<p>Ok, I’ve got to admit that after my exchange here with emilybee I went away completely confused. There are legitimate reasons to cross Whitman off your list: not near a major transportation hub; not urban enough; student body TOO peppy and enthusiastic, … but the “creepy Stepford Wives” description was just antithetical to everything I know and love about Whitman.</p>
<p>While I was in the shower I was mulling it over and a very interesting thought occurred to me, people in general are pretty unaware of LACs and certainly the western ones are less known to the east coast and visa versa. Could this Californian mom have actually said Whittier College? A beautiful campus in California overlooking the Pacific Ocean that has a very religious outlook and is fairly well known for it’s set curriculum and views? It’s a fine institution but attracts a fairly narrow group of students. I’m just throwing that out there, and now I’m going back to where I belong. </p>

<p>I also hold a special spot in my heart for Carleton and it is still possible that S will choose that direction. With his interests in science and math, I think he is excited by some of the possibilities at a somewhat larger school, however an LAC has its own advantages. We’ll see what he thinks after an overnight at Carleton.</p>
<p>FWIW, Northernwoods, I have a good friend who went to Carleton and ended going to med school at one of the tippy-top schools in the country - so it doesn’t rule out science/math. He LOVED the school. After a couple of visits to others, DS decided small-town LACs weren’t for him.</p>
<p>I was thinking the same thoughts bopambo:) My D attends Whitman and I would never in a million years think of Stepford Wives. The campus is beautiful but it is known for its tough curriculm and most of the kids are very outdoorsy. Is that even a word? I know not all of the kids love the outdoors but so many choose Whitman due to its outdoor program. If I had to make a comparison I would say it would more like Lewis and Clark or perhaps even Reed. The kids walk around in shorts and barefoot in the late Spring and early Fall. Jump ahead to winter and the kids are dressed in sweats and jeans. I would characterize the students as more comfortable in their skin and not pretentious at all:) When the weather is nice I have seen the kids playing Frisbee or tossing the football around on Ankeny Field. Whitman is not preppy at all!</p>
<p>Back from my 8 day vacation and college tour (yes I’m starting all over again with that!)</p>
<p>So happy to see all the new decisions! What was so funny to me was that the very thing my younger d loved would have sent my s screaming. It’s interesting to see different schools through a different childs eyes. </p>
<p>So I see “my” school has 3 officials, and maybe one hold out…cough pghmom. UR may be the admissions “winner” of this cycle with the most attendees out of the group!</p>
<p>Or maybe Whitworth college in Spokane? Also Christian in orientation. I think you’re on to something. (Whitworth is also a lovely school… but very different from Whitman)</p>
<p>D is among those headed to Carleton this weekend for their admitted students days. She’s going to miss Thursday, but will be there all of Friday and leave Saturday morning. She loved her visit there last fall and I’m sure she’ll have a blast.</p>
<p>She just got back from an overnight at Olin, and, as of now, it looks like that school is going to be tough to dislodge from the number 1 slot in her heart. Such a unique and cool place. She’s still a little worried about the size (only 350 students (!), for those unfamiliar with the school), but she felt very at home there and is totally sold on the innovative curriculum and overall educational experience, which, of course, is supposed to be the main reason one goes to college!</p>
<p>Two more visits over the next 10 days (Carleton and Princeton), and hopefully she’ll be zeroing in on a decision.</p>

<p>I am wondering if the Marciemi family made it to Disneyland. Where I am the day started off with a downpour and then cleared but then was threatening. I’m wondering what it was like in Anaheim. </p>
<p>Does anyone know about NMS notifications of scholarships? I heard one person in our school got a corporate one and our college counselor said she hasn’t heard of any of the non-corporate ones going out yet. I checked on the forum and some have received but they are in other states. I wonder if it varies by state.</p>
<p>On the f. aid section of CC, I am seeing people getting notification of the $2500 award. I have a friend who’s son received the award. I would imagine, if it’s similar to the notification of corporate awards, it will take time for everyone to hear.</p>
<p>Thanks SJB. Haven’t heard of any yet in our area. Fingers crossed, every penny helps. DS is being very good about applying for outside scholarships.</p>
<p>My son was awarded the one time $2,500 NM scholarship from the National Merit Corp. last week. We are in Arizona. S will be attending University of So. California.</p>
<p>Hope all the kids going to Carleton accepted days have a great time and also those going to other schools soon such as Macalester, I think I recall. rayrick - Olin really does sound amazing. I look forward to hearing what she ultimately decides.</p>
