Parents of the HS Class of 2013 - 3.0 to 3.3 GPA

@HeavyLidded, my daughter is considering some of the colleges on your list of schools that your D was accepted into last year. Did you visit most of those campuses? Would love some feedback on a couple of them. Thanks!

Kat2013- I live in the Capital Region and D was accepted at Siena in her year. There are a lot of nice things about the school. Because of the basketball, it has a little of sports/rah rah feel, but not overwhelmingly so. It is a soft landing for a student that might need a little support re missing too many classes that first year. Not too big so as to be overwhelming but not so little that you don’t have privacy. It was a little too “white bread” for my D- she wanted something a little more free. But we both agree she could have been perfectly happy there. One nice thing- parts of Albany are rundown, but Siena is not that area. A lot of nice suburban entertainment options for students and bus runs to get them there/back. PM if there is anything else you want to know.

HL… glad to hear about your trip… sounds like it was a successful one. DS and I are headed to OH next week. First stop Wooster. I can’t seem to get a handle on what the student body vibe is. What’s your take on it? My DS is sort of an edgy, artsy type, but is a super extrovert, and likes tons of things to do at all times. Do you think he will find his peeps there. The reason I ask is because it is spring break for Wooster when we will visit…DARN!!

5boys - I was at Wooster with DS a week ago also. Your son sounds perfect for COW - that’s exactly the type of student we encountered. We were there for Scot Day, which started with a brief info session, then we split into tour groups. Each building we entered had two more students who led us on a tour of that building, so we met several students that way. Then they had a lunch for us, where different students would come to our table to eat and chat. I found the students very engaging, some were artsy types, some were edgy, a couple were preppy, but they were all smart and outgoing. I loved the school, DS was more concerned that it seemed so out of the way. But if he is fortunate enough to get in, he will have to seriously consider it.

Bookmarking and congrats everyone!

After several weeks of paddling around the doldrums, it was kind of fun to wake up to discover that DS’s deferral to University of Denver has turned into an acceptance. I doubt he’ll get any merit aid and that was the one school that required all of the IDOC stuff that we decided not to send, so there will likely be no $$ there. Still–yeses always feel good (just as no’s always feel bad). So hooray?

Yes Hooray!!! :)

Definitely hooray!

MyLB - definitely hooray! And it’s never too late to ask if it’s too late.

Yes, hooray!

Feels like nothing has happened here in awhile, too. Still waiting on RIT and UMass Amherst. Also, no FA info yet from anywhere. Will be happy when this process is completed (of course then we have to start paying!)

Definitely Hooray MyLB - Congrats to your S!

DD just found out that she was accepted to the Honors Program at Guilford, which comes with an extra 2K/per year on top of her merit aid. Unfortunately the FA package only gave loans and work study, no grants, so we’ll see…

FA packages trickling in here but no big surprises included. (Does anybody ever get good news from them? )

Thanks pkd! That is good to hear. I am a little interested to see what my DS thinks about the really rural schools, as he is also considering BU and NYU… theater kid. His GPA is above this thread, but I am a big fan of the CTCL schools, and we also need merit, so like to hear about al of visits. COW is on DS’s list because of their theater program and also their independent thinking and learn while doing ideals. He is a VERY out of the box thinker that I feel needs to be nurtured in college by the right school. We are also going to visit Kenyon and Oberlin…I wish we had time to see OWU… maybe though??

Getting worried about my DS this semester. He is having a really tough time with his classes. We have block scheduling so the kids have 4 classes a semester for 1 1/2 hrs each block during the day. He has Honors Sr English, Honors Chem. II, Calculus and a virtual high school course. We are about 1/2 way through the 3rd term so he still has time to turn it around. It is just so hard to see him try and still struggling. As a mom I just wish there was more I could do to help out. My biggest fear is offers of admissions being rescinded.

Just need to vent.

ConfusedMom - I wouldn’t worry too much. My son had a D and a few Cs on his midyear and so far, he hasn’t had any acceptances or scholarships rescinded.

Thanks. he did do well with 1st semester courses but so far he has a 64 in Calculus, he got a 69 on his last English test and he is struggling in Chemistry. He has an A in his virtual high school course. Just hoping he can pull things up to B/C grades.

Better this year than next! At least in retrospect.

Congrats on all the acceptances! Confused - I feel your pain. DS thinks he has graduated already and there is still two months to go. His new mantra is ‘c’ for degree. Ugh.

For the parents of juniors, here is the final stats for my son. There is hope, I swear! I’ve spent the last 12 years organizing, coaching, yelling, and encouraging this bright kid who refuses to live up to his potential. He is a typical ADHD kid who makes me laugh and infuriates me at the same time.

GPA: 3.1 UW 4.9 W
SAT: 1300 (m&cw)
10 AP’s
Four years in two sports
EC’s are practically non-existent bc of sports
104 community service hours (a whopping 4 more than required)

Accepted to:
Rollins, with merit
University of Tampa, with merit
University of S. FL
College of Charleston
University of South Carolina, Columbia
(SC schools are supposed to send merit notifications in march)
Hofstra, with merit
St. John’s, with merit

Deferred at Fordham - they wanted his 1st semester grades but he has already decided on another school.

Leacoop and Shrinkrap-Thanks. Hoping he can pull it together. Practice for next year!!

Thanks HL! I am really happy to hear that your D liked COW so much, as she seems very similar personality wise as my S. I am also VERY bummed there will be no students on campus, but this is also my S’s spring break and literally the only time we can visit. We live in CA, so EVERY school is a long plane ride…UGH! He is still undecided on whether he is going to audition for BFA programs or stick with a BA in theater. He probably will so some auditions and will decide after all decisions are in. That is why he is looking at bigger schools, that is where all of the top BFA’s are. Right now I have no idea how it will all play out, but he is very interested in Wooster… and I’m really glad your D thought it was an ok place for a social extrovert that likes to be busy constantly:))

What did your D think of the theater program??

pkd… do you have twins??
