Parents of the HS Class of 2012 - Original

Well, in Broward County Florida we have only six more full days of school followed by 4 days of Final exams. Can you tell that I am looking forward to this school year being finished??

Looking at the demographics of the US doesn’t predict how many international applicants there may be in any particular year. This impacts some schools more than others, which can be determined by looking at their enrollment figures for same. Suffice it to say that this factor is one that’s been of increased importance over the past decade or so (setting aside the down period after 9-11.) It’s an important factor at many of the tippy top schools.

Anyone else looking forward to the end of the year?

Today is my son’s last regular school day. Next week he has exams all week (M-TH) until 11:30 am each day. Thursday is the last day. We are in count down mode here.

I can’t wait for summer…and school doesn’t get out until June 18th! Next two weeks are full days, the last week is minimum days.

Ugh! My kids have 13 more days of school left. Mentally, I think I was finished with this school year a week ago. :)

Our kids here are out on June 15th. My DD who is a junior is done with everything as she had APs and college calculus. She has no finals and just is working on mock trials for APUSH.

DD who is a freshman seems to have a bunch of projects to finish up next week before finals even start. She is ready for summer!

finals start on Thurs. D has 5 finals. Luckily they eased them into finals in middle school so they would be better prepared. The year has gone pretty well so far after a rough grade 1st trimester in History.

She is also taking Bio SAT II next Sat.

June 8,9,10 for the finals and that’s it. Our school district changed the schedule this year, school will start again on Aug 10, it will be a short summer.

Our last day was May 26. We go back August 13. :-)

My daughter has finals thru Thursday.

What is everybody’s 2012 high school graduate doing this summer? My daughter is taking a college calculus class for dual enrollment credit. She is also planning to take scuba lessons to get open water dive accredidation.

D is taking a biology class and an art class at the local CC, and yoga somewhere with her mom. I hope at least one of these things is relaxing for her.

Mine’s done, but it doesn’t feel like it, because this is the week in between school and the SAT subject tests.

Dog sitting, three vacations, training for cross county. No schoolwork/classes.

Son is working at a not for profit preschool camp for service hours (everyday, 9 -3). We will take a family beach vacation for two weeks in July. He also has to read two summer reading books for next year’s gifted sophomore English (Farenheit 457 and The Wizard of Earthsea) and he has to read and outline the first three chapters of his AP World book. He will also play way to many hours of Halo Wars or Call of Duty on his XBox live.

How about a school or personal reading list? The reason I ask is that seiclan mentioned this . . .

. . . and as school has become busier over the years, it has crowded out D’s reading time. She used to make up for it by reading during the summer, but now her summer is becoming busier. Her school has a pretty good summer reading assignment, and we augment it with books we’d like her to read, but at some point it’s all just more work.

Something tells me dog sitting, three vacations, training for cross country is the way to go.

Three vacations sounds good to me. :)

drivers ed, working, journalism camp, vacation. relax also summer reading. No advanced classes here.

I’m so glad I found this board!! My DD is in the class of 2012, has always been very driven and done well in school. She’s already thinking of college, she insists she wants to go to the “University of Someplace Warm” . She’s had enough of our Washington rain :)

2 weeks summer vacation in China, 2 weeks volunteer work, 1 week band camp, rest 3 weeks: driving ed, summer reading and hang out with her friends.

question, not about the kids, from me. How do you do the Quote message in reply?

Our schools don’t assign summer reading.

Now, for personal reading, I’m sure there is a list. I just don’t keep tabs on it. I suppose I could if I wanted to go look at D’s excel spreadsheet. That’s where she keeps track of what she’s reading now, each series she’s reading, what’s next to be released, cost, number of pages and estimated time needed to read it. She also rates each book and, when she thinks of it, posts her comments to Barnes & Noble.com.
