Parents of the HS Class of 2012 - New beginnings

Quack … I won’t tell.

Not me! Eighteen-ish years ago I turned in the final draft of my PhD thesis at 4:45pm (just beating the 5pm on last-day-of-term deadline) and went into labor that night. So I went straight from no-life-because-of-grad-school to parenthood. :p

mihcal1 … Wow, so you get to do a total reset of your next phase of life! Keep us posted.

When did the MIT kids launch? I don’t see them on the list.

Parents weekend is first weekend in November for S’s school. We are in Texas and he is in Santa Barbara, no non-stops so a pain of a plane flight (darn it!). My H is planning on going while I stay here with our younger kids. Is Parents’ Weekend such a big deal I should go, too? I was able to go get him settled, so I have seen his dorm room and met the kids on the floor. It would honestly be a hassle to go because our youngest is a preschooler (we would leave her here with family), but I don’t want S to feel like odd man out because he only has one parent there. Thanks!

seiclan,

MIT launched on 8/26 with orientation and school started exactly a week ago. :-)

WordWorld,

I think it depends on the family, truly. I dropped my son off across the country (from So. Cal to Boston) for oreintation for two days but no one will ever go to family weekend. We can’t afford it. Also, frankly, my dh will probably never set foot on the MIT campus; he just has no interest. :frowning: So, it will probably be me traveling solo anytime I go out for a visit (which probably won’t be very often). We have two other children but middle son doesn’t want to fly and youngest gets sick with travel! Saves us money, I guess. :-)

UCSB was a school of interest for my son because of the great physics offerings in their CSS program.

I hope your son has a great time in a beautiful city!

Wordworld - I said do whatever makes sense for your family! Sounds like your H and S will have a great weekend, and you can go the next time. There’s no “should” about it, unless your S feels really strongly about you coming. :)

Wordworld - your son certainly shouldn’t feel like “odd man out” with only one parent - so many kids only HAVE on parent nowadays! You went to get him settled and now it’s your husbands turn. No parent might make him a bit unhappy but his dad only? Not a problem at all. Don’t remember which school he is at or his major but I will say that sometimes these kids are so busy that you hardly even see them over Parents Weekend. I’d much rather go on move-in day than Parents Weekend. Relax, it will all be fabulous!

Wordworld, we did something similar my D’s freshman year.

I took her on her initial college visit to her school and had a lovely time exploring the area. H went to the first parent’s weekend her freshman year and enjoyed his visit too. We weren’t around for parent’s weekend the last two years, choosing to visit at other times and that was fine too.

Wordworld - my H actually went to parents weekend for our older D 2 years ago as he had not visited the school since I took her for move in. We are in SoCal she is in NYC. This year younger D is also at school in NYC and neither of us is going for parents weekend which is the first weekend in November. We had already booked tickets to leave on Thanksgiving day and spend a week in NYC with the girls.

I told D2 if she doesn’t want to be around campus that weekend with all the parents she can go stay at her sister’s apartment. I may see if my Aunt and Uncle who are in CT would be interested in standing in for us if D2 is really feeling like she needs someone there. Neither of us have gone again to D1’s school for parents weekend after her first year. I think you should do whatever is best for your family.

WordWorld- I am sure at UCSB many students will not have any parent there for the weekend. I think at large state schools it is less of an event.
We never went to parents weekend for my older 2 kids. One went to a huge OOS public and the other to a small Ca private. My private student lives in his own little world and never even realized that the parent event was going on. In my older D’s case the school was 2 plane flights away and based heavily on sports which was not her thing. We don’t have any plans to visit D at Davis. I know a couple of aunts are planning on visits and meals out. If anything in our case my D would prefer we spend the money for her to come home for a weekend horse show.

Update time…

Well, remember General Mom and family were going to visit for the weekend, and neighborboy was having his cousin visit the same weekend?

Apparently there were some fireworks.

General Mom lost it when she walked in the room and found neighborboy and his cousin playing video games on Friday afternoon, and cousin’s air mattress set up on the floor. According to what I was told, she had expected that her email to neighborboy that they were coming down that weekend meant that he should go home! and vacate his bed! And he had not checked with them about cousin coming! and she did not want her son to be subjected to guests in the room!

