Afternoon all

Just guessing the scholarship sent to the school could go to legit tuition expenses etc and she’d pay no tax…

fog,

I think she’d only pay no tax if it went for tuition, tax needs to be paid if it goes towards room and board. She had all tuition covered this year with scholarships and grants. If it is going to be taxed anyway, then she may rather have it to pay for books and other necessary incidentals. I need to see what the aid package is for next year to know if she will get the same need based grants for tuition before we decide.

found us on the bottom of page 2. With all of the acceptance, rejection and waitlist threads, and a few upset parents threads as well, we sink down the page fairly quickly. But I am fine with that as I don’t have to go through the chaos of the decision process this year!

VAMOM - congrats on the speedy road to recovery!

I am also very glad to be on this side of the decision process- over the ravine and part way up the mountain! Last year at this time (give or take a week) we were doing accepted college visits and yesterday, my son was participating in one. I found out when I checked my fb page and there was a picture and post from his college welcoming the accepted students and there he was in the center of the picture! He called a little later and said that he had a good time talking to the prospective newcomers.

His housing lottery is Tuesday. He has a roommate who has a high draw number so they should get the dorm they want. I’m happy to put off the off campus housing for as long as possible. I’m thinking that won’t be until senior year since he wants to do a study abroad Junior year and that works out better with on-campus housing for the one semester.

How many of you have kids coming home for Easter? My son doesn’t have any days off before or after and it’s a seven hour drive/ten hour public transportation trip away from home, so there is no way for him to come home. I’ll send up some candy this week. Any boy suggestions for an Easter goodie selection?

My D will be coming home for Easter on Thursday and returning on Monday. The school is closed Friday and Monday for Easter and she doesn’t have any classes on Thursdays this semester, so it worked out well.

I am not buying the kids a lot for Easter this year. I bought just a little chocolate, some protein bars and some dried fruit to fill baskets. D’s birthday is in a couple of weeks and S’s birthday is in May, so I will get them more then.

Good morning! Hazelnut coffee on for this gloomy Sunday morning in PA. No days off around Easter for Scoutson, either, but I’ll drive up to my sister’s house in NY for the holiday on Friday, then on up to pick him up on Saturday so we’ll see him for 24 hours or so. And he’s packing up winter and whatever stuff he won’t need for the next month so I can take it back home - yes, starting the move out already!

It’s actually going to be a pain to move out - he needs to be out by noon on 5/9 - which is a Wednesday - and has an exam at 5pm on 5/8. So I’ll need to take off a day of work, probably 2, to drive up and back. Why require move out on a WEDNESDAY?! Oh, well, at least he’ll be home for Mother’s Day before he goes back in early June to start his summer course. Hope gas prices don’t get much higher in the near future…

But all the driving will be better than last year’s trip on the S.S. Indecision, when we almost went down with the ship!

YUM Hazelnut coffe, Thanks Scoutmom!

Did the “submit” on the CSS Profile for the coming yr as well as FAFSA.
FAFSA EFC is always so scary!

So now we plan to get the docs ready for the IDOC submit.
Interestingly the requests for docs (on the Us direct website) for continuing students seem different than what we did last year as a frosh…and DH is frustrated because last yrs instructions for frosh didn’t include all of the forms we had to scramble to submit (like the "no I didn’t submit a tax return–student forms)
DH wants me to call the finaid office at the U…I cringe at that and stirring the pot…still necessary.

Hoping you all (and we) get the aid needed for 2012.

Heading into the 4th quarter with k2 and so time to focus on regaining the ground given up in the 3rd…I have also put a call into the academic dean to meet.

No lottery ticket purchasing here…I didn’t even know there was a big lottery coming up hahaha. Even so I don’t buy them. I bought one once. My MiL buys one occassionally and I think she is in the black payout over expense…winning $20 here and there…

This year’s SS Indecision cruise sets sail tomorrow. I am glad to announce that I will not be at the helm this year! I rotate back onto the bridge in 2 years. :D

S will not be home for Easter. He has a couple of days off and is going to visit GF at her school in KY. He has a frequent flyer ticket that cost him $10 and some of his miles. He can’t come home because it is DD’s spring break and we are leaving for a week’s vacation. He is not happy about missing our trip but he will have fun on his trip.

His housing lottery was this weekend but we haven’t heard anything yet. His roomate was handling the selection as he was out of town at a sports tournament. It’s hard to believe that I will be picking him up to come home in just 6 weeks. Where did the second semester go? Where did the freshman year go?

Avon~So glad to leave the SS Indecision behind after two back to back trips. Our kids are nicely settle in their U, and loving almost every minute of it!

No breaks for Easter, but will visit S1 shortly thereafter for a big celebration on The University Grounds. Looking forward to that :)

S2 picked his room…a big double on the top floor with exceptional views of the campus…Already then ;)

Wishing all a peaceful Sunday :D

Well, we sailed aboard the SS Indecision three times once with ShawSon and then last year and then this year again with ShawD. She’s much happier with her academic life. She’s doing really well in all of her courses as far as I know, but that is a combination of the nursing courses aiming toward something practical and lesser competition in the other courses.

