How are you guys getting FA packages already? I’m getting nothing and Univ of Denver is one of my biggest concerns. Turned all my stuff in as early as possible, but it looks like her schools didn’t even download anything until March 1st.

Coralbrook,
I’ve been looking at the timetables most of our choices have on their websites, and the end of March, beginning of April seems to be when they send out financial aid for accepted applicants. (Early action or rolling admissions.) Regular decision goes out about the same time. Doesn’t give you too much time to analyse and plan visits if some of your choices are eliminated because of $$.

I looked back at when we heard about financial aid for my older D, now a junior. It was the last week in March in 2010. (Still using the same file box for organizing applications, acceptance materials, etc.)

It is VERY frustrating coral… last year my DS had to eliminate schools he was accepted to because he never got the FA results early enough for us to make a decision, let alone visit. University of Denver was one of them. I don’t think we ever even got anything from them before he sent in his No Thanks reply card. He was unfortunate to be accepted to a bunch of schools that he never visited. The schools that sent the merit and FA awards with acceptances we LOVED!!! It is so much easier to put everything out on the table and make a rational decision on what schools to make accepted student day plans.

University of Denver says on its web site: “Award letters are sent out every year in late-March for incoming students…”

My son applied to six colleges and was accepted to all of them, including four or five that were Early Action. He has not received Financial Aid information yet from any of them. Our initial FAFSA and CSS Profile online forms were submitted in January.

Agree on the FA packages-- we have received one so far-- Whittier-- and throughout the whole application process they have been on top of everything. It is the smallest school my S applied to, so maybe that is why

My older S also eliminated a school because it was mid April and we still had nothing. (U of Pacific). They kept saying it will be online within 2 days-- Lucky he preferred another option anyway so he didn’t feel too bad. He finally got something in the mail around April 20-- terrible FA package so it all worked out for the best

It is very difficult to make a $1,000 decision (estimate of our total cost to go to Univ of Denver) on whether to go somewhere for Accepted Student Day or not. Unfortunately they only seem to have one Accepted Student Day that would fall after FA/costs are determined - and that is not until April 22nd. That’s really cutting it close.

My daughter keeps begging to go for a visit and I have to keep saying No.

5boys, yes I have twins. DS fits this thread, DD is a high stats kid. Although he’s sitting pretty with 8 acceptances, including most with nice merit $, and she thankfully got an early write from one school a week ago, or she’d still not know if she’s going to college.

It is expensive to visit schools - our OH trip probably was close to $1000. Luckily I had Hilton points for hotels, but renting car and airfare were tough. I need to get DS to Denver and Baltimore (DU and Goucher) at minimum. DD just has a couple of schools to see, already visited the rest.

The only FA letter my son has received so far was from Ithaca. Penn State says they will announce awards mid-March. None of the other schools really say when they will start notification.

I’m more of a lurker than poster on this thread. I was just reading another thread and boy were the people being mean to each other. Some people just have to argue for the sake of arguing or can’t see another point other than their own. Just reminded me how kind, thoughtful, and supportive all the people on this thread have been. You all have really helped me through this past year - especially these last few weeks of anxiously waiting for the results and as we make those final decisions. Thank you to my imaginary friends - from one of the quiet ones.

I, too, am frustrated by the timing of the FA packages. We’ve received 2 so far ( Fairfield and Hobart), I hate to schedule any visits without knowing what our cost of attending will be. I was also hoping to use one to negotiate for more money from another if possible.

@bkbmom
I know what you mean-many posters are…well…snarky! This is a lovely, supportive thread and it has personally seen me through my S’s sophomore year to college acceptance! I love my CC friends. To me, they are very real. Thanks, everyone!

Chiming in with thanks for so much generous help, support and information here on this thread. Makes me wish I had some younger kids in the house!

Newbie question what comes in FA packages?

I agree bkbmom - this thread is always a lovely place to “visit” and the tone is always encouraging and helpful. I’d like to find like-minded parents when I start working on my son’s college search but he is a higher stats kid and the threads for those schools really turn me off. How will I do this? Call it the “Not-Crazy Parents of Class of 15/Selective Colleges” thread? LOL - I might really do this…

Joisymom-I’m with you on that new thread! My D15 is higher stats than my S13. Will be starting that search after he is settled in.

LOVE, LOVE it Joisymom… absolutely, so do it. CC really needs a thread like that. MY DS14 is a higher stat kid, but not super high, and I will just stay here. I think it is still relevant because my DS12 was fit this thread and I feel the most comfortable here. Also, my DS14 is not looking at super selective schools.

pkd… great about the twins! I thought I saw you over on the Macalester forum. DS14 has that school on his list.

Another thank-you to everyone from another quiet one here.

Posted some months ago when D was (rather unexpectedly) rejected from Wooster. Got lots of kind advice and support. Now going through a bit of a crisis with D’s senior year and trying not to panic that admissions offers will be withdrawn…not ready to post much on that topic but am reading here often and always encouraged with everyone’s stories of success, however we all define it.

Just submitted FA apps a week ago, so at least I now know not to expect anything soon – one thing less to worry about each day.

Mdnhmass - From what I understand, it is pretty rare for a college to withdraw admission (but ssshhhhh…let’s not tell the kids with senioritis this fact…) Hope it all works out and you get peace of mind soon.

I have twins… I wonder how we get through the day… One is lazy but got into some of the same colleges as his brother (3.3 GPA). Hopefully he won’t have to help him out there.
