Parents of the HS Class of 2013 - 3.0 to 3.3 GPA

I am sitting here with silent tears streaming down my face as I stare at the small little envelope from Chapman. I’m sure my D will take it better than I am when she comes home.

But, in the same mail today we got the big envelope from Cal Lutheran.

It will be a crazy night here at our house.

^^^^Coralbrook, I wrote to you on that other thread…so sorry, but CONGRATS to her on Cal Lutheran (and her merit $$$$ award will be in the 2nd paragraph of that letter, yay!)

Hugs all around!

So sorry coral-- I feel like crying just reading your post. Big envelope from Cal Lutheran is good though-- did you visit there? Do you still have other schools to hear from?

I loved your Denver letter! No FA info on their website for us as of Friday night. When DS gets home from golf (yes they have a golf tournament in the snow) I will have him check again. He got his FA package in the mail from Redlands-- I am trying to read through the envelope but can’t see anything.

Congrats Jane on additional merit $$$-- glad the Oregon visit went well

Coral… I totally know how you are feeling. I was in your situation last year… holding the very sad and thin envelope from DS’s #1 school. It was probably one of the saddest moments of my life. I wanted it SO much for him. You have kids and all you want for the rest of your life is for them to be happy. It is crushing as a parent to witness anything but that. I want you to know that, you are right, they take it better than we do. They are amazingly resilient. She will find her school, and she will thrive. My DS went on his accepted students days dejected thinking he was going to have to settle. He fell head over heals with one of those schools and will matriculate there in August after a the most amazing gap year. I am thinking of you and wishing you the best!!! It will all be over soon:)

Hugs to you, Coral. But, Cal Lutheran looks great!

Jeez, Coral-so sorry. Everything will be okay. You’ll see!
But, did you open the envelope? It might be a flyer for the laundry service…

D was admitted to Cal Lutheran with 11k per year merit scholarship, one of their highest! Unfortunately, she just put it aside and cried about #1 school rejection. I wish they had a stronger film program because the merit aid makes it doable for us.

We have only one more coming, American U in Washington DC, but I don’t think that is even under consideration by her at this point.

And yes, it was rejection from Chapman. Not even a waitlist.

Coral - So sorry for you. I’d recommend giving her a few days to wallow, then remind her Cal Luthern wants her so much that they are offering a top award to her.

I think for us, watching them go through the rejections is just the first step to truly letting go and realizing we can no longer protect them. Just be the soft landing and don’t let them get stuck in self-pity of what they can’t have.

^^^^heartbreaking situation. Coralbrook, please post again and let us know how she is doing, and how YOU are doing, too. But she’ll need to grieve first before she bounces back.

How do you add to the list??? My son also got UCSC… But might still go to ASU?

Got FA notification today from UoPacific. Unfortunately it was what we expected, but not what we were wishing for. Our EFC is around 11K and the grants/scholarships awarded still leave about 25K gap. Not affordable at all. Wondering if we should contact them to see if they might be willing to offer more.

Was one of D’s top choices, but we set expectations with her from day one that it was a long shot financially. Still a big disappointment for her

Still waiting also for decision from Sonoma State, which is very puzzling for us.

coralbrook so sorry to you and your dd. It is so hard to watch our kids be diasppointed.

My dd’s #1 school only gave her a few thousand in merit aid and she didn’t qualify for need based aid. I now get to deliver the news that her #1 choice is not financially possible, because the tuition increased spiked much higher than anticipated and the merit aid won’t cover the gap. :frowning: I know she’s going to be so disappointed, it makes my heart hurt.

Son’s Sonoma State acceptance took ages, though he did get it a week or two ago. I think it was slow because he applied to an impacted major (Bio: Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation). I actually expected him to miss the cut and get in to his second choice (Environmental Studies: Environmental Conservation and Restoration), which is impacted but less so (based on last year’s numbers). Riverside has been releasing decisions for over a month and he’s heard nothing, despite having solid numbers for that campus. We still have not heard boo from Cal Poly Pomona either. I guess what I’m saying is not to fret. Some campuses just seem to allow their decisions to trickle out slowly.

MOM1006-

My son is in to Santa Cruz as well. I still think Willamette is our number #1, assuming son likes it when he visits, and assuming we can make the money work (it is a big stretch). If either of those assumptions are wrong, we’ll be giving Santa Cruz a very serious look, along with Merced and Humboldt.

Thanks for going through the thread and compiling the list of acceptances, Octoberdana! Just adding Warren Wilson where my daughter will attend next fall (with merit!)

Coral, I’m sorry about Chapman :(. But Congrats on Cal Lutheran!

Coral, I hope today is a brighter day for both you and your D. My S2 has friends who currently attend Cal Luth and they are really happy there. I know how it feels when your kid gets the thin letter from the first choice school. That was me a year ago this month. But my S is now thriving at what was his second choice. And in hindsight, my H and I know that had S been accepted at his #1, the offer wouldn’t have come with the merit aid he got from #2. We really would have had to struggle financially to afford it. We are actually thankful now that the decision was made for us via the rejection.

Here’s what you do now. You make a poster chart – goofy, colorful and fun – listing all the schools that have accepted your D. You make columns for “pros” and “cons,” and you hang it up in a visible place at home. You focus on those schools, you jot comments on the chart, you plan visits to see them again. The point is to CELEBRATE the acceptance she has received. It worked for us. No looking backward! Good luck to your D!

LRP… LOVED your post!!

mamaduck, Is you son planning to attend RIT? Plan to visit with my junior son for Game Design…did you visit? May I ask how they are with aid/scholarship? Congrats on all these wonderful acceptances!!
