Parents of the HS Class of 2013

Wilma: When is he going to orientation?

YDS: WOW!!! What great news!!!

Congrats YDS!

tx5. - attending the June 21/22 orientation.

So…this is where they hid you all! I missed a couple of days and when I came back I couldn’t find this place! Like a kid that went to camp and his parents moved!

Whew - lots of great news on those scholarships, prom dates, APs finished, sorry I missed it…but congratulations to all with good things happening. Sorry the WL pain isn’t over yet.

Speaking of pain I don’t even want to imagine the boyfriend facing manslaughter after crashing and loosing his girlfriend’s life. My brother and his prom date waited in vain for his friend and his date to arrive at the prom…both died…it’s been over 30 years and that still hurts.

DD13 received an email confirmation that her deferral is approved! Yay! Now to finish the digging out of the grades so as to not get the boot after all this work. Really, does it end?

DD13 is not happy that she has to retake the SAT on June 1. But if she wants to keep her options open for medical school in Germany she’ll need to score 30 more points on her math or critical reading. If not she can go but she would have to do a year preparatory course…she’s unhappy to be testing with the younger students… but this saves her a whole year so it’s get over it time.

Here’s to a Happy Memorial Day weekend, everybody. Graduation - done. Party - this Monday. Let the summer begin!

Happy Memorial Day weekend! S3 arrived in DC safe and sound.

Wilma: we are going the next week.

Walking Tess-thanks for the heads up about the double comforter. I bought one but was going to trim it and sew it into a XLTwin size. Good idea since D’s going to have risers.

What are the best Fans for dorms?

Pounce- So sad about your brother’s friend and of course the new batch of tragedies!

Congrats on the grad speech honor and scholarships still coming.

Congrats on the deferral coming through Pounce! My D is still digging out from the dip in her grades. She is only digging with a teaspoon though…

D got a very nice little scholarship last week. She is very honored because of the source is near and dear to her! D is being honored at school with one of the senior awards for an academic department too. One of only a few, she was told. The office wanted to make sure H and I are there when she gets it. I am looking forward to it.

Prom was fun for D! No one here drives as there are limos and for those that don’t want to spend the extra money, buses to prom. Parents pick up from after parties, or pre-determined drivers or kids plan spend the night to avoid awful situations. There were great stories of moms and dads going out at 2 or 4 am to pick up SUV loads of kids and carpooling them to other parties or to their homes. I was impressed with parents walking kids to cars to make sure they were getting in safe cars. Some parents said that kids had been drinking a lot others not but no judgement just rides that night! Maybe it isn’t the perfect way to handle it, but it was nice to have everyone make it back to school that Monday with no jail time or trips to the hospital. That is a successful event for me!

I’m looking for that great thread about what to take/what not to take to college but I can’t seem to find it (my search skills are getting rusty I guess) - can anyone give a link to that? Seems like a good time to make a list - I remember it was really useful in packing up my son 2 yrs ago.

Found one of those threads: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/926984-10s-what-did-you-send-college-your-child-never-used-32.html#post15992519

My S’s new roommate will either be amused or terrified when S2 unpacks his dorm room stuff. As I mentioned before, I have already packed up all of his stuff and transported it to the east coast where it sits in storage. Since we’re moving to London in a few weeks, I needed to get it out of the house. Anyway, his “college” stuff consists of very used towels, sheets and blankets, a few pairs of jeans and t shirts, a PS3 and loads of games, and lots of “toys.” He’s a pack rat by nature and he was scared that if he didn’t take it to college, he would never see it again. So we have his favorite stuffed animals, his blanky, Game of Thrones dragon figurines, his special edition Guildwars monster model, and framed pictures of his cat. I’ve warned him that if he can’t find a place for it in his dorm room, then it goes back to his sister’s apt (she is fighting this - lol :))

But there were a few useful items that we learned from experience with D1 - long ethernet cable (you never know where the internet plug is in the room), powerstrip/surge protector, duct tape, lots of hangers. Trying to decide if he would use a shower tote. I think not, but we’ll wait to see what the other guys have.

Good morning! Happy Memorial Day! A big thank you to all of the veterans!

I am assuming DS is having a great time in Washington DC, since I have only gotten a few very limited text messages.

I went to Scotsfest yesterday which is a Scottish festival at the fairgrounds. I am maybe an 1/8th Scottish (but look like I am a lot more) so it was fun to kind of connect with my roots. Lots of bagpipes and kilts and very fun.

I’m curious. How does one “look Scottish”? Is it the kilt?

What do boys do if they don’t have a shower tote? Just carry their shampoo and soap and bowl in their arms to the shower?

I am trying to develop a shopping list for S and Dh keeps telling me I am listing lots of “girl” stuff on it :0 I know boys don’t usually do photo frames, posters, bulletin boards, etc
but I thought a shower tote and shoes were must-haves

Ds1 uses a tote. Shoes are a must. Would depend on the bathroom setup for a tote, I guess.

Shower tote: D1 had a shower tote and a cubby in the bathroom to put it in. I imagine if you didn’t have tote you could just put it ini the cubby. Just realized “cubby” is from preschool, maybe in a college bathroom they call it something else.

boys: I sent S2 with a photo cube of photos from high school etc… Also sent some prints and when I visited I saw that a girl from down the hall had put them on the wall for him. So they may say they don’t want them, but might actually appreciate them.

Perhaps red hair, fair skin, and freckles?

Flip flops - got to add that to the list. Ds ('11) used his tote eventhough his bathrm was within his suite - mainly to keep his stuff separate from his roommates and since the shower itself was coffin-sized, you couldn’t exactly leave anything inside the shower. I love these lists from the colleges that list “stationary” and “dvd player” - need to update it! “evening/formal attire for special events” - heehee!

Success! I was finally able to get S2 out to purchase a new suit - and they are rushing the tailoring so it will be ready for his recital on Saturday. Now just need to get new shirt and tie and we’re good to go! Busy week - tomorrow is a concert with the school jazz band, Wednesday the grandparents (the difficult ones) come into town, Thursday is the dress rehearsal for the recital and an extra piano lesson, Friday pick up the suit and D1 at the airport, Saturday recital at 2pm and dinner for 15 family members following at S2’s favorite restaurant. Oh, and then Sunday I leave for a 3 day conference. Calgon - take me away!

I asked S2 about the shower shoes and tote. He said he didn’t use them at his six week summer program in the dorm, but he might for the whole year. I suppose I’m not out a lot of money if I throw in a tote and flip flops on my next Walmart run.

Happy Memorial Day weekend - we are all done and graduated! Woohoo!

I saw the bedding discussion but here are a few things that are not on most lists that I sent my older daughter with to college that she has said over and over were life savers - a doorstop (in fact when we helped her move into an apt, she said, grab the doorstop!), Amazon Prime, emergency credit card, and a hanging jewelry holder with zippers.

We were just talking about Amazon Prime today. I think I’ll sign S2 up so he can just order the things he needs when we’re out of the country. There is very little shopping within walking distance of his campus and you can’t beat free 2 day shipping. Looks like it’s free for six months and then $39 a year. And then they throw in the free streaming movies and TV. Sounds like a good deal to me.
