Parents of the HS Class of 2013

Yay for getting off the waitlist!

YDS: thanks for that little tidbit. D2 had a friend who decided not to take a spot on the Carleton waitlist. I’ll have to pass that along.

Luckylu- welcome to the forum, and congratulations on your son’s decision to enroll at Columbia!

Probably too late for eastgrad, but if a girl says she doesn’t want flowers, then she doesn’t want flowers. My D always tells her dance dates this, sometimes they listen, sometimes they don’t, but it is a complete waste for someone who really doesn’t care at all about them.

Mamabear1234, we asked date one more time last night and listened. No flowers. Also, welcome to LuckyLu and Big Blue Congratulations.

Got some quiet time while dTwins are studying for APs to catch up. Here is a confetti-worthy entry:

See, didn’t I tell y’all? The sorting hat knows all. Look at our list! Pretty amazing to see how many of our ds/dd are listed one kid=one college. Almost like musical chairs on the Promenade Deck (where we stand guard nervously, next to the lifeboats). Soon each student will be happily reclining on a comfy seat matched to his or her ergonomic needs.

Does anyone reading this have a child heading to a trade school or community college? For many kids, this is the perfect (and also financially clever) path for them, and we would love for you to represent that experience. Please come join our cruise!

Welcome to all the new posters! BTW, brownpty5, I have a neighbor whose grandson is extremely happy at R-H. That school deserves more national recognition!

Any one else just shadow reading? You have wisdom, experience, and venting to share! Please hop aboard and join all our other new shipmates. :D

Cari: Just curious - Which was more difficult? Wisdom tooth extraction or watching DD decide?

Confetti: I enjoyed your 12 day lyrics. I’ll be watching for poetry next.

Pouncecat: I made you some gingersnaps to help your seasick tummy. Here you go. {shoving cookies into my keyboard now}

Yes, marybee, we are now famous due to our HMFR: “A “reach school” is one that an applicant perceives as a long shot, based on his or her grades and test scores. Some distinguish between “low reach” and “high reach” colleges. An emphatic version of the latter is HMFR, the second and third letters of which stand for a popular expletive.”

I hope Mr. Hoover didn’t mean to say that “mother” is a popular expletive? On some days, I suppose it has been at my house this year.

SOG: I am concerned by your 4/28 entry. Is your dog telling you which song to play aboard? Listening to a dog’s advice did not go well for Sam’s DS.

Also thanks SOG for the Ramones reminder last week; one of my biggest college regrets is not going to their April 23, 1981 MIT concert. Although a frosh on the dorm floor encouraged me to buy tickets to this “great” but not much known band she knew from her home in Queens, I failed to see the value of this stupid new music that you couldn’t dance to and had no melody. One could only bop to punk. Bopping was boring and looked dweeby.

Is any other parent of a DD getting the jitters watching the musicians on SOG’s music videos and wondering what type of creature she will be bringing home for Thanksgiving dinner?

Regarding Anonymity: Most anyone who knows us will recognize us if they click on our username and starts reading our comments (e.g. every one of us with multiples who post in the list of college acceptances). I have even accidently noticed some of my DS/DD’s friends who post in the threads I have read over the last four years. Also, remember that it is pretty easy with the help of some googling to identify many users who are free with some self identifying information. Also warn younger kids that many adcoms monitor college threads even if they are not identifying themselves; if you post your stats and you have applied, they can identify you if they choose.

As you watch the Derby later today, imagine us all starting out the gates last August when the Common Ap was posted and now crossing the finish line. I don’t think any of us lost our jockey. However, I am definitely mud splattered.

Jitters? Perhaps I should encourage Devil Child to dress more like Rivers Cuomo.

[Weezer ‘Buddy Holly’ on Vimeo](http://vimeo.com/51165402)

And don’t worry about the dog. He tends to like classical. (Seriously. That settles him right down on car trips.)

DDHM, glad I stopped by in time for the Derby analogy. Perfect! I’m going to continue it… Having worn white to the last Derby (invoking images of innocent na

DDHM- Thanks for the gingersnaps! Just what I needed. :p

On the ‘mother’ as an explicative note…that reminds me to go wake up sleeping beauty aka DD13 and tell her to get to cleaning before the AP study session…

Good afternoon!

Waitlists: DS and a friend both got offers off of the UCLA waitlist yesterday, DS declined, friend is still considering. I heard today that another friend got in off of the TCU waitlist and will attend. So definitely movement, at least around here.

Finally got the prom update. I was asleep when he got home so had to wait until this morning. Let’s see…prom was fun, food was weird, they didn’t play music you could dance to, S2’s date (BFF) was elected prom queen, but he didn’t get king because a couple football players decided to run at the last minute and “stole” his votes. All in all, a good time. No after parties - a relatively early night. Woke up this morning to drive to see new boyfriend (an hour away) for lunch and pick out his graduation ring with his Grandmother. I just can’t believe how fast this graduation thing is approaching.

Got an update about niece (who couldn’t afford any of her college offers). Apparently they appealed to Santa Clara and got a little bit more aid. So she will live at home and commute. I think it’s probably the best solution. She wanted to go away to school but she only applied to reachy-reach schools (did not get accepted) and financial reaches (accepted but couldn’t afford). Glad that it’s working out for her, even if she does have to live at home. Maybe she can get a job and move into an apartment after a year or two. Lesson: always have a financial safety!!!

