Big dilemma-- remember that school where DS technically didn’t apply but he was admitted? He just received an email from their Office of Institutional Research asking him to fill out a survey about the application process. We didn’t get that request from any other university except the one where things are wishy-washy! Should he do it and be honest or just ignore it? If you knew which school this is you wouldn’t believe it!!! I am torn-- do we try to help them and risk ****ing them off or just let it slide and hope they never make the mistake again?

24684

Good morning!!! So fun to see more schools added to the list! Although I am kind of missing the drama of the SS Indecision.

We are entertaining my nephew’s Flat Stanley this week. Anyone else’s kids read that in 2nd grade?

I just realized that I never posted on this thread! I’ve been reading it for a long time though so here is my addition=Son chose Columbia and will be joining TVenee’s daughter and Luckylu’s son.

Congrats to all the families! What a wonderful list of colleges our kids will be attending!

24686

Yes! Both kids did the Flat Stanley project… seems like yesterday!

24687

I don’t think I ordered enough graduation invitations.

24688

We had a number of Flat Stanley’s (and one Flat Veronica) come for visit. Apparently, everyone wants a photo in front of the White House. I thought it was more important to take them out to Ben’s CHili Bowl…they need feeding up!

24689

YDS, I scanned ours and emailed or FBed several additional ones. Easy smeasy.

Sent from my VM670 using CC

24690

Awesome, Greek!

24691

@GreekMana-Yes, definitely have me outnumbered. We visited D U K E on the way to U N C and decided to put in an app. Sometimes I swear those admission people have a sixth sense, because Chapel Hill was her first choice from the moment she visited, but we said hey, what the heck. She’s exactly where’s she’s suppose to be, it wound up being cheaper than our state school, which is amazing. I couldn’t be happier with her choice. So being outnumbered is A OK. Maybe we can carpool on non game days if any of you are in the Northeast!

24692

Thanks so much, GreekMana - I do think it’s that much sweeter in many ways although I would like to have the $$$ back we spent on applying and the like. Congratulations to you as well!

24693

GreekMama - I would definitely fill the survey out - I would think they would want to know thier mistake.

24694

Wherenext - I’m glad I’m not alone. Just checked the grades…not good… DD13 had a hole to dig out of in a couple of classes due to several bouts of sickness/injury this year. Instead of A’s and a couple of D’s she now has managed to average that into a bunch of C’s and an F! The worst part is she does not seem to have a sense of urgency in catching up the late assignments. Sure she stayed late for an hour at school today…but that hardly comes close to the time this is going to take. I told her this is when you learn to burn the mid night oil - don’t even sleep until you’re caught up. Maybe I should not have said that, maybe I should not have had to say it.

24695

I just found my D’s Flat Stanley doll yesterday and we looked over his booklet and pictures! Honestly, I have no idea who these people were who ended up entertaining hers. And we have also been talking about Flat Stanley lately… about how a college application needs to show that you are not just a “Flat Stanley”. Who knows what his admissions would have been? I predict colleges would have found him to be one-dimensional, and he would have been waitlisted everywhere…

24696

Well, pouncecat… Same issue as you with lack of urgency! There seems to be no consequences either. She got her first choice dorm assignment (a very cool spot)and an academic award today. She is incredibly lucky that they aren’t counting this semester! I may have taken it a step further than you with, “If you think it is okay to lie to me then I am out…no prom help or graduation help from me.” Think I might have over reacted? H says, no drinking, no sex, no drugs…lighten up. He’s right.

inparent- one dimensional.

Go Greek! Fill out the survey!

Where do I get the best under-bed riser storage drawers?

24697

So DD has a 3-hour detention this morning. Ahem, last week was the annual “walk to the ballpark to raise money for the school and see a game” day. DD wasn’t feeling so well that morning. And neither were 60% of the senior class. 150 seniors in detention this morning. It’s funny because this is such an unorganized group of seniors that they haven’t been able to arrange a senior prank, or a senior ditch day. But I guess they were all symbiotacally connected last Thursday…

24698

My DS would be jealous of those whose last semester does not count! We have to submit final grades and if they are not up to standard the offer of admission can be rescinded! It does not happen often, but we personally know of at least two who have had this happen in the last few years. Our state flagship has just gotten super competitive! DS has let some things slide, but it’s been more along the line of chores and not grades, which I can live with for now;)

24699

LOL SomeOldGuy - you are right. We definitely have upped the “tie-appropriate” events.

wherenext - It is good to have these little reminders that they are human and kids. Well, it’s good later.

