Parents of the HS Class of 2013

Congrats to mamabear!

I have to laugh at the online dating analogy. so true! D is letting the college do the roommate selection - seems like quite a few at her college still do it that way - and she says that she filled out the “e-harmony roommate survey” and is waiting for the match! She won’t hear for several more weeks though.

Orientation and registration - both happen right before classes begin, at the end of the summer.

Dorm shopping - we’ve done very little… I bought clothes hangers! lol!

Ds starts work next week, so this week is all about the deep clean of the room. After three days, he’s almost done.

D’s graduation was last night at 7PM. Her flight was due to depart at 1:30PM - cutting a little close but she had stuff to do in her research lab in the morning. At 4:00 the airline still had not estimated departure time. Argh. So I was on pins and needles until they finally lifted off at 4:30. She arrived at the airport in enough time to make it to graduation by 6:45. I am just glad she was able to get here since there were thunderstorms and flood warnings. Ceremony was lovely and she walked away with her actual diploma.

Dropped her off this morning for a 7AM flight to head back to school for six weeks.

Edit: Principal announced that this class scored higher in the ACT than any other class at any other school in the history of our state!

Wow that is a whirlwind trip Kennedy - I hope she was glad that she could make it back!

YouDOnt say - hmmmmmm…deep cleaning a room - seems like a pretty good idea but could become emotional!

D2 had to fill out a roommate questionnaire when she registered for housing. Seemed pretty in depth. It asked if you wanted to room with anyone (D didn’t know anyone so she said no) and the following question asked if location was more important or the person was more important. She could have gone “roommate shopping” but figured she’d leave it up to the school to pick.

Good morning! Happy Tuesday! Two more days until graduation. Today is his last official day of school. I am not sure what is on the schedule tomorrow but Thursday morning they have a Senior Brunch.

Ahs: School supplies I think become personal in college. I know S2 usually gets either a spiral for every class or a large spiral with dividers for his classes. You might just get the basics (pens, etc…) and then let them pick up what they need either at the student store or whatever). Mac vs. PC. I use PCs at work and we have all Macs at home. If anything the Mac is easier, I don’t think she will have any problem switching. Often the school’s have a deal on computers. I remember getting D1 a Macbook at orientation and it came with a printer and maybe an iPod or an iTouch. Apple usually has a special in the summer for college students.

YDS: I am incredibly jealous of the deep-cleaning of the room. I had hoped that would get done to make room for S2’s return from college, but it did not. Since S3 starts work the day after graduation I fear I will end up doing it in August after he leaves.

I read someone asking about school supplies and computers. We asked the college. Apparently some department require Mac and some require PC. Glad I asked cause I had seriously considered having my daughter go Mac, but College of Business wants PC.

My D filled out the questionnaire. Her school has a 2017 Facebook group. She spends some time on it but she is just going to get a random roommate assignment. She won’t know until July 17 and we are holding off on some of the dorm shopping until after she can discuss with her suite mates. There are 4 girls in 2 bdrms with a living room and bathroom in their suite - well, that’s if she gets her first choice of dorms !

Make sure you comparison shop those college computer deals. Yesterday I spot checked a few of the “discounted” models offered by D’s university and Best Buy had the same models with more memory for lower prices!

Same with D1. I thought she could have increased her chance of things working out by doing the FB thing, but she “didn’t want to be judged.” It is hard, I guess.

long-time reader of this site.
College 4K: you might want to ask the school’s technology store if they will have a “back to school” special. My daughter’s school will be having one next month. Even without the sale, the Apple Mac is $250 cheaper than the store. Also the Apple store will take $100 off if you bring in documentation that your child is attending college.

D’s school also has “no sales tax days” in early August - which translates into significant savings.

Good morning!!! Graduation day (finally!!). It isn’t until 6pm but I had trouble sleeping last night. How can it be that my sweet baby and last kid is graduating high school??? Of course DH and S2 are complaining that graduation is at the same time as the 7th game.

I’m with your dh and ds2! Congrats, tx5!

S2 picked his dorm room today. By the time he woke up, there were only 4 beds still available (only one floor for freshman boys), so he picked the room farthest from the stairs. He got to see the profile of the kid in the other bed, and he looked “suitable”, ie. not too enthusiastic or studious. I hope they make contact by facebook or something before school starts, but S2 is not really “into” communication. Oh well, he’s on his own now.

on there own…wow…that is a concept I am still trying to get my head around!!!

their, I mean…I am soooo tired tonight!!

Hey 'rents!

Happpy…well, Friday, now!

It’s so exciting to read about your kids graduating and preparing to go to college. I graduate next Thursday and I’m so excited! Today (yesterday) was my last day of classes and our scholarship ceremony was tonight. I was presented with a big scholarship and started crying on stage in front of everyone. After all is said and done, I won many private scholarships that total to be over $11,000! I will have to take out $4,500 for my first year of college! That’s absolutely awesome news! I’m so elated, I can’t really describe my emotions at this time.

Today was so bittersweet but I’m ready to move on! One week until graduation. I can do this!

Good morning! DS graduated last night! It was a nice ceremony and only 43 minutes!! DS gave a speech and it was well received. Shortly after graduation they all hopped on a bus for Grad Nite at Disneyland. He returned at 4AM and was up at 7:30 AM for his first day of work. Tonight we are invited to 2 graduation parties and tomorrow we are having a party. Luckily they rearranged the schedule and he has tomorrow off of work.

Congratulations on all the great news Swizzle!!

I’ve been avoiding this thread b/c I have been utterly emotional and overwhelmed. I am popping back up to tell SWIZZLE how proud I am.

SWIZZLE you have been a great contributor to this thread. I appreciated a students perspective. I only hope my younger kids handle this process and seek out funds as much as you have done.
