Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - We're awesome!

we’ve done our fafsa and profile, still need to mail in tax returns to the school. Hopefully I can get that done next week. April 15 is the deadline. Our income was considerably less last year, so hoping for more aid.

fog, I remember my d’s freshman and sophomore years of hs. She missed 25+ days each year and had to work hard to get stuff in. I remember being ticked both years, different schools in different states, there were always teachers that put 0’s in because she hadn’t turned something in on time. She was absent the day it was due and had been absent for several days before that. They had the option of listing it as missing. They put 0’s in instead. We got it figured out, it was just annoying. Then her sophomore year she lost open campus privileges and was getting letters from the truant officer for missing so much school, even though most of the absences were backed up with doctor documentation.

I was glad when she graduated, just to not have to worry about being in trouble with the truant officer just because she had a chronic medical problem…

for the introverts and parents of introverts: [Introverts run the world – quietly - CNN.com](http://www.cnn.com/2012/03/18/opinion/cain-introverts-power/index.html?hpt=hp_t2)

Sorry to hear about the sicknesses and injuries. fogfog I hope your son gets better soon. My daughter would also be considered an elite athlete but I had never heard there are injuries they may get that regular athletes don’t. Should I be concerned about this?

My daughter is going to the midnight showing of the Hunger Games tomorrow with friends. She will be going to school Friday whatever her condition.

Wow - should make for an interesting day at school on Friday. D mentioned that she and her friends wanted to go for the midnight showing - but apparently, 3 of them ended up having to host prospective freshmen! So, the midnight showing is off and they are going on Friday evening for dinner and then the movie. Kind of a mini celebration for D’s birthday on Monday. Sigh…thinking of the birthday makes me sad…have a box of stuff to send to her tomorrow, but still - will be the first birthday that I haven’t been there to wake her up :(

Anyone else have this dilemma? I just realized that I got a groupon last fall for a quart of chicken soup, fuzzy socks and I think some cookies. I was going to use it in the winter to send to my son in Vermont. Surely there would be a time when it was snowy and blowy and not close to a break. Well, that didn’t happen this year and now it’s NOT soup season. I am just going to have to mail myself some chicken soup!

I’m going to the Hunger Games movie with some friends from work next Monday night. We’re hoping the frenzy will have subsided somewhat by then. We will not be going to a midnight showing. :)

KathieP, LOL, what a crazy non-winter we had this year! It’s supposed to be cold and rainy soon, maybe he would like it then. Or maybe save it in case he gets a cold?

I’m pretty sure I don’t want to see the Hunger Games movie. The books were disturbing enough.

Hi everyone, I’ve been trying to catch up on the thread, but not super successfully. Arisamp, congrats on your son’s scholarship!! Empty nester-hood is surprisingly survivable, you’ll be fine!

fogfog, I think the shocked emoticon is (colon)eek(colon), like this , although knowing how to do it doesn’t make the $$'s situation any better. We’re just finishing up year 1 of paying 2 tuitions, one more year of that and then we’ll be down to 1 tuition for 2 last years- and then we’re done!!! Gotta say the double pay years do kind of take your breath away.

S2 (Yalie) was home for most of spring break, he was not happy that some other plans of his didn’t work out and he was stuck here, but he ended up having a great time (the blessing of low expectations?). S1(junior) is visiting gf for spring break in Europe, lucky guy…

Hugs to everyone with sick/injured kiddos!

Kathiep-I bought several of the chicken soups when someone let us know about that groupon. I sent one to DS during finals after 1st semester, he appreciated it, although he laughed at the pink fuzzy socks and the “rock” (inspirational stone). I sent one to a good friend in another state for her January birthday and she loved it. Even if it’s getting warm, I’m sure anyone would appreciate the thought (even you!)

DS is home for spring break. We’ve been enjoying him. He and I went downtown DC on Monday and saw the cherry blossoms. Then we walked to the Art Museum and saw “The Art of Video Games”. They had a bunch of the gaming systems and gave information on some of the favorite games from each system. It was fun. They also had several games you could play on huge screens in one room.

We’ve been chosen for verification due to income change and it seems like it will be really easy, I thought it would be much more complex. We had to fill out a form that basically states or family makeup and whether we did or didn’t file tax returns. Then we had to either use the data retrieval tool or send in tax transcripts for our D and us. So since we did the data retrieval successfully, it’s just a matter of filling out one form. Easy peasy. I hope I’m not missing something here.