Fidoprincess,
Thank you for reaching out to me! I do not have enough posts to reply to your PM. If you PM me your email, I can email you back. Or, I’ll message you when I reach my 15 posts!
Thanks,
Luckylu

SOG: Does the dog verbally opine to you, “SoG, I’m feeling like a little Toccata And Fugue In D Minor before the next exit. Would you be so kind to help a pal with no fingers?” Or does he just wag his tail when the 1812 Overture comes on the radio?

Megpmom: So they played The Ramones at DS’s prom? “they didn’t play music you could dance to”

Luckylu: We feel your pain. You are welcome to give us 13 five word entries in the next hour commenting on your impressions of the Derby. {Or you can just shift among a few threads and type, “Yes, I agree.” “Thank you!” “I’m so sorry.”}

I picked up some bunches of mint leaves today so… Free mint julips at the bar! 'Rents with kids in WL Aspiration Purgatory are allowed to cut to the front of the line. Pounce, I’m not sure if ginger goes with mint, but I surely suspect that our DD’s share the same aurora gene. They should isolate it to cure narcolepsy.

Here we go. Anyone actually there at the derby with a smart phone or got a kid in the Univ of KY marching band?

Congrats on the decision Intparent!

Wow. Did those horses swim or run to the finish? Although it wasn’t the muddiest I’ve seen, it was a bit sloshy there in sections. I think Orb ran well due to having a horsefly gene, which allows you to float above the mud.

Critterpeoplewithhorseknowledge: Do they make horseshoes with paddles or flippers?

Mint juleps are still available for anyone who needs to float above the mud.

^^did you know that horses in the US run on drugs? And I am not talking steroids, apparently they are injected with massive amounts of Furosemide, requiring IV fluids after the race to not die from dehydration :(

Prom night. I hope someone will take nice pictures for me
Not sure how many kids might end up in my basement tonight…

I can’t believe I haven’t been on since Thursday! Busy kids…

S13’s jazz combo has started a new gig, playing at the VFW Friday nights. They play for dinner and tips and help the VFW raise money. Very cool.

Yay for beautiful beach girls ;)

tx5athome - congrats on tennis!

Congrats, too, surfcity. Sounds like a pretty good finish.

Congrats to D on the job, W2BeHome - and the scholarship, too!

Karaoke! I’m in… but y’all might want ear plugs :D

Kennedy - hope the Science Fair is going well - fingers crossed. Glad your S is home.

megpmom - well, some of the kids got accepted where they never applied, so… ;)

congrats on Cornell, learninginprog!

Hope all the proms this weekend are going/went well :)

Congrats on Redlands, idahomom

FlyMe - DH and I are not allowed to attend playoff football games in person because we “jinx” them. Seems okay when we watch on TV though.

Yes, I feel like it wasn’t as challenging as I was frightened of. But the worst parts I didn’t know to be ready for (like waitlists and unopened mail)!

My best thing in the process was to get accepted early to a financial safety. Removed the need to apply to schools just in case the money was good.

Oh pouncecat - hang in there! And awesome for the nurse to stay.

Congrats on Sarah Lawrence, STAmum!

Luckylu - congrats on Columbia!

Yay for Harvey Mudd, intparent.

Congrats on the all-district team, YDS.

Re: flowers - definitely that’s all in the delivery. “I don’t want flowers.” is very different from “You don’t have to get me flowers.”

DDHM - LOL on Sam’s DS!! I don’t listen to my dog, although I do sing to him.

megp - glad prom was fun and really glad your niece ended up with a more-or-less reasonable alternative - I was worried.

Luckylu - I recommend going into the “Chance Me” threads (take pepper spray) and telling all the students asking about Ivies that they should be sure to have safeties. It’s a public service and a way to bring up your post count. Then flee back here to safety.

Am I too late for a mint julip? Have I mentioned that I just finished the easy trip through apps and D15 is gonna be a whole 'nother story?

Lol on your basement Kelowna - better there than lots of other places!

Good luck all IB kids and AP kids over the next few weeks. MTOBEIOF.

Thanks Confetti - son is home safely and daughter took 1st place in her category. Sweet! Son misses London already and daughter described state science fair as “an out of body experience”.

Hello to all the parents out there!
Congrats to all the acceptances! Every son/daughter here sound so smart and I bet every single one of you here are proud of him/her!!!
Anyways, I know this is a parent’s forum but I needed to ask all of you out there–from a parent’s point of view–a question. So I have been accepted/enrolled to UT Austin and am going to the summer orientation this coming June 5th-7th! However, my family lives outside of United States and my dad agreed with me to be here at the parent orientation which lasts only for a day. But the thing is the freshmen orientation, which lasts three days, is exclusively for the students. Does anyone know if I will have time to keep my father company? I am just really worried cause it feels like he will have nothing to do after the first day at parent orientation and I am asking him to be here for nothing…:(

Nothing to do? In Austin? That’s impossible! Do a bit of research. I’ll bet you can find some suggestions for your dad.

Congratulations about Texas, lemonmelon. You must be very excited!

For what it’s worth, I think it’s very sweet of you to be worrying about your father. I’m guessing that those thoughts would never cross D1’s mind. In fact, when she walks off our front porch each morning, I get the feeling that if someone showed her a picture of us, she might not be able to place the names.

Anyways, I don’t think you want to keep TOO much company with your dad during orientation (nice as you are to think about that stuff). You’ve got to be out there making friends!
