<p>A fine selection of videos today. I particularly like the Beasties with Elvis. Saw him a few years ago and he put on a 3 hour, non-stop show. Maybe better than the tour he made when I was in college with the spinning wheel. Anybody remember that?</p>

<p>Good afternoon cruisers! Congratulations to the Presidential Scholarship semi-finalists! Exciting! We have two drink specials today, a Chocolate Martini or a Lemon Drop. And of course a glass of wine for Kelowna!</p>
<p>We had a good time at the local Alumni reception for admitted students. I would say about a third of the attendees had already decided and two thirds were still deciding. Quite a few alumni were there, but the most popular was a guy that works on Game of Thrones. Everyone looked at him like he was a rock star. I think was in charge of “sound” or something. We heard “Go Bears” more times than I can count. Evidently that is the appropriate way to start and end almost all conversations. DS seemed to enjoy himself and is really looking forward to our trip up there next weekend.</p>
<p>Congrats to Kelowna and Greek on the Pres. Scholarship semis!! I think we have another to congratulate too…esteem?</p>

<p>Terrible scene in Boston today at Marathon finish line. Two massive explosions, many injured badly and they had to halt the marathon. Speculating about devices on sidewalk in trash cans being set off. If you have loved ones who ran or spectated you should check on them.</p>
<p>Sorry for the diversion from college talk but I know people are from all over on this thread and that this race attracts people worldwide.</p>
<p>So far I read that 23 people injured & 2 dead. Very scary. Praying for all the victims & their families.</p>

<p>My mom called a while ago and told me my cousin was running the marathon today. I had no idea. Some panicked moments for our family, but my dad got through to his sister and my cousin is home (in Wellesley) and fine. </p>
<p>Prayers for all who are still waiting for news, and for those who have news and it’s not as comforting as mine is. </p>
<p>Saw a credible news report that families of the Newtown shooting victims were seated in a VIP section near the finish line today. Unbelievable. Horrific</p>
<p>Yes laurendog, I was on the marathon route today in Boston but not near the finish line and all this. It is horrific. Just so terrible.</p>
<p>Last Wednesday DS was in a hotel half a mile down the street. He was walking around that exact area that evening. Now I don’t feel quite so embarrassed that I was paranoid being worried while he was away. Regardless, we won’t change anything that we do when these things happen. Just like Maggie Thatcher made sure she started the 9:30 am conference the morning after her hotel got hit decades ago. People who do these things trying to change society need to realize that it doesn’t work.</p>
<p>A lot of students run in that race with their friends cheering at the finish line. We at least can be thankful for the excellent medical talent in that city. So sad, and so needless.</p>

<p>If you and yours are safe, give thanks and direct your thoughts, good wishes, and prayers (if you’re the praying type) to those who aren’t. Our kids are growing up in a far less innocent age than we did, but I hope they can prevail over that and approach college and young adulthood with the same sense of idealism most of us did.</p>

<p>However, not all of us grew up in an innocent age. Family members tracked Hitler’s expansion into various countries, others were held captive by totalitarian dictators, and some risked their lives escaping those regimes. Actually, kids in our country don’t realize how bad life can become. Many kids younger than our Seniors barely remember 9/11, if at all. Personally, I’d rather our college kids become problem solvers, which sometimes requires pragmatism over idealism.</p>