Last year we needed to do FAFSA and the CSS, plus other forms for some of the colleges D1 was accepted. This year, we only needed to do the FAFSA and a basic form from the college. Thank goodness we didn’t need to do the profile again. I doubt that we will get anything, since we received nothing last year, but we need to file for D1 to get the student loan.

Buncha Johnnie-and-Jane-come-lately’s. <cue: boy,="" the="" way="" glenn="" miller="" played…=""></cue:>

Have survived:

graduation honors
first job
PhD applications
half of first year in PhD program

What I’m trying to tell y’all is just when you think you’re Done, other hurdles with which you emotionally engage pop up. Think of a shooting gallery but completely different. Now go and be completely demoralized.

That’s what a colleague told me. At this point, I cannot see that far - it’s too difficult! I keep focusing on getting through the day, taking care of the routine tasks - pretending that August is far far away :(

I agree with this - although S does want to go see it. Seeing it makes it more disturbing in my mind. D was very thrilled today that her prospie canceled her visit - so now, she can go to the midnight premiere of the show!

hahaha sounds like “whack a mole”…

As for Hunger Games…didn’t read the book - it’s not my genre…
and both DH and I think the film looks creepy enough…to not have an interest.
I just can’t spend the $ to feed stuff like that to my brain/heart/spirit.
YMMV

So here on the home front,
worked out 4 days this week!!
the house is clean
laundry completed
the dog has been bathed/clipped at the groomer
and I just returned from treating myself to a mani/pedi :)

On finding summer internships: DS (a CS major) is pursuing some opportunities he found through career services and a couple of career fairs at school. I know I’ve seen on CC pointers to a few good websites for searching for CS summer employment. Anyone here have any hints? He’s flexible about location as long as he can earn enough to cover his living expenses and net the $3K his school expects him to earn for the summer to contribute to his educational costs.

I’ve been looking for my son too and have had good luck just googling, “tech internships, Southeast Pennsylvania” You could do the same with Boston, or whatever city would work. Many of them do seem to specify older students. Lockheed Martin has quite a few openings in different locations.

Fwiw - search indeed dot com - with intern computer - it’s a consolidator job site pulling listings from employer websites as well as standard monster career builder type sites.

I know the feeling well!! Take heart though, I found that much like getting a shot or going to the dentist, the anticipation of the event is WAY more traumatic than the actual occurrence of the event. These next months will be the hardest for you, and then it will be okay, trust me :)

Thanks, Amanda. I think that was the site someone told me before and I couldn’t find it again.

Sorry to hear about the health issues and grade issues, hopefully everything will work out, still trying to catch up from my time away so sorry if I am missing anything important!

Haven’t posted in a few weeks, doing so now to say HI and to keep myself awake because I got suckered into taking 9th grade D and friends to the Hunger Games. Just finished the book yesterday and have to say am really excited to see the movie. Fog Fog, I did not want to read it and thought the story line was horrifying but it was actually a very well written good story, I could not put it down. I must say I loved it and have already started book 2~

Had a wonderful 2 weeks with D3 and week with D1, was very low key, weather was beautiful, took walks, sat on Beach (yes in Maryland in March- amazing weather but afraid of how hot the summer will be!) etc. My kids unfortunately have no friends here because we just moved here (sad for them) I am hoping they will meet some as we live in a great tourist town with lots of fun places to hang out and it would be nice for them to get out and enjoy it!

Anyway, will let you know how the movie is…Good Night to all you who will get to sleep tonite!

Off to take a quick nap before I take D and her friend to see the Hunger Games. I have heard good things about the movie, so I am very excited.

S is adament about not coming home for Easter. I just picked up some stuff for his basket to mail to him. He says he will be going home with a relatively local friend, but no definite plans yet. Why can’t there be plans two weeks out??? Gosh. When I send the basket is determined by whether he stays or leaves school. I guess I will have to figure he is leaving for Easter. Basket will contain candy, but I usually also put other things such as books in it. This year I think it will just be candy and money. He will appreciate the money more.

After speaking with his advisor he is dropping accounting. She told him he whould be able to hold onto his almost full tuition scholarship. He saw the school therapist who agreed with him that he need to study better and maybe see a tutor. ???&&&*** Really?? A kid with EFD and we are going along with the “I know how to handle this” even though he has proved he doesn’t? I am having no luck finding someone outside the school with experience in EFD who can help. More phone calls Friday I guess. I am off work so I can at least speak to these folks in private. All in all H & I decided he will probably be back at his school next year by the skin of his teeth. May be a good thing, may not.
