Parents of the HS Class of 2013

Wow, GM, not only do your gang get into phenomenal schools with terrific packages, they even get into schools they didn’t apply to!

Other people should have such problems.

Oh Marybee! I have definitely moved on to the next phase of worrying. Almost immediately after the relief of the decision I started stressing about orientation, picking a dorm, move-in, etc… For orientation, they are 2 days and are only in the month of June. DS doesn’t even graduate until 6/21! Should he miss a day or 2 of school? (because after APs they don’t do anything anyway), but one session was the weekend of prom, another was when they will get the yearbooks, another graduation, etc… So we decided on the very last orientation (which is not ideal since they sign up for classes at orientation). Now I have moved onto stressing on whether or not I want to go to orientation. Normally I would want to, but this parent orientation involves rooming in the dorm, and since I would be going by myself I would be rooming with a STRANGER. Plus we just went up there last weekend, so do I want to go again so soon? (and pay the airfare), AND then again in August for move-in? Last night he submitted his housing after we went through the pros and cons of each of the options. I think next up for me is to stress about what he should take. Which is stupid because he doesn’t listen to me anyway. blah, blah, blah, blah…

confetti- Yes, we have one last deadline of May 5 for a scholarship application. I’m not there to facilitate the process, so my guess is there is no motivation whatsoever!!! DH can deal with this one!!

I leave for two days and DS somehow forgets to go tutor the kid whom he has been helping the exact same day and time for the last eight months!!! WTH???

Marybee333 - right there with you on the worrying front. The logistics seem daunting, but I know we’ll get through them. Maybe I’ll have to have a sip from that jug of moonshine being passed around to calm my nerves? It’s always cocktail hour somewhere, right?

Tx5, yDS, poiunce and marybee- I am right there with you! D has signed up for orientation which they recommend parents go to. I was just there last week like u Tx5 and we r gone for a month two days after. D is going solo. I think she prefers that. Figuring out dorm supplies now. First purchase, lots of cute undies on sale- what dos that say about my priorities? I got a raised eyebrow from DH.

Swizzle I am sooo happy for you! Keep us posted on everything!

Donivirian and Tx5- if u need info or anything Cal, we r in Bear country!

Haystack-LOL, since I am not a wine connoisseur, I an in for some of your Boone’s! Although I hear the grapes around the English dept at ISU are outstanding :)

Gosh this list is so fun to watch grow! I feel happy for all these kids! Hang in there undecideds!

“Cute undies”??? We mothers of sons would like you to return those for granny panties.

Cute, sturdy, boy briefs. nothing for me to worry about! I think it is a laundry thing. Got the laundry bag too… Thanks for the recommendation!

How about flannel long undies?

Congrats on Minnesota, MTnest! Go Gophers!

tx5 - yum! I’ll have a Champagne Cocktail. I can sip and zip (while serving on skates :D)

Hang in there, cari! Fingers crossed for a good visit next week. Zipping over to throw some pixie dust over your vodka…

Haystack - Iowa State is nothing to sneeze at!

Yay swizzle!

marybee333 - yes. yes, that is me. And not just me, I want S13 to enjoy the end of senior year. But it sure is hard to shut off the hamster wheel in my head! We mailed the card on Saturday and I can’t understand why they haven’t sent us anything yet. Seriously. The next thing is supposed be sent in early June and I’m already watching the mailbox (!!) Would you like a Mimosa?

SomeOldGuy - I didn’t know you could yo-yo. That works so well with your skates!

YDS - I’m there too, with band before official move-in. We’re technically close enough, maybe I’ll drive back for parent programming.

Greek - I agree with him to a point – a quick call or an email to the generic admissions address is enough. It’s not like it’s a one-to-one relationship with the waitlist.

Also, can you apply your pixie dust to housing assignments? Ours will be done by the school, the students don’t pick. At least no worry that he’ll do it badly.

Worried about the housing and move-in logistics here too. D will get the housing packet on-line in late June but she will be on the road with drum corps all summer. At least she will be somewhere in the US and has an iPhone. We did find out the Corps’ end of summer schedule so we made reservations to fly her directly from Indianapolis to Phoenix where we will meet her and have one very short day to move her in before band auditions begin that evening. We are almost done with acquiring all the things on her packing list. I have added several good suggestions from this thread. :D

Haystack – I’m already trying to convince my engineering-focused S15 that he should give Iowa State serious consideration.

Congratulations to all those who have moved on to scheduling orientation and shopping. Wheaties for all those who are still waiting for decisive thinking!

Can I interrupt to ask your advice for S15? I learned yesterday that he will be attending an international boarding school to finish high school (UWC AC, Wahoo!). I had planned for him to review math this summer to prepare for the PSAT but learned that the PSATNMSQT qualifying score for international students will be 221+. I’m trying to decide whether it is worth aiming for. His sophomore PSAT was 207 and he’s taken no math in China this year. He already has an ACT of 34. Do you think it is worth the time investment for him to study math if he has to hit such a high mark and might have a decent enough ACT for selective colleges anyway? He’ll be home for about two months before he leaves for Wales.

Apollo - I would say to try it. My son had a 207 soph year as well, and then improved to a 223. He didn’t study for it. It’s just sort of part of the growth process (I think!) The math? Doesn’t it only go through Algebra II? Can you find a practice test to have him take and see how he does? Maybe he won’t have to review much at all.

NerdyDad, I am convinced that Boston is now the safest city in the world. At least, I’m telling myself this.

Swizzle, CONGRATS!

Carimama, you’ve got style–vodka and cake…

SomeOldGuy: Woof! Your day has come to walk the dog. :)

Like other moms of sons, I would like to believe that none of the daughters have cute undies. Even if they’re boy-shorts style! Not that any of our sons will ever know anyway. Right? Right? (Pushing head deeper in sand…)

Apollo6, I’m inclined to think that studying for the PSAT is not worth his valuable time, but then again, maybe my3gr8boyz has a point. Whatever you decide, congrats on the 34! Awesome!

Greek, wow. This new story should be a CC headliner: “Son accepted to college where he didn’t apply!”

YDS, Marybee, Confetti, TX5, same situation for us–not quite sure of those start of year details. Seems like many of us on CC are “planners” and it’s awfully hard to wait. I guess we just need to be happy we’re not on the USS Indecision anymore.

Apollo - I agree on the practice test. You can decide based on the results.

As for e-mail addresses and info going to our kids - we used a specific e-mail for DS that connects to both my and my husband’s e-mails… pretty cool…

OK… my middle son’s real initials are DS and I keep wondering why I am writing about him on this thread when he is only a 14er!! Then it hits me - oh yeah! Duh! Then the next time I post it happens again! :D

East Grad: I’ve noticed that he is already “dad’s dog” when he wakes up at 0545. Funny how that works.

I feel like I missed class, am now behind, and need someone to let me copy their notes.

What is the right thing to do about roommates? I’ve passed on your advice about not rooming with friends but should they be finding friends on social media? Should they be just filling out the housing forms?

And how do you plan a dorm room when you don’t know the size of the room? How do you know what the options are? In other words, fridge? Closet space? Etc?