Most interesting to us is that ShawD sort of wants to skip the whole “I am not sure where I’m headed,” serious partying college years. She’s doing what is needed with the GenEd courses but has little patience for them. While she likes nursing school, she says, “Look. Nursing school isn’t supposed to be fun. It is supposed to train us for handling life and death situations. I want to do it as fast as possible so that I can do what I like, which is working with people.” She’s been looking to become a roommate in a 3 or 4 bedroom apartment (after her roommate arrangement fell through). As I mentioned, it seemed like buying a condo rather than renting might make sense so yesterday, we looked at condos yesterday with her. We were pushing more for student-y neighborhoods that were funky. She was looking with an eye to “I could continue to live here after I graduate if I get a job in one of the Harvard hospitals.” She seems to want to get to the adult stage fairly quickly.

Socially, while she’s met nice kids, she doesn’t have anyone to spend weekends with. Some of her friends are years older – they’ve come back to school after a bacherlors and work experience and have chosen to study nursing. They are at very different stages in life. Other students don’t do much socializing. She says there’s a really nice girl in the dorm room next door who studied for the two weeks before their latest Anatomy & Physiology exam. She and ShawD both got the top score of 102, but ShawD studied for two days. Without weekend buddies, she comes home or calls her friends at Harvard and has made a couple of events there. There, I think she gets self-protective; she said she had received several texts/invitations from a couple of guys she met at a party there. I don’t think she’s taken up any of the invitations she’s gotten from them. Instead she spent yesterday evening with the daughter of a family with who our family is close. She graduated from my alma mater 1.5 years ago and is working before heading off to do “do-gooding” work in Southeast Asia for the NGO started by another friend of ours (and to whom we introduced her).

Anyway, no more indecision for ShawD. She’s going full speed ahead into nursing and I hope/expect that her social life will take care of itself. She’d be better off in some community where guys were there and interaction was more natural. She will get a fair bit of attention for her looks and while she likes to look good, but at the end of the day, friendships with guys like she had in HS, possibly leading to relationships, will be more rewarding.

EAO: So, are we all making reservations somewhere fun for our big meet up? ![]()
I too had no idea that our state was even in the lottery- so I ventured nothing and lost nothing…I think, had I been aware, I might have bought $10 worth, just for the fun of it. Saw the stats today in the paper, 170 million ‘losers’, ah well, I bet a lot of hopefuls are back to the grindstone today.

S2 is not coming home for Easter- sent him a “basket” of goodies- it’s weird to think they have less than 4 weeks of classes before reading week and finals, where did the year go?! There appears to be a gf in the picture now, a junior (?!) S2 has always been a bit precocious…don’t know how this new development will factor into his overseas internship- no doubt he’ll manage!

Kathiep–thanks for the well wishes for DS2. He’s really done much better than expected. He’s feeling pretty good, but still taking it easy. He’s getting antsy, which means he’s feeling good.

So glad not to be on the SS Indecision this year.

Still haven’t heard from DS1 on his room draw. DS2 sent him an email with an April fools joke (said we let him move into DS1’s room and moved DS1 to DS2’s room). Thought he’d reply to that one even if he figured out it was a joke! :)

Yalemom15, I did win, but only 2 dollars for picking the mega number! I actually bought 21 tickets so in the end it cost me 19 dollars to fantasize about all the things I would do with that money. Had a lot of non-profits planned! Oh well, it was fun while it lasted. D3 (class 15) and my son bought tickets together with their roommates, son said, I am fine with 10% of 645 million, otherwise that is too much money! I called my oldest D to remind her to buy a ticket and she said “I am not buying a ticket, lotteries are for people who don’t understand statistics” I told her lotteries are for optimists, someone has to win despite the odds! At least someone from my state won!

No one is coming home for Easter but we are heading up the following weekend as Hubby is running he Boston Marathon and we are picking up D3 on the way up, other kid at Harvard will be hosting her sibs and the kids will all run in the Boston 5 k on the day before then we will all root on Dad on Monday, Should be fun. Me I will be rooting them all on! Have a great week!

Page3 rescue
Guess everyone is busy with other stuff this morning!

D was much happier this weekend after some good games - hated to do it, but had to remind her that sports is often a roller coaster. She understood but was happy that she took full advantage of the opportunity when it came her way. Talking of sports - anyone watch the NCAA championships? What a game last night with Notre Dame and UConn…

S is excited about heading to boarding school in August. But he got some not-so-good news about his health last week. His RA is back and he is now on regular medication to try and control it. Dang it - I am not so sure about sending him away to boarding school while he is on the medication. Will have to talk to the health center folks about this. His doctor here is also going to try and find another doc closer to his school for us to be in touch with, just in case of emergencies. Didn’t ever think we’d be headed down this road…S is very optimistic, thinks the next five months are good enough for him to get used to the medication regimen and any potential side effects. Wish I had more of his upbeat attitude!

