Thanks for that SomeOldGuy. Your message is an example of why I finally stopped lurking in my dinghy and jumped aboard this ship. Well said.

I’m a long-time reader, but infrequent poster. However, I thought I’d be the first to post for Olin. I’m sending a second daughter there (Classes of 2015 and now 2017).

Warm blankets for me today and cup of soup! A virus hit my house brought in by my sweet kindergartener! My 4 month old has been miserable the last two days and up all night. I got a taste of it this AM, with chills and body aches. I had planned to hit the stores today and work on D13s party. I’m trying not to move from this spot on the couch with the baby unless absolutely necessary.

Stevema was it you that mentioned Drum corps? I’m a life long fan since my discovery of it in 1987. I marched Guard in High school. I had dreams of marching corps, as all our high school staff was also from several corps, Madison Scouts, Cavaliers, Santa Clara Vanguard and Phantom Regiment. Alas, as my daughter can say, I had no “cash monies” at the time. For those who have not seen DCI ,it is in my thinking, the nations best kept secret.

Apollo I also echo the others to try the test. All kids are different, but for my kid the best prep for those tests was taking the test itself in previous sittings, or taking practice tests. She ended up as a scholar and got money. That money can be used at any institution. It’s came in handy toward the student contribution.

I guess I need to add D to the list. Duke is cleaning up. My daughter has a friend that is going there. The girl was amazing, but the one thing that stuck out in my mind about her was how fantastic she was with adults. She came to my daughter’s B-day sleepover and offered to help me with dishes when they finished eating! I wanted to adopt her right then and there. lol

We haven’t pushed the button yet to make it official, so I will add to the list the moment that happens. She is sure about C O L U M B I A , so now I also join the rest of you on the worry about housing, orientation, travel, and what to take train.

WOW - I think it is interesting that out of all of our kids so far there are only three schools (Duke, WashU and U of Florida) that has more than one attending. Duke is winning so far!! That is a school that my dd had on her original list but never applied to in the end. All of these kids have an exciting 4 years ahead of them!!!

Okay, I’ll emerge from the murky, lurker-filled waters below ship for just one post.
Cuz I gotta represent for the women’s colleges!!!
D is headed to Mills!

His first choice major, as of now, is archaeology. Virtually no jobs in that field, and even fewer without a PhD. Because of that, we are asking him to choose a 2nd major.

Right now, he is looking at Forestry (in the College of Ag), Geology (geology also has fantastic placement rates throughout the US), and Econ. Econ is a hybrid program at ISU, it is part of the College of Ag and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Most of their Econ majors have an ag/natural resource focus and take classes in Ag markets and cooperatives, commodity trading, Ag trade policy, Ag based developmental economics, natural resource policy, etc.

Their Econ program is actually quite strong. They don’t turn out any I-Bankers, but produce lots of people with pretty strong quant skills that can be applied to alot of industries. And they send quite a few of their undergrads to Econ grad programs at places like Stanford, U WI, and Northwestern.

An ISU economist on the Colbert Report…

Super busy today but just wanted to say I LOVE the list and each new entry. I agree ALL the choices are great! It is just so fun to see where everyone is ending up. I actually get a little tear in my eye with each addition. Because you guys were on the wagon for breakfast, we have tequila shots (with lime and salt of course) to catch you up. To go with the tequila we have chips, salsa and of course guacamole.

Happy Thursday!

If you are worried about any kid getting a job in 4 years, let me submit my wonderful nephew as a case study. He is graduating next month from Cornell with a bachelor’s degree in Comparative Literature, with a concentration in Russian Literature. His only summer job experience is waiting tables, and his only internship was with a janitorial company in Moscow (don’t ask). And, drum roll please, he just signed on as a sales rep for Oracle, with, as my brother says, good salary and great benefits. He also gets his pick of living in Austin, TX, Boston, MA or Palo Alto. So…IMO, if he can get a job, there is hope for all of our kids.

Like tx5, I love hearing about each college for all our dearchildren. Congratulations to all! I also really enjoy hearing from those who identify themselves as “lurkers” emerging to post–except I’d like to think of another term. Submariner? Sunbather? Anyone have a good idea?

SomeOldGuy, if you’re getting up with your dog at 5:45, then he’d not dad’s dog, but dad is the dog’s human. I think he owns you. :)

TVenee, sick baby and sick mom up all night is the hardest. Sympathy and ihugs.

Hurrah for megpmom’s nephew. How kind of him to provide hope for all of us literature majors…

Haystack, what a smart parent you are. If he does geology, that seems to go hand-in-hand with archaeology. Who says he can’t search for natural gas and dinosaurs at the same time?

I updated the list because at least one name was missing. Don’t forget that in order to add your name to the list you actually have to copy the most recent list, and add your SN and college in both areas…pixie dust won’t do it for you, lol!! :D

I was going to argue this point but can’t. I will, however, pass along a good line I heard the other day: “Dogs have owners. Cats have staff.”

Ha ha, SOG.
One of our neighbors has a great story about getting a pet dog:

His daughter, who was about 12 years old, asked him if she could get a dog. She said she’d take care of it and everything! This was in January, and it was really cold, and there was always the possibility of snow. He told her that if she got up every morning at 6:00 am and took a 15 minute walk, 30 days in a row, she could get a dog. The dad was willing to walk with her, but she had to initiate it. She started off well, but after about a week she stopped. They still don’t have a dog, and she is a sophomore in college :)

btw, SOG, you made me lol…we have a cat, but she actually acts like a dog most of the time. Best of both worlds!!

TV- Healing vibes to you and yours.

DD13 did not make it to Disneyland yesterday…there was no miracle recovery. At least she’s back in school today. Marathon AP study sessions with their teachers. One teacher is having a study session at her house next weekend with a taco truck! Very nice - my teachers were not so cool.

Our2girls - love the walking the imaginary dog in the snow idea. Smart dad.

Loving the list! Welcome to those climbing aboard from the life boats or stowing away down below. As somebody posted before there are no ‘lesser schools,’ so let’s hear from anybody still stowing away.

Haystack - Thanks for the AG/econ info. DD13 is admitted as a Managerial Econ major at UC Davis which is also in the AG college. I thought it was strange that the business major fell under that college but as you tell it now it makes sense. UCD is big into all things wine. The Mondavi family must be big supporters because there are some pretty cool looking new buildings on campus bearing the name. Boy, that would be a fun internship! I kind of wish she’d do geology and discover some fabulous gemstone deposit - that would be fun! Alas, she might chip a nail so I guess I’ll just keep drooling over those gem sales shows on TV.
