Parents of the HS Class of 2013

Very quiet tonight. In case I don’t get on in the morning, have a Happy Mother’s Day, everyone!

Happy Mother’s Day! Looks like most of you are well on your way to implementing Waylon and Willie’s good advice.

[Willie Nelson & Waylon - Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys (Live at Farm Aid 1986) - YouTube](<a href=“Willie Nelson & Waylon - Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys (Live at Farm Aid 1986) - YouTube”>Willie Nelson & Waylon - Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys (Live at Farm Aid 1986) - YouTube)

SomeOldGuy - not sure I would’ve gotten in the way on that one… I’ve always had a certain fondness for cowboys ;).

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there! Enjoy your day.

I was a weeping faucet this morning at Mother’s Day brunch thinking that this might be the last Mother’s Day that I get to spend with my boys. Luckily my DS13a promised me that he will be close enough that he will come home to spend Mother’s Day with me.

D wrote on her card to me that this would be her last Mother’s Day at home for a while. :frowning: Next year she should be wrapping up her last week of classes at this time.

Happy Mother’s Day…I know I am a little late…
DS took me to an early brunch. It was nice to be chauffeured…but now I am reflecting on this being his last Mother’s Day at home also… :(

My D is 16. A high school senior and it’s starting to feel weird grounding her. She was on her cell past 9pm last night (a rule in our home) and then when her boyfriend called a screen shot of his abs popped up while we were visiting her grandmother. Last year I would have confiscated her phone immediately, but now with her heading to college where I will have zero control over such things I feel like what’s the point? I know that’s what she’s thinking too.

Amazhon: I understand your thinking. You really have no control once she is in college, no matter what her age; however, 16 year old brains are very different from 18 year old brains. Maybe the way to handle this is to just be honest and open about your concerns and to state you know she’s going off to college next year, but, she is going to have to be her own “caretaker” and use what good sense she has…and, you might tell her that no matter how old she is…or where she is…you are available to her for a talk, advice, venting or “whatever”…my mom went to college at age 16—and while she believes she was “smart” enough…she reflects now that she was “too young” for certain encounters…and that was in the 50’s…at an all “girls” school…with “house mothers”…! I know I am having the same kind of talks with my 18 year DD…

Thanks Dr. Mom. I think you’re right to say the key is to keep the lines of communication open. I mean honestly in the big picture I’ve got a 16 y.o. who’s never been in any trouble and worked hard enough to graduate early and go to one of the top schools in the country. She’s so naive to such things that she didn’t even realize the pic was inappropriate because “it was just his abs”. I actually had to explain she had a photo of a young man lifting up his shirt and exposing his body and her mother and grandmother had to witness that ON MOTHER’S DAY. I literally almost fainted. But it could be so much worse than that. I am a very lucky and proud mom 96% of the time.

Just popping in to say good luck to all the testers this week!

Good morning!

Good luck to all of the testers today!! DS has the AP Physics test today, Gov tomorrow and Econ on Thursday.

amazhon - I think alot of us are going through the same thought “in 4 months I won’t know if she is doing that or not” but most of our kids aren’t 16. My dd went to her second prom on Saturday and I guarantee that the conversation between us was vastly different than what it would have been last year. Basically it went like this “Just let me know when you get to “x” house (the after party), so I can go to bed knowing you have made it to your destination.” Last year I would have asked her who was going to be there, what time they were going to arrive, what was going to go on when she was there, when she was going to leave etc. Wise friends of mine that have older kids in college have advised me of how to handle this transition. It is probably too late at this point to teach right from wrong. I think most of our kids “get it”.

BTW - all went well - she texted me and had a good time and arrived home at 8:30AM. YIKES!!!

Does anyone’s local paper feature articles on kids signing as athletes at college? Our (little) town paper prints every darn one and I really know nothing about the process, but it bothers me on some level.

I can definitely see writing about the football star who is going to OSU or some big football program, or even most D1 schools. But today there was an article about a kid doing to a podunk college down the street that is one step above a CC.

PEASE DON’T FLAME ME - it’s not about the type of school or kid, really. It’s more that that is the ONLY type of article I have seen about graduating seniors.

Why not feature a kid who is the first in his generation to go to college. OR the one who auditioned for her honors choir at her college? Or another kid who wrote for the newspaper and plans to do so in college. Aren’t they just as valid and similar as the kid who plays third base on the local baseball team?

Hey, iPeeps!

Good luck to all the test takers this week. Ds only has Gov.

I’m hoping everyone had a wonderful Mother’s Day. I’m guessing so judging by the lack of action on here. Ds2 is being wonderful and not fouling the nest. That’s not how this is supposed to go! Not only did he buy me flowers yesterday, but he and some other senior boys surprised their moms by taking us to lunch! That was so unexpected. Several of us moms of senior boys have become quite close, meeting for happy hours every once in a while and volunteering together on senior-year activities, so the boys decided to surprise us yesterday. Later we went to a crawfish boil, watched basketball and other TV and we listened to ds1’s radio show. I am so blessed.

Well, we did have a bit of a dust-up last week, along the lines of today’s conversation about how much more freedom to give them at this point. Definitely being more lenient/flexible, but sometimes it’s still not enough for him. I reassured him that I know what it’s like to be young and in love, but there are still rules.

Freedom: DS is my third and I have become incredibly lenient, which drives his older sister CRAZY!!!

tx5, that’s funny, because don’t I recall that she was doing things she swore she wasn’t? Maybe she just wants her brother to have to sweat things out like she did! LOL

YDS: I think you are right!

surfcity - I think that is just the way local papers are - they have reporters that don’t try to find the stories - just report on what they know. We do laugh a little about the “signing” of kids playing sports where most kids could walk on pretty easy!

Our local paper does do a pretty good job of reporting stuff about academic contests - like math league etc. But only for the local public school kids. To some extent - I think the schools need to call the papers to get any press and the public schools have PR people that do just that.
