Parents of the HS Class of 2013

Hey 'rents!

I’ve been so, so busy lately. I barely have any time to do anything anymore! I received word I will be receiving a scholarship from our local Rotary next week, so that’s exciting! There are 24 school days, five of which are “finals” days, until I graduate. I’m going on so many field trips that I actually only have 13 school days left! That’s absolutely CRAZY and so hard to wrap my head around! Next week I only have one day of school and then I’m off for a week because I have various events and college orientation! I can’t believe it’s really coming to an end!

If I’m worrying about a wedding before 2020, Devil Child is going to be a lot more worried about ME. That said, he enjoyed prom and significantly out-punted his coverage in the date department.

And Swizzle, 24 days? Yikes! Do you go to school in the Southern Hemisphere?

@SomeOldGuy I actually go to school in Connecticut! We had 10 snow days this year! Including weekends and Memorial day, we have 35 days left. eisodmroikrfmeri AHHHH

Hey Swizzle, thanks for the update!

At least you KNOW the number of days you have left. For D1 it all depends on whether she’s got at least a B+ in everything on some unspecified future date. If not, there’ll be at least one final in something. Her “last day of school” is like a mirage in the near distance, fading, getting brighter, then fading again.

Attending big awards breakfast w S2 this morning. The scholarship was from the school district foundation, but it is supported by one of the big hi-tech corporations in town, so we get to go to their headquarters for the breakfast. Beats the high school cafeteria. I made S2 shave since they might take his picture. I am not a popular mom this morning!:)

Getting ready for 4 day weekend! S2 is finishing up filming his senior film project. I hope to take him suit shopping - but I’ll probably have to lie and say we’re going to dinner in order to get him in the car. One more week to go!!!

Good morning!

It is much slower here since we “moved”.

DS had his tennis banquet last night. It went very well, they have a really great team this year attitude-wise. Plus they were league champs which was fun although he and his partner lost in the first round of the CIF individuals this morning. Still several weeks of school left. He leaves for a week in DC on Saturday morning.

I agree that is much slower since the moved us! It took me a day or two to find it and still can’t find it on my iphone app!!!

Is anyone else following the thread on the DUI prom night? Scary stuff - I truly feel bad for NorthCarolina Dad - all the great parenting in the world can’t keep teenagers from doing stupid things sometimes!!!

My d13 is finished with school. She has never had a B in high school and she thinks she will have all A’s and one C this quarter! Actually makes me laugh!!! I guess she can continue to say that she never got a “B”!!! She really didn’t like AP Gov’t !!! And it didn’t help that she did not even bring her book home to study for the final. She said everyone bombed it but the teacher NEVER curves so it should be interesting. I really don’t care and neither does she!!!

Now on to 4 days of graduation festivities and then graduation Wednesday night. So many mixed emotions!!

D1 off to see Ke$ha (sp?) and Pit Bull tonight. She’ll be doing a lot of driving in the driving rain.

ahsmuoh, I was following the North Carolina DUI prom night thread for a while. Terribly scary, enough to make you hyperventilate. I’m going to ask my niece to read it in a few days. Not right now, though. Two kids who graduated from her high school a couple of years ago were in a car crash a week or so ago. They were high school sweethearts and were coming back from a wedding party; the driver had been drinking. The girl was killed and the boyfriend has been charged with manslaughter. I can’t fathom the pain of those families…

I don’t quite know how to segue from that but I stopped by this friendly forum (albeit a way too quiet one) to ask a question about college bedding…

I’m confused (and I know many of you will be perplexed that I can’t figure this out – bear with me!). Should I buy all three of these? What order does she put them on?

Do I get a mattress encasement for general hygiene and to protect against bed bugs, allergens, etc.?

Do I also get a foam mattress topper like this for comfort?

Do I get a mattress pad like one of these to go over the topper so she’s not sleeping directly on foam?

My older D has a memory foam pad that she adores. She even took it to her internship this summer. I think she has a mattress pad/cover that fits over the memory foam pad and her mattress - at least that’s what I sent her with freshman year. Don’t have a full enclosure/zippered cover - we don’t have bedbugs in our part of the country and I never even thought about it.

GreekMana: thank you for your optimism! I think…
I think the biggest thing for me is to “let go” and let her "figure this out’… She did recently get asked by one of the schools if she wanted to stay on the waitlist. She has not replied, to my knowledge. I have suggested she stay on it because you never know…but, she isnt so sure. I think this is just the first of many examples where the “adult child” begins making decisions for herself, and will not/does not always do what the parent thinks is a good idea! For me, whichever school she actually attends in the fall is really great… I think I am just wanting to start thinking of other things… But, I know that if her dream #1 or #2 school called her tomorrow, she’d be thrilled!

Kelbee – the mattress encasement you linked to seems to be something that would go around a box spring as well as a mattress. Some (many? most?) dorm beds are just mattresses on platforms (no box spring.) For my D, we purchased a zip mattress cover, and a thick mattress pad to sort of do double duty for topper and mattress pad:

From experience, I will just mention that a lot of bedding is fairly easy to get to school (in it’s lovely vacuum sealed packaging), but a bit more challenging to get home at the end of the year!

We also went with a double-sized comforter, so that when the bed was up on risers, the extra comforter width would hang down and hide all the stuff stashed under the bed – that seemed to work well.

I have to admit I loved the shopping!

DS had an amazing Scholarship Celebration last night. We knew about 5 of the awards but he got an additional 5!! He was even lucky enough to get several that are renewable and one that only goes to one student each year!! So happy that his hard work has paid off and relieved to know he won’t need huge loans to pay for school! Whew! Now to figure out how all of this scholarship stuff works…some go directly to the school and some go directly to him. Hmmm…I know he has to report them to the school, just not sure how everything else works. Graduation is exactly one week away but he is finished with classes today.

Good morning!!

all things mattress: My D1 had a foam mattress pad that she got I think at Costco that she loved. S2 has bad allergies so we got the bed bug/allergen mattress cover and put that over the foam mattress pad and mattress.

Congratulations on all the graduations, scholarships etc…

Thanks for all the mattress pad tips!

And, yes, congrats on those scholarships… Keep 'em coming!

Re: getting mattress stuff home - memory foam pads are next to impossible to squeeze back down into a manageable size once they are out of the original packaging. It’s like those little monsters that the kids had when they were little. You put them in water and they grew 10X bigger! lol

Good news today. Graduation is not until 6/20, but they had try-outs for speeches this week and DS found out today he will be giving one. I am very excited for him.

@tx5athome - great accomplishments for your DS. Mine also plays tennis and is interested in studying economics. Maybe they’ll meet up at Cal.

tx5, I’m so excited for him!

In great news, ds just called to say he found out that he won the top scholarship we were targeting. Not only is it renewable all four years, but it comes with a job during all breaks, including this summer!!!

YDS-Fantastic news! Congrats!
