upswing.

D GOT HER PHONE TODAY! yay.

NJFootball mom, I got my D a dumb phone that has a slide out qwerty keyboard and touch screen. Actually, we all have dumb phones, none of us have ever had a smart phone. I want to get D internet access son her phone in April for her birthday, H doesn’t see the point. Of course, he just figured out how to send emails about 6 months ago. I may go ahead and do it anyway.

fog - hope kiddo2 recovers quickly.

bajamm - I got my first smart phone last June and love, love, love it. It is amazing what these little gadgets can do. Glad your D got her replacement phone.

Sent taxes off to acct earlier this week. Only need to fill out fafsa if S needs a loan next fall so I am going to wait til we get taxes back to fill out the fafsa. If S performs so poorly at school that he loses his scholarship and needs a loan, he won’t be back where he is anyway in the fall.

Friday yet? This is the longest week.

So if they didn’t give us money last year, and our income is the same, do we have to fill out the FAFSA and CSS again? I am assuming not…

^I don’t think so.

^ I dont think so…though you could call the fin aid office and ask.

Unless the college’s fin aid policies have changed an your income has changed, it is likely not helpful.

DH used the “new” fin aid calc at the U (the web site hasn’t had one for more than 2 yrws) and we wonder why - using last years numbers - why oh why kiddo didn’t get more aid…almsot 25% more than this year… Reminded me how those calcualtors estimate stuff and with rpofile you get stuff added back/penalize.
This years policies at the U changed as did our circumstances. Have no clue where the aid will land.

A stressful year economically and no idea where 2012 is going. Sigh… :(

Bringing us back to Page #1. :D
