Parents of the HS Class of 2012 - New beginnings

hsmom2dancers - how exciting for you and your son!

I wasn’t going to share this but since seiclan started - my daughter called last night - her roommates sister died. Now they don’t really like each other, have nothing in common, etc. but daughter hung around to see if she wanted her there but when she got nothing she decided that maybe this girl wanted some alone time so daughter went to the last orientation activity. Daughter was very concerned that she didn’t do the right thing but I tried to assure her that she did. I sent her to her RA but she wasn’t in her room - she was with the roommate. Finally the aunt came to bring the roommate home and daughter was hysterical. Selfishly, I’m concerned because today is the first day of classes and my daughter is up at midnight crying for this girl and, of course, is now homesick. She has an 8AM class so I’m asking her about her day before this news, trying to calm her down enough so she can go to sleep. I think that worked.

I feel awful for her roommate, I assume she’ll be gone for most if not all of this week which is also unfortunate for a freshman to miss her first week of classes. I am also assuming she’ll be back, which will be a bit awkward for my daughter. I do feel for this girl but I also need to worry about my daughter which may seem heartless but…

What if she doesn’t come back? I have no idea as to the circumstances of the death, don’t know if it was something somewhat expected (cancer or something) or if it was sudden (hit by a car). Don’t know if it was an older sister or younger, really I know nothing. I don’t think the school is oversubscribed and has kids in triples, my daughter doesn’t want a single. I’ll have to wait until I hear from my daughter later today. Just when things were going so well.

Oh amtc, I am so, so very sorry. :frowning: :frowning: What an awful situation all the way around. Please let us know how your D is doing. Is it possible for her to talk with the RA so she can have a fuller understanding of the situation? It might help her feel more connected to the situation and maybe help her process it better. What a sad thing to happen…

seiclan, I am very sorry for your son’s roommate, too. :frowning: How awful that this happened.

Oh dear, it seems that many prayers are needed this morning…

And on a much lighter note, S just called to wish me a happy birthday (50th today). That was sweet! Said he’s doing very well and actually getting decent sleep. That was a great present!

Wow, thank heavens for a lighter note-- those are two terrible stories. My heart goes out to these kids. Seiclan and amtc–my heart goes out to your kids too. It’s hard enough just to get on one’s feet at college, and find yourself living with someone you don’t know at all, without dealing with the repercussions of an awful tragedy.

Amtc - my condolences. Losing a loved one is tough under any circumstances but when one is already in a new and stressful situation, as all our new freshman, it can be overwhelming.

Boysx3- idk if the RA was made aware or not. I am not sure if I should ask DS, he doesn’t communicate often and doesn’t love when I get involved but I will def. be asking when he does reach out.

Sbjdorlo - happy 50th!!! Welcome to the 50 and older crowd!

Gwen - thanks, my thoughts exactly!

My father died during my freshman year and the girls in my hall sent flowers to my house. Decades later it still means a lot to me that they did that.

seiclan and amtc, sorry for the tragedies touching both your kids. I hope that things settle down and that the RAs do help in these times.

sbjdorlo- happy birthday!!

D has two weeks of classes under her belt, I am so happy she has many smaller assignments than in my day were there was a final and one or two prelims. I can’t believe the kids at D1’s school don’t arrive for several more weeks, classes don’t start until Oct 1!

I’m very sorry to hear about the tragedies being dealt with… so sad. Amtc… I guess I’d just take it a day at a time and see what develops about the future rather than trying to sort it out immediately. There’s probably really no way to anticipate what the roommate will do, but sounds like your daughter is good at coping.

hsmom2dncrs - I could really relate to your post and YAY for swing dance. My D has plunged into activities at her school too. She’s hoping to get onto the ballroom team, so she signed up for a ballroom PE class and is looking forward to a Salsa party on friday and then auditions the next week. She also auditioned for the regular (i.e. ballet, contemporary, hip hop etc.) annual dance show last week and was very excited that it went well. One choreographer already contacted her to be in a piece. She’s taking a 1/2 credit ballet class too. Her biggest excitement though was that last Saturday she found out there is a weekly underground Blues dance and she found it. (Blues dancing is a form of swing which she absolutely loves). She chatted on FB with me about it when she got home. Apparently the dancers at her school are really good, too. So she has found her Saturday night activity. They post the location weekly on a FB group. I’m so happy that dance is providing the perfect way for her to socialize. I highly recommend swing dance to anyone’s kids… It seems to be present on a lot of campuses and a great way to meet other people. There are almost always lessons before the dances.

She’s enjoying classes too for the most part - her Japanese is too easy, but can’t be helped. She did decide to wait on applying for a job doing technical theater because she didn’t want to risk being really overloaded if it was highly involving… maybe look for a work study job where she can do more studying.

After an overwhelming first week of classes, DD is settling in nicely. The small campus (500 students) really is a great fit and she has some opportunities she wouldn’t have at a larger school. She is on the cheerleading team and involved with a community service club.

She also informed me that she and a few peers who live in a campus apartment have started a business cooking and delivering grilled cheese sandwiches after midnight on weekends, since the last food outlet closes at midnight. They sold 10 the first night!

