You are so awesome, Swizzle! Congratulations!

We love you Swizzle and wish you all the best!

Graduation is Tuesday for us. DD just wants it all to be over all ready! She’s a counselor at sleepaway camp this summer and can’t wait. I’m beginning to miss her already. Once she goes to camp…she’s pretty much gone. She’ll do the most of her dorm shopping etc. the week before she goes to college!

I graduate on Wednesday. Going to two parties today.

I started dorm shopping. Some XL twin bed sheet sets at Marshall’s for only $15! The patterns were more on the feminine side.

I love Marshall’s! I’ll take a look.

Just wanted to add my name to the “Swizzle Rocks!” consensus.

Also, I’m sad that this thread got waylaid, apparently because the administrators moved it (no doubt for a terribly important reason). It’s an old, extremely successful thread (hoary, even), and I’d hoped that it would continue for years to come, but at least 3/4 of the gang seems to have disappeared, all in a single day.

<a href=“Simon & Garfunkel - Overs - YouTube”>Simon & Garfunkel - Overs - YouTube;

We had a successful grad party yesterday. Next up orientation on Friday.

I too am very sad about the slowdown of the thread.

Do we have a thread that lists school each of our kids chose?

I know the 3.3 thread had a list…

The lists are on here somewhere. Page after page of them.

The most recent list I found was on page 1653, middle of May - pasted below.

If you want to add your s/d’s school, copy the both lists below and add your screen name and school to both lists so we don’t lose anyone!

Ok…let’s keep this thread agoing…D graduated last week.

WHat I would like to see are really good ideas on how to motivate a burned out hs grad?

My D seems unaware of how fast the days are going by and I know there will be total panic in August. D was a workaholic in HS and has become a tv watching-vegetable for the past month when not at her part time job. She seems absolutely unable to complete the simplest chore or college-related task without me nagging/writing notes/etc.

Luckily, the school seems very very well organized and is nagging and sending reminders for filling out health forms, signing up for meal plans, etc. so it isn’t just me making unhappy noises. Nevertheless, the lump in the basement in front of the tv only moves to check out the new graduation photos on facebook. She is in danger of missing pre registration, appointment with advisor, etc…

I have tried to motivate through fear but it doesn’t seem to be working. I told her if she doesn’t get stuff done, she will pay the price, literally. For example the exemption for health insurance…it is extremely expensive to not complete the waiver and I will not pay. Also, any late fees …I can’t pay the tuition if she doesn’t send me the bills and get me onto their bill pay system. She is getting some things done but not others. Perhaps my threat is not credible…

I work full time and long hours and am horrified every day when I get home and find nothing done…by then she is at her job so the dance starts with me leaving a list of “to dos” (combination of household chores and college prep stuff) …then I make nagging phone calls at lunchtime from my office…yes, she is definitely motivated she says, will do…she says…then I come home at 7 and find…zilch done, house messier than when I left…she gets home late from work 11:30pm and we have an argument…and the dance starts again the next day. She was never a gung-ho chore kid but things did get done before…and what is with the lack of enthusiasm to get the college stuff done?..I would be knocking out all that stuff just out of sheer excitement to be going away and signing up for classes, buying the book for the orientation discussions, etc…but nope,…nothing…
HELP!

Fineartsmom: I would not worry too much. Both my college kids become absolute slugs when they come home, but when they are at school or work they are quite productive.

Forgot to say S3 had orientation for his job over the weekend, and “meet the instructor” night last night and this is his first real day of work (he is a sailing instructor). Last year he had 8 year olds and up. This year he has 5, 6 and 7 year olds. It should be interesting.

S2 is pretty lazy for the most part - lots of video game playing and TV watching. He did get a very part time work at a recording studio owned by family friends. He works about 10 hours a week - answering phones, opening mail, getting coffee, etc. He’s also getting some experience with mixing and editing. And he has show rehearsals every night from 7-10 or 11. So, when he’s being lazy - I don’t bug him too much. I leave a list of chores and they eventually get done.

S2’s college is very uncommunicative. We’d heard that from other students/parents so I expected it. But, really, we haven’t even heard when move-in day is, or when classes start, etc. I did look up the academic calendar online so I think classes start after labor day. Other than that, it’s a mystery.

Regarding slug on couch… Your D’s mode of operation sounds very similar. I have a slightly different problem. I cannot get my D to get motivated to get a job. I have cut off all spending money and told her she has to get a job if she wants to do Anything. She did go out one day and actually hand out some resumes, etc. But, by this time all summer jobs are already filled. I’m going to start hearing ‘not my fault’ I cannot find a job.