Anyway, neighborboy had simply taken the email as informational in nature…that they would be coming down to visit. And he had asked roomie if he minded cousin coming the same weekend–and he had not indicated any objection. Apparently roomie did not inform his mom.

RA overheard the commotion and popped in to see what was going on…

Ascertained that neighborboy had, indeed, checked with roomie.
Ascertained that General Mom had informed neighborboy .
RA didn’t see a problem as it would be crowded in the room but the residents of the room weren’t having a problem. if roomie’s little brother needed a sleeping bag or air mattress, she was sure there were some available to be borrowed on the floor…

RA tried to talk to General Mom who was having none of it…

RA and neighborboy tried to explain to her that he was not leaving campus on weekends, that he wanted to be there on weekends, and that he was involved in things on weekends (intramural sports and an improv team), and that he would be sleeping in his own bed.

Things did not go well. Although they obtained another air mattress for the brother, neither he nor roomie slept in the room that weekend–apparently slept at the hotel with the mom. The dad did not come down.

Neighborboy has tried to talk to his roomie, but the kid basically never says two words to anyone…passive to an extreme. Never told his mom about neighborboy not planning to go home for the weekend, never told his mom cousin was coming…

The two boys seem to get along ok, they grab dinner together a couple of times a week. They are both in the honors program but different majors. They don’t seem to talk much…but that’s boys anyway…and this kid seems almost silent.

Anyway, the RA is now totally aware of the crazy General Mom. My neighbor just sent General Mom an email telling her to have no more contact with her son…she is not to email him or call him, and that if she should visit, she is not to raise her voice to him or be anything other than civil. Neighborboy has been told to let RA know if there is any further cccrappp from General Mom.

I feel so sorry for the roomie…he must feel caught between a roomie that i think he would like if he were allowed to, and his mom…and the kid just seems terrified of his mom.

Jiminy. But good for your neighbor!! She’s standing up to General Mom and standing up for her son! Hurrah! That mom is, as we say, a piece 'o work.

boysx3 – It’s great that the RA got involved constructively. I feel sorry for roomie’s son. Silence and apathy might be his best option for coping. It sounds like neighborboy isn’t allowing the situation to adversely affect him. Good for him!

WordWorld – we’re skipping parents’ weekend, too. It coincides with homecoming and the campus and surrounding town are going to be a zoo. Hotel costs are at least quadruple, and I don’t even want to think about parking! If D wants someone to come, I’ll ask my brother to stand-in, since he can make it a day-trip by public transit. But I expect D will be too busy to care.

Thank you to everyone who responded re: Parents Weekend, I feel much better about not going. I don’t think S will care, in fact he will probably enjoy his alone time with Dad. I was just worried he would feel left out (helicopter blades whirling)
And Boysx3, I thought “OH GOODIE !!!” when I saw you had updated. Persecuted neighbor boy/pushy RM General mom is one of my favorite stories here. Every time I read posts about pushy mom I am grateful S lucked into a single, he is not one for confrontation. I am though, it would not have been pretty if I was your neighbor (although I’d appreciate being your neighbor, you’re a keeper!).

Yay nieghbormom!! And ya RA and neighborboy :)

Cheers for neighborboy, RA and neighbormom!

Wow, General Mom is completely out of control. Poor roomie!

Add me to those who loved reading the update and still goes, “wow,” when reading about General Mom. It’s difficult for me to comprehend parents expecting that much at a college level - to expect a roommate to GO HOME for a weekend so they can use HIS bed is very extreme even for control freaks.

I feel extremely sorry for roomie and dad (it’s no secret why he didn’t want to come).

I’m also very glad both neighborboy, RA, and neighbormom are taking on General Mom. Someone needs to. It probably hasn’t happpened in her life in a long, long time - if ever. She either had parents like herself or controlled her own family when she was still in diapers methinks.

I’m glad my guy likes his new roomie (after his “chosen” roomie died over the summer) and they get along great. I’m VERY thankful.

We’re still debating Parent’s Weekend here. I’d have to take time off school… We never went to oldest son’s Parent’s Weekends, but he’s twice as far from home (12 hours vs 6).

Wow, on General Mom. That’s hard to top.
