<p>I’ll stack a bunch of Dunkin Donuts in the front of the room to “give us energy.” {stuffing pastries into my keyboard to send to y’all now…} :D</p>
<p>So thankful for the excellent medical teams in Boston; sounds more promising that the critically wounded will survive. I hope many of our best and brightest are still thinking pre-med and medical research. It is a long road to get trained to do that kind of work.</p>

<p>YDS – I’ll respond here since the GW parents are pretty touchy on this one, but, at least by reputation, GEORGEtown is the “smart kids” school, GEORGE Washington is the “rich kids” school, and GEORGE Mason is the “commuter kids” school. Like all stereotypes, those descriptions are both partially true and somewhat out of date. (Mason, for example, has been on a dorm-building binge, and its student body gets better and better the harder it gets to get into UVA or William & Mary.) </p>
<p>I think GW has some of the same issues that folks raise about BU, NYU, and USC. It’s the urban school for slightly-less-than-top students, and it’s relatively glamorous location attracts conspicuously wealthy kids who want the social life in DC in addition to the academics. Now, nobody’s saying those kids are the majority – but as a minority, they really stand out on campus and in the surrounding neighborhood.</p>
<p>SomeOldGuy post 23663 - yes that would make you a bad person. However I have said my piece on that thread and I am not going back to it. I’m sure I could pull up lots of bad things about Duke if I go looking.</p>
<p>Not as many as I could. But no one wants to relitigate the Duke lacrosse scandal this morning.</p>
<p>We also could discuss the bomb threat at the Duke student union this morning. Or we could just debate whether jelly donuts might go better with Chardonnay than chocolate (which would seem to call for a bright, tannic red).</p>

<p>SomeOldGuy, people get “touchy” because of people carrying on stereotypes when they have no first hand knowledge.</p>
<p>My “Eurotrash” D at GW actually chose it over Northwestern and other great schools because she loved the whole city, political scene there. And she hasn’t regretted it one bit and actually has really down to earth friends as well.</p>
<p>But enough of that, I don’t want to let hard facts get in the way of your stereotypes.</p>
<p>Just saw an image of a plane in Boston with it’s luggage out on the run way due to a suspicious package… Reminded me of a trip to Ireland in the 80s while the ‘boys’ were still active. We were sitting on a plane and the captain explains we’re missing a passenger so everybody’s luggage is going out on the tarmac and you will all deplane and walk by and identity your luggage. (Thus identifying the icky by elimination) How’s that for real life hot potato? Thankfully we were spared that by the little old man who then came on board apologizing for his extended restroom stay. I may have 9 lives but that just about cost me one.</p>

<p>As the touchy parent of a GWU grad (Eurotrash girl?) who graduated Phi Beta Kappa although rejected by Georgetown and is currently very well employed, I am taking a long CC break.</p>
<p>Bigdoglover - GW sounds excellent - even from SomeOldGuy’s description. If I was 18 again I’d love it there I think. I rarely get to DC, but I love it so going to college there would just be heaven.</p>
<p>I’m admittedly touchy about it because my D is sooooo liberal, almost a hippee. Well it is from her I learned a good lesson. I cautioned her that maybe GW wasn’t right for her because of all the sterotypes as pointed out here. She said basically - I can handle it, kids who are only into material things etc are just not going to be people I spend time with. It is big enough that actually all kinds go there. She is President of a community service sorority that does great work and has great school participation. So its been great.</p>
<p>Anyway this isn’t a GW thread and my youngest D has basically decided so I think I will follow mamabear and exit CC.</p>
<p>Mamabear, congrats on Pomona. I know little about it but did have one friend who had a D attend and she loved it…sounds from them like it is a great place.</p>

<p>Funny thing about Pomona is I had never heard of your Pomona until CC. In California we just have one of the Cal-Poly campuses - Cal Poly Pomona which we call Cal Poly so when I heard Pomona on here I was confused. I intend to learn more about your Pomona, but it must be nice if your D is leaning that way.</p>
<p>Vent – Just when I thought we were settled & DS was getting excited about Bama, he tells me he is discussing a FA review at Pitzer. </p>
<p>I understand the So Cal draw. I loved the Claremonts. Yes, Pitzer’s low admit rate should make anyone accepted feel important BUT the FA is so far from what I can pay that there is no way it will work. So, while DS is still dreaming, I steep back into guilt mode. And we want even discuss my 13 yr old…I want to go to college and leave them all at home.</p>

<p>ETA: I loved Pomona, too. Would have been perfect for ds1, but he loves where he’s at, which has been perfect for him, too. It’s not the right place for ds2, but the FA offer was fantastic!!!</p>

This class of 2017 has so much more to weather… as some one mentioned many posts ago… dorms, roommates, and I don’t even know what else…but, we should stick together!