S13 has one AP down, 4 next week. Two biggies on Monday  - we’ll see.

Congrats on St. Olaf’s ssacdfamily :).

fineartsmajormom - good luck with the tuition garden and tuitionmobile… but wow congrats on UPenn. I can definitely see how that would be a hard one to turn down.

Congrats Amazhon on Chapel Hill!

Wow BTMell - congrats on the dream and on being the rare acceptance-after-deferral :D!

ree - how did I not remember Beloit? Great school, I’m looking closely at it for D15!

congrats on MIT, luisarose - lots of STEM kids here!

Greek - I don’t know on the survey - I’d probably lean on the side of honesty. What’s the downside if they get irked?

tx5 - I’m missing the drama too. I’m still checking the mail obsessively… <sigh></sigh>

I remember Flat Stanley - S13’s went to England :).

Welcome fido - congrats on Columbia!

Sorry, pounce - hopefully some work gets done this weekend?

wherenext - I don’t know about the best, but I heard (have not personally verified) that you can order at The Container Store now and deliver to a store near college. I expect they would have good stuff, but don’t know about price.

Kennedy - guess they had an organic prank?? Detention doesn’t change any privileges, does it?

sophieandlola - we are in the same boat, and someone from S13’s school got rescinded from Notre Dame in the past. Of course, no-one is allowed to tell us what the grades were, but it kept him pretty motivated. S13 has translated that into letting outside scholarship apps slide… but I guess that could be worse.

DD13 is well aware of rescinding… because one DD10’s best friends lost a full ride after grade check and is now struggling at CC. Our CC is so over enrolled due to so many people losing jobs and going back to school it’s just a nightmare trying to get the classes needed to get transferred in a timely manner. Which is part of the reason I can’t understand DD13 not panicking and fixing those grades immediately, if not sooner.

This reminds me though… many posts ago someone asked for stories of CC or tech schools…DD10 always planned to do the two years at CC then transfer to a nearby CSU. So in her senior year when she was hating preCalc she dropped it with the idea that she would just take it at the CC after she did the year in Germany. Well she fell in love with Germany and would have immediately been able to go to medical school - except for that one class. She could not just take that class and go because the German system requires you to either start immediately after HS or finish the BS. So if not for that one class which she dropped she would be just two years from being a vet right now. Instead, she can’t get the required classes to get transferred to the CSU. In addition to over enrollment we have budget cuts. She needed two classes to transfer but only one section of each was offered and they were offered at the same time…thus, impossible to do both.

Just to show everything works out… we insisted DD10 work. We paid just under $3k for a phlebotomy course at a trade school in LA… she has been working full time+ since the month she received her license. The course only lasted six weeks and she’s earning $36k per year. She’ll live on her savings while in medical school in Germany. As a further benefit to the ‘messing about’ she’s done… now DD13 will be doing the same year in Germany program and they are hoping to go through medical school together.

Just FYI - doctors in Germany go to school for only 5 years after HS. They don’t repeat the math, history, art that they should have taken in HS. Their HS is one year longer then ours. They do a year of public service -either military or civil then off to medical school. Foreign students don’t do the service year. Vets and human doctors start out together for all the basics like chemistry, biology, etc. Then in their second or third year they start clinical training either on humans or animals. I found that very interesting. I also found it interesting that they don’t revere their doctors like we do. They consider medical school to be equivalent to a trade school. Wow. On the upside they treat their doctors and nurses much more humanely. Like our truck drivers they can only work 8 hours in 24 hours! When DD10 was in the hospital in Germany I was shocked to find 3 nurses for 10 patients. Also, the cost of medical school is less than $600.00 per year. Living expense is $8k. So no reason to be in debt. What a concept.
