Thanks for the pancakes!
DS is coming home for break 3/10-18; I think he’ll just sleep
He wasn’t going to originally, but I think he’s found his campus rather lonely during vacation weeks and we were able to find inexpensive fares so all set.
Next time home - at the end of freshman year - wow!
Have a great long weekend!

D1 has classes on Monday, but will be coming home late Tuesday evening through Wednesday, since she has no classes on Wednesday and has a doctor’s appointment. Although we visited her twice at school this term, this will be her first time home since we dropped her off in January.

Yesterday, I spent a fun and productive day with D2’s Girl Scout troop. I am the Cookie Mom and arranged for them to sell cookies at the Harvard Square T station. The place was mobbed, and they sold over 500 boxes in 4 hours, and ended up selling out of all of the boxes I brought. That is a lot of thin mints.

The girls did get an education as they were waiting for me to arrive with the cookies. Members of the Harvard Hasty Pudding Club were performing (in full drag) in the middle of Harvard Square. When they noticed the girls, one of them said “I used to be a Girl Scout!”

wish I had been there. I used to be the cookie mom for D’s troop. The girls and other Mom’s are lucky to have you, it is a lot of work.

S’s spring break is March 9th to the 18th. We are scrambling for a cheap fare, but the fare’s don’t seem to fluctuate much. If we had him take Amtrak to Chicago we would have more luck but once you factor in the train fare and time that isn’t worth it either. S says he is going home with a local friend at Easter.
I need absolute confirmation, unfortunately, S will not let me call up the friends parents to confirm.
I guess I will be spending a fortune mailing his Easter basket.

Have not heard from S1 in ages so have no idea if he has Monday off or not. I know he is Ok because he and S2 text each other…
I got an email from his landlord next year inviting me to register to pay rent online. He and three friends will be sharing a two bedrooms two baths unfurnished apartment off campus. The total of 12 months rent will be a little less than half of what we paid this year for his room and board on campus. Bless his heart, he told me last time when we talked that he just needs a mattress to sleep on and will take our old folding game table for dining.

Have a great Sunday everyone and I am waithing for Mavs game to start. :)

Morning all
Pancakes and Cappucninos in our house too.

Question: My washing machine has “reversed” its temp controls this am. I was washing all of kiddo2s bedding after a night of high fever/sweats…
and the pillow/sheets were unbalanced.
So it seemingly jarred something. Now the cold setting is Hot, and the hot setting cool.
Any ideas? We tried unplugging it. Restarting it, etc etc. No change so far.

I hope to resolve this without a repairman service call…

Ya know, I hadn’t really thought about it but now that you mention it…We’ve communicated a lot less with D this semester. We seem to need less checking in and she doesn’t seem to need us at all, lol! I wonder if this is how it will go and next year we will talk even less?

Back in the day, I called my parents only once a week and there was no “messaging” of any kind in between. I guess I’m just so used to knowing the ins and outs of D’s daily activities that it’s been an adjustment but I’m getting there slowly

My D has Monday off of classes, but it’s not because it is President’s Day, it is because it is Mardi Gras in NOLA! Everything is shut down Saturday through Tuesday for Mardi Gras. I don’t know if the have President’s day off or not when Mardi Gras is a week later or earlier.

D’s spring break is March 10 - 18. She is going to Floriday for most of it for club rowing spring training. She will be back in NOLA for a regatta on March 17/18. Since S’s spring break is March 16 (yes, it starts on a Friday) through March 25, we will drive down to NOLA on the 16th to watch the regatta, then do some sight seeing.

D doesn’t have classes on Thursdays and has Friday and Monday off at Easter, so will come home for a long weekend then, that will be the only time she is home for this semester.

Set it to hot when you want cold, and cold when you want hot?

Fog–That’s bizarre. It seems like that wouldn’t be possible. It happened to me once but that’s because the movers hooked up the hot and cold hoses backwards (hot on cold tap). I hope you figure out how to reset its brain!

DS had his best friend from West Point visit, then they went to NYC for the weekend. Friend called his dorm “cozy”. I told him that translated to “messy” since at WP everything must be in it’s proper place at all times! They had a great time and DS found out the magic secret of where to stay in NYC!!! Active duty soldiers have a place they can stay that is only $30 a night–score!!! So they stayed there and it was very convenient to everything. They went and saw Rocky Horror Show for the first time for either of them–quite entertaining. They also went to the Met and ate lots of food (of course). DS is already planning a return trip and hopefully will get to see a broadway show.

He checked at Lost & Found in NYC and still no bag. I think it’s a gonner, but he’s still trying to call around to see if it’s turned up. He found out that they supposedly keep the bags for 60 days (we thought it was 30) so he’s holding out hope. His Orthodontist said he needs to get retainers replaced soon, though. Now I have to figure out whether to try and find somewhere close to school for him to get them or wait until spring break, which isn’t until Mar 17th.

Enjoy your college students who are coming home for spring break! How is it almost March already???

I had the hot/cold water mixup happen to my entire apartment once (obviously a hook-up issue). I called maintenance and they assured me that that was impossible. I had a nice heated toilet for a while until they decided to believe me and check it out
(No, I wasn’t paying for my own hot water!)

I was just on our bank’s website and found out they are open today. Is that a new thing for banks to be open on federal holidays?

fogfog I hope your son feels better soon.

It sounds like your washing machine may have spun out of control and knocked some switch out-I can’t imagine the problem would be from the water supply if it was OK before that.