I wonder how long before they get caught. I’m sure there must be some rule against this but there are so many worse things they could be doing wrong, right?

glopop11 – It’s almost certainly against health department regulations. However, that’ll depend on the local health department to catch her.

Hi all, I finally decided to stop lurking and post. Believe it or not, I have read all the posts. I am so sorry for the kids going through all these traumas right now. I really enjoyed the drama of the next door neighbor’s son RM mom and the odyssey (or should that be ODDyssy) of the traveling suitcase.
My firstborn started a Freshman Summer Start Program at UC Santa Barbara on August 2 (the same day this thread started, new school for the list, BTW). I got back from getting him settled in on August 6 and this thread already looked too long to chime in, definitely my mistake. He finishes the summer session this Friday and flies “home” on Saturday. We moved from California to Texas in July, so he has never seen our new house. I feel horribly guilty to move states right when he was starting college, but it was necessary for our family. We also had him do FSSP to ensure that he kept in-state tuition.
His settling in at the dorm in early August went OK. I had not seen him for a month and I was very eager to spend time–him not so much. In fact other than one trip to BB&B he pretty much ignored me during the orientation, I had to sit with the parents and was shooed off to my hotel by 7 or so each evening. It was hard not to have my feelings hurt when he took me to the airport (five minutes from UCSB) FOUR HOURS before my flight because that was the only time he could fit the drive in.
Our family has SKYPED with him a few times and he answers e-mails within a few days, but only calls if there is a crisis. One involved a parking permit and I resolved that. The second happened last Friday, he called and told me “not to worry, but he had fallen off his skateboard and he thought his elbow was dislocated.” Health Center does not take our insurance, but I told him to go there anyway and we would seek reimbursement, which he was going to do anyway. His elbow is getting better, but I thought it was cute that he didn’t want me to worry–how was I going to know he had taken a tumble? I am a reforming helicopter mom, but not psychic! I do see his posts on FB and very rarely post there, so he has very little idea how much his regular updates keep me informed. He never comes here, so I think I am safe.
He will be here for a week and then start Fall semester in late September. I am SO looking forward to spending time with him. He has friends here from when we lived in Texas when he was in grade school (thank you, Facebook) so he will have a few people to pal around with. My luck will be that he spends all his time with them. It will still be good to have him around. He has already requested his favorite meal, I will be sure to have it ready!
Good luck to everyone who still has a launch to go, my advice is to have a thick skin, hopefully you won’t need it.

S mentioned to me that a student in his dorm attempted suicide the first week of school (it was in the first few days and S had not met him). This must be an EXTREMELY stressful time for some kids :(

Grilled cheese: yes, it is illegal to sell them. How to get around it? Ask for a suggested donation of $x. Out of luck if people don’t donate. Generally you need a restaurant grade kitchen and a food license for anything that can’t be stored/served at room temp. They could possibly load up on prepackaged snacks and sell them–convenience factor.

D started classes today and called to say they were fabulous! Loved chem and calc, heading to the library to work on some reading for her writing seminar. 2 minute conversation and had to go.

Another thing that I hope is happening with the grilled cheese is that they are delivered buddy-style. The idea of pretty girls delivering food to (potentially) drunk people on weekends could be less than ideal.

Someone here started a topic on doing new things for ourselves to help acclimate to our newly empty nests or emptier nests. Well, I did one - I signed up for a comedy improve class! Had the first one tonight and loved it. Yay.

Sorry to hear of the sad news coming close to our kids. There’s nothing much sadder than someone so sad and alone that they turn to that. What a thing for your kids to be dealing with. May peace and healing come to those left behind.

Happy birthday sbjdorlo!

Pinot, that sounds like a blast!

So DS lost his debit card and they wouldn’t send to his new address, so another care package will be on the way. I am tempted to send him 5-hour energy because I know via texts to gf that he is up at all hours with pledging duties. He seems happy though.

PN - I am so proud of you!!! Improv is very important in my house for my kids, even my incredibly shy daughter is amazing at improv and can’t wait to do it in college. It keeps you thinking and on your toes (always a good thing!) but I just can’t do it. Enjoy it and let us know if you have a show, maybe some of us can show up and cheer!

Those kids going to NU, I feel for you! My daughter will be a Senior and can’t believe she’s still at home. This year they are starting later than ever so you have the first week of January off instead of most of December and going back on Jan. 2, at least that’s what we’re thinking is the reason. She’s actually going back the day before Wildcat Welcome and, honestly, I can’t wait. I love her but this is too much! I’m guessing the others who launch towards the end are growing impatient as well. Good luck to you all.

amtc, my S is a junior at NU and I feel the same way as you. It seems like he’s been home forever! He is anxious to get back and will leave probably next weekend or so, but way before the start of school. (Oh, and he doesn’t have any Thursday or Friday classes, so technically won’t have his first class till Monday, October 1st!)

Thanks for the birthday wishes! Today was a rough day with S, 2015, but I have much to be thankful for as I head over the hill. :-)