So our problem here at our house is Boyfriend. She spends every waking moment with boyfriend (who is a really nice guy) because he will be leaving for one month this summer and they just cannot be separated. Same mode of operation… wakes up late and runs through house 'I’m late for xxxx, we have big plans, I’m late" while I follow her out the door with the long list of chores/college stuff that she hasn’t done. Home late and we start all over again the next day.

For the last week and a half her Uncle has been visiting and spoiling her. He jokes that he is buying her affection. My attempt at cutting off the money supply has been thwarted… he buys her what she needs, hands her money, even paid for $50 haircut the other day. He does all her chores (emptying dishwasher, cleaning kitchen, etc.). Oh well, he left today and I’ll just keep trying to get something out of her :)

Did I mention that I don’t think she has even logged into her college website. I finally went in there last week to see if there was any kind of bill that needed to be paid.

I cannot get a straight answer out of her on whether she needs to register for Fall classes yet. She keeps saying that the school assigns classes for the first semester. So I go into her ‘schedule’ just to see if there was anything assigned and this is what I find:

Major = Undeclared (not true, what’s up with this???)
Intro to Painting
PE
Intro to Dance
Freshman Seminar
English 101 (not right, why’d I waste all that money on AP English tests???)

@#%#@^#$^ - what kind of schedule is this!!! This has got to be a mistake
Are you kidding me??? I am not spending hard earned tuition on these classes - she can go to CC to dabble in painting and dance. OK, end of rant. I am sure it is some kind of mistake or joke - if there is such a thing as a Registrar Joke.

Needless to say, she had better get to the bottom of this THIS WEEK or steam is going to start coming out of Mom’s ears.

@Coralbrook, I feel your pain and your post made me smile. I’m not allowed to log on DD college account so I joined the NYU parents forum to keep up with the freshman news. When I read that the course sign up was about to open on line, I reminded DD of the date and time. Time was noon, DD started to her sign up 6 hours later. No surprise that all the great electives she read about were full and all the best time slots for her required courses were taken. She will have a crazy schedule her freshman year and I hope she will listen to her mother next year and be ready at 11:59 to sign up for her sophomore schedule.
I hope your D gets her schedule straightened out.

I just got this book for D. Prof. Wilson was on Talk of the Nation this past week. I hope she likes it. Ira Flatow was gushing.

Letters to a Young Scientist
Book by E. O. Wilson
Pulitzer Prize–winning biologist Edward O. Wilson imparts the wisdom of his storied career to the next generation.Inspired by Rainer Maria Rilke’s Letters to a Young Poet, Edward O. Wilson has distilled…

This is week 3 of D’s biomedical research program. The program is really good for getting these kids integrated into the “system” at her college because they have lots of faculty interaction and mentoring across disciplines, have lab everyday, Chem 1 prep 3 nights a week, and NO HOMEWORK so there is plenty of time to explore and form relationships with the other 18 kids in the program. She also access to the other freshman coming to campus for different programs. It is almost an ideal situation and she loves it.

When I consider D’s final top two colleges I am certain that she chose the school that is the best fit for her - everything else being equal (well, not exactly equal from a rankings perspecitve but close enough)

I am a newcomer - but I also miss the frequency of posts and rarely come here because it almost seems pointless…(hope I am not violating any CC rules here with this statement).

I just planned out a 2-week road trip plan. The main purpose is taking D to RIT. She really wants to visit relatives a long the way, so we are doing at least an extra full day’s driving (split up over 2-3 days) to fit everything in. All of my relatives think I’m crazy. We live several states away from these relatives (and RIT), so we don’t get to see them often. Once we arrive, we will be staying with a relative about an hour away from campus during all of the orientation events that will happen over a 5-day span. D will be on campus from day 1 of that, but we will travel to campus for move-in and honors orientation and then return a few days later for the regular orientation. Now that I’m typing it out for complete strangers, it does seem a bit crazy.
And - as if that isn’t enough, I’m trying to schedule a couple visits for D15 (funny, that’s her age and her graduation year - so whichever way you use that, it works).

We finally received the amount for the last scholarship D received. It wasn’t as much as we hoped, but we’ll take every bit we can get. D has been earning some money this summer video editing and teaching a filmmaking class for teens.

Classes begin 2 months from tomorrow!!!
