S2 has been applying for jobs but with no luck so far. He’s been called for an audition for the musical Fame (local production). He knows the director well, so its likely he’ll be cast. That should keep him busy in the evenings. Otherwise, I guess he’ll play a lot of video games and hang out by the pool… what a life! H is leaving for London in mid June but we promised S2 that we’d stay in town til August. If the house sells quickly, we’ll stay with friends. I guess I’m spending the summer packing.

Still over 3 weeks of school left here, and still work being done in classes! Plus it’s playoff time for the sports team, which could go 2 more weeks depending on results. She would like to get a job, but with practice every night it will have to wait longer.

STEMfamily - huge congrats to your D, that is amazing!!!

tougis - is the music festival Firefly? I’m sure it is. My S and his girlfriend are going too. It’s supposed to be awesome, I kind of wish I was going! LOL

S got phased out of the job he’s had all year early because they wanted to start his replacement, so he is probably bumming around and hanging out with friends this summer. It’s not a long time though - he doesn’t graduate until 6/10, and then we are leaving the first week in August to drive down to Bama. I told him he’s lucky - earning a full scholarship to college means no pressure about getting a job this summer. I know he will be going to the beach with his girlfriend’s family for a week, going to Firefly, and possibly going camping with his two best friends, but that’s it for scheduled activities as far as I know.

I can’t believe we leave in a bit more than a week for his freshman orientation. Where does the time go???

Edit: megpmom, congrats to your S on the scholarship!

Wow guys, we are almost done! Can you believe we are responsible for creating these modern miracles? Let’s give ourselves a pat on the back today.

D and I on much better terms after talking (yeah). When did the tables turn and she makes me cry instead of the other way around? I looked out my window yesterday and in a tree was a baby bird that had dropped from her nest. I was on the phone with my mom and yelled out “oh no, this poor bird is falling out of the tree. it can’t fly yet.” My mother asks me if I can reach it but I was upstairs and it was already higher than me. My mom said maybe the mom will come and put it back. I watched mesmerized that any minute this poor baby bird was going to fall to it’s death. I watched the bird flutter its heavy wings and jump to the next branch. Then I realized the bird hadn’t fallen out of it’s nest at all. It left the nest. It was taking it’s first steps. It’s first flight and I’m watching it transfixed and scared and nervous from my window. And I thought of my darling daughter. True story. I couldn’t make that up if I wanted to. God is good and I needed to see that, at that moment yesterday. And yes, I’m aware that I’ve totally lost it at this point, but I’ve always been told the truly crazy are the ones who don’t realize how crazy they are. Right?

Friday was the last day of classes. Yearbooks are signed. Today is a scholarship luncheon that I forgot to buy tickets for… Hoping I can pay cash at the door. Next week-3 finals, my Ds birthday and a funeral. June 1 morning-graduation; evening-she’s off to the beach spending senior week with friends. Her very first unsupervised overnight trip.

Last day of school is June 14th with graduation on June 15th. I am jealous so many of you are out of school already!

Prom is on June 1st and they have an all night grad party right after graduation. Normally they would have it at the school but due to renovations, they are having it at a community rec center. It has a pool plus a casino etc. Suppose to be lots of fun.

The next week we fly to Minnesota for orientation. Also he needs to have his wisdom teeth removed so this summer will fly by!

Graduation here is in three weeks. School right up until then, though in some classes not a lot is getting done. In the meantime, lots of end-of-year events. Today is a banquet, a picnic and a big lakehouse party for about two dozen kids and some of us parents. Really looking forward to that! Then next week is the big academic awards ceremony.

Prom also first week of june. Graduation is end of June. DD has job at summer camp she’s always been to. Not sure when she’s supposed to go to College orientation. She refuses to look at the emails…or says there arent any…What about that bird leaving the nest??? Mine is hopping around the edge, I think…

This is the first mention (from Amazhon) I’ve seen of senior week. Here on the east coast it is a big tradition for seniors to rent a house at the beach and have a week long party. I have never been in favor of it and I can’t believe that so many parents let their kids do it. S didn’t really try hard to put something together so we opted to take our family vacation that week instead - which is truly one of the only weeks available before his summer job starts.

Is senior week a big deal in your towns? It always strikes me as an accident waiting to happen.

No senior week here and for that I’m very relieved. Guess their are benefits living hundreds of miles from the shore. We still have five weeks till graduation.