Morning…
I am guessing it is a “switch” problem too-- ie an elecrtical switch. Sigh. REally don’t want to pay for a service call for the part…

Years back my inlaws built a new house. Upstairs in the guest rooms bath–the toilet had hot steamy water…The plumbers had run the hot water to the toilet. Every time you opened the toilet lid- steam came out. They had to have the wall in the bedroom opened up to fix it. Imagine–keeping hot water in a toile tank etc…expensive!

Kiddo2 seems to be on the mend. Fever “broke” on Sat night. Horribel cough with chest congestion—Was feeling better yesterday yet not as well today. Has a ton of school work and homework to make up. Hoping today is used wisely. I am out of the house today so not there to monitor the “progress”

Spring break–kiddo1 will be at the U as the team uses the 2 weeks for training. So no real break–they stay in the dorm rooms, train all day, the school feeds them well. Sleep. Repeat.
Kiddo2 and I will be making a quick trip to PA, DE and MD to see a few schools. DH will join us in DC for a couple of days of fun. I didn’t realize until making reservations and thinking about restaurants that we hit “St Patricks Day” over the break…had planned on taking kiddo2 to this Irish restaurant for a meal etc…they have music, sing etc. However, with the holiday not only will it be packed–it will be too rowdy. Will change plans for that night.

Well fogfog as a daughter of Ireland I highly recommend keeping those reservations! Nothing like St. Patricks Day spent with the Irish among us! :)

I am with you Pepper - keep that reservation, I think it will be a lot of fun.

fog- why call to have it repaired, you can still use it, and you do get hot and cold. I wouldn’t callyet. Glad Kiddo2 is felling better.

fogfog, my suggestion is to run it a few times with the controls reversed by you (ie: set to cold when you want hot and visa versa). See what happens, another spin cycle or two might end up with it reverting back to the original format. I hate having to pay for service calls come out so much I’ll do anything to jerry-rig an appliance until absolutely forced to make that call.

Here’s a question for you all with girls. S2 has been invited to a “swanky”(his words) birthday party in NYC for a girl he knows at school. It’s in a venue that as far as I can tell is mostly used for weddings etc, and from the web site, I’m thinking his use of the word swanky is spot on…
… He tells me that a mutual friend who is also going says this type of invite will be requiring a “legit”(also his words) gift. So my mission (of course this falls to me, lol) is to find a nice, (somewhat pricey) gift for a girl who is a friend. Any suggestions?

S2 is coming home for spring break, it will be great to see him, since we now know he’ll be in Europe for the summer. S1 is visiting his girlfriend for his spring break, but we have decided to fly to his school for Easter to see him, so we’ll be checking in in person with both boys in the coming weeks.

yalemom - wrt a “legit” gift. I suspect that a $25 GC to some clothing store, itunes, a coffee shope, etc would be sufficient. I would be surprised if more was expected. S was invited to several high end Bar mitzvah’s while in middle school and the $25 GC seemed to be “the gift” from the non jews. I think there is something special about multiples of $18 and many of the Jewish kids gave GC in multiples of 18.

^Thanks for the input mamom, fwiw this is a 21st birthday party

^ hmmm, thought it was a HS kid. Well, I guess it depends on how well he knows her. She will be graduating this year??? Maybe something fun to decorate her new apt when she leaves school, assuming she will be graduating and moving out of parents house. You could get something fun at Pier One, Home Goods etc, that won’t break the bank. Or a nice set of wine glasses, martini glass, etc since she is turing 21. You could put them in a nice basket and decorate it up.

Happy day off to those with the day off. This is my first paid holiday in 2 years, exciting.

Unfortunately it looks like I’m back to requesting the daily 11 am text from S2. He’s still missing classes. He doesn’t have a class until noon & he still is having a problem. It is really too bad. The noon class he’s doing well grade-wise, but he will be dinged for missing class. His 300 level class was harder than he expected, really- what did you think? He has a disastrous first test grade, with only a mid-term & final to catch up.

I mentioned I wasn’t going to check his grades since I thought he had learned his lesson last semester with having to work so hard at the end to pull his grades up, but I guess not. I checked about 25% in and I’m still seeing the same issues. We had a heart to heart and I thought things would improve, but he’s still missing classes. The grades are better though than last semester so he is studying. He will be on scholarship probation if he doesn’t get a 3.0, so it is a big issue, one C is a disaster. Why is getting to class so hard? I am wondering if he is staying up most of the night? That was a problem in HS Sr year as well, chatting with all his friends in different time zones.

We are going to have to discuss majors & other issues when he comes home for spring break. Pre-med doesn’t make sense anymore. You have to have at least a 3.7 and he’s struggling for a 3.0. Now he has backed himself into a corner. He can’t even explore some other things with the grade pressure.

I hate having to be on him all the time. It can’t be great for him as it isn’t great for me. I never checked his grades in hs or read any of his papers. It was on the semester system, so we saw the grades 2x year. He pretty much just did the minimum and studied for tests. But, he never missed school, probably only 1 day or less per year. I was there to drag him out of bed and drive him to school. He didn’t get his license until senior year as he is young. He probably would have been better off taking a few years off before college grade-wise, but H was adamantly opposed as he didn’t finish college as he was making $$$ and didn’t feel at the time it was important, a decision he sorely regrets. I didn’t do well in college at 17/18 either & I am pretty much watching a replay.