We are going to visit D at school this weekend. We couldn’t meet up for her birthday 2 weeks ago and I am headed out of the country on work next week. So figured we’d sneak in a visit with her. S is coming too, although he is not thrilled with driving 22 hours to visit with her for 22 hours as he puts it
We will be with her for almost 48, not 22 hours!

Happy news from DS last night - he was accepted into the “theme dorm” he had applied for and got a low lottery number which should ensure him a single; he draws tomorrow and will know for sure. He even told me he’d let me know right away and he has never, ever contacted me except on required Sundays! Maybe saying he’d let me know was an April Fool’s joke :)

Arisamp - sorry about the health of your son. Most boarding schools I know have excellent health facilities and contacts with local physicians.

Anyone heard from Military Mom?

hahaha Arisamp…
we too are visiting with our student as it’s been since Christmas and k1 won’t be back to town til mid to late-May at the earliest…
I am resisting totally up the cost of 3 air fares, a rental car, hotel in 2 cities (we fly into one–see a team event, then drive to the U) meals etc including brunch with k1 and the roommmate for Easter…I cannot imagine what the cost per hr (for about 24 hrs) will be!!!
This is one of those times when DH asks and I will say, don’t ask. Just enjoy it!

Praying Military Mom and her sweet DD get some news and a roadmap to bring her back to health. What a long and difficult few months.

Shaw, It is so great that your DD knows herself well and has found her niche in her chosen field. Great nurses are such a blessing!

EAO, when do you travel? We will likely cross paths again and this time on the same side of the river!

Yalemom, so what did your son diecide to do for the summer? You have mentioned some language immersion things right? And a program in a pretty exotic place. What did he decide?

Good luck to everyone in the housing lottery…between that and the Profile etc it is quite a season!

Pouring jasmine green tea…enjoy

EAO- That’s impressive that your husband is running the Boston Marathon!! Best of luck to him. Also, congrats on your ‘winning’ ticket :D

Arisamp- sorry to hear about your son’s health issues, but love his attitude! My sister in law has had type 1 diabetes since she was 10. College was no big deal for her because she ‘owned’ her condition. She managed it because she had to, it sounds like your son is headed toward a similar resolution- good for him!

fogfog- You remember correctly, at one point last fall he was talking about a summer internship in Kabul- thankfully that did not materialize as conditions there have deteriorated even more now than they had last fall. In January he applied for and was accepted to a summer internship working for a European political think-tank. So he’ll be working in a decidedly first-world country in Europe this summer- huzzah!!! He is applying for cost of living scholarships as this position is non-paying, but odds are good he’ll get his expenses covered. We’re hoping for a net-zero summer: no money in, but also no money out!

Really could have used that Megamillions! D3 (yale) is doing a summer thing, 5 weeks in New Haven and 5 weeks in Europe. Instead of staying at Yale she is subleting an apartment with 6 other girls, much cheaper than Yale’s room and board, she is using some subsidy from Yale so it shouldn’t cost us much (I hope) D1 is graduating in May and has secured an internship at a department of school she is graduating from, so is looking for an apartment to sublet for the summer, everything in Cambridge is over 1000 dollars for the month, she gets a stipend but will have to supplement with working at a restaurant or bar. She wants to go to grad school next year and the year after she graduates will be a hodgepodge of internships and little jobs. Will be a real eye opener for her that is for sure. If anyone knows of any sublets in Boston/Cambridge area this summer or rooms to rent, let me know!

Fogfog, Marathon is Monday 16th of April, will drive up on the 13th and come back on 17th. Should be fun! Hubby is obsessed, runs a few marathons a year but its what he loves, I’d rather stick needles in my eyes! LOL
Yalemom15, with my winnings, we could split a cup of coffee, lol!

EAO, my hubby runs marathons, also. Agree with you on pins in eyes.

Congrats on his getting into Boston!!! DH has missed the cut off time for his age group by a smidgen. He’s been luckier getting into NYC with the lottery.

He just started training for a run in the fall (not sure where yet) but tripped over a root on during a trail run on Sunday and has a small fracture in his big toe so can’t do anything for at least two weeks or so.

You would have thought he had his leg amputated with nothing but a whiskey soaked rag in his mouth they way he has been carrying on. I’m exhausted. Thankfully, he went into the office today.

EB–sounds like my DH–he’s not a good patient.

I’m impressed about the marathon runners. I’m trying to get back to running after a foot fracture (and unfortunately some weight gain
) and it feels like I’ve never run before. I’m not a distance person–10K would be my max, but right now I’d be happy with 2k!

DS still doesn’t have a room for next year. There was some sort of issue with the software for his res college room draw, so he says it may be a week or two before they get it fixed.

For anyone who’s had kids do summer classes abroad, do you know how the schools usually bill them? Is it all at once, or do they do a deposit first? Just got a bill for DS’s summer program and it’s for 10% of the total cost. Not sure if it is for a deposit or was an error when entered??? DS is supposed to look into it, but that could take awhile!