@surfcity. I’m on the east coast as well. BIG tradition here. I wasn’t allowed to do it when I was a kid and I’m anxious letting her do it. What helped me with my decision is I know the group of girls very well she’ll be staying with (non drinkers, non smokers, no drugs). I know the parents of the girls she’s going with. I know who they are renting the house from and they would have serious consequences when they got home if they didn’t respect the property. Two of them have boyfriends who aren’t going to the beach, although they might visit on one of the days. They’ve all agreed no overnight guests. But most importantly from everything I’ve seen the past four years, these are a group of girls who like being with each other and look out for each other. They aren’t the type to sit back and watch a friend derail.

Now what is going to be going on at all the other houses, I can’t say…

Yes, senior week here. Pennsylvania. I agree that it is an accident waiting to happen. We dodged that bullet with older daughter who went to Bethany Beach with her BFFs and stayed at a home owned by the grandparents of one of the friends. AND the grandparents stayed there as well!

This year, our daughter and her BFFs are going to Hilton Head to stay at a home that belongs to a relative of one of the girls. AND the father of two of the girls will be there! One of them is the principal at their HS, so again, we are assured they will have fun, but will be safe.

It never occurred to me that this was a geographical phenomenon. Those of you that don’t have to deal with it are so lucky!

Next crisis. How to get a cello from Indiana to Minnesota
A. Without driving it to New York as the sixth passenger in a five man car
b. without buying it its own plane ticket
C. Without incurring the wrath of god, otherwise known as the 18 year old owner who swears it cannot go anywhere safely in a box, even though it arrived safely in a box two years ago.

No senior week here either that I know of (California). My older son did go camping (at the beach)for a weekend with a big group from his senior class 3 years ago.

No senior week in Texas. Some kids have lake houses that the kids use, but nothing organized on a large scale. They do have a graduation night event with casino games, bowling, laser tag etc. D1 didn’t go but S2 might. He’s a lot more social than she was. Graduation is at noon but since all the relatives are coming for the recital a week earlier, we won’t be having a party or anything.

I think the senior week plans where they stay in a family’s house, preferably with a parent, can be a lot of fun. And in fact, I was willing to let DS and select friends stay at our vacation home on their own, because I know our neighbors would keep an eye on them and there would not be other friends around to mix things up. He was not really into that.

Most all the kids who go go to Ocean City MD. THey rent condos (from whom, I can’t imagine) and stay 5, 6, 7 to a condo, sleeping on floors and so forth. There are huge parties every night, I have heard first hand from kids who went last year and kids who got arrested the year before .

WHen we were in Ocean City NJ (a dry town) last summer, we saw all sorts of unbelievable T shirts and other merchandise for sale that said “XYZ High School Drinking Team” and all sorts of references to pot or sex, with actual names of all the big high schools around the area!

I do know some kids who came home early last year, because the whole drink until 3 am, sleep until 2 pm, rinse, repeat, got old very fast. But not for all of them obviously.

I went to Ocean City NJ and stayed at a friends house with 6 girls. We had a great unwild time! D is starting work at camp and will be unable to do that. It is very popular here, just a few hours from the beach.

@lisa6191–Not sure if the music fest D1 is going to is Firefly. I’ll ask. Kinda sounded like Woodstock II or something when she described it, so I’m guessing she may not be squeaky clean when she gets back…

ssacdfamily-- no, I don’t’ think it ever ends! I am worried about getting a kid across the country to school. I can’t imagine trying to get large accouterments there as well!

Amazhon-- I love the bird story. So sweet and poignant!

Thanking the stars above that we don’t have to deal with what you all are calling Senior Week!!! Yuck for the parents. BUT-- as a Greek my kids want to be indoctrinated into spending a week alone in Mykonos! I’m still trying to decide if that’s going to happen or not…

I went a little crazy buying college swag to have as graduation gifts. That along with grandma’s quilts will be very cool! And I finally found a bakery that will custom design the cake with both school logos on it in school colors.

Graduation is in three weeks and then a week later we all leave for a well deserved vacation! It will be the first summer in at least five years that the kids can just have fun and relax and not “perform”!

We have all done an amazing job getting our kids to this point! YEAH for the 'rents!!!

Senior Week?? Never heard of that in my area. Who in the world would rent a beach house to a dozen 17-18 yr olds? Yikes! I can understand going to a family house, but I cannot imagine the Security Deposit on a house rented by high school seniors with no supervision.
