Parents of the HS Class of 2013

I find it interesting how different all the procedures are by college. S orientation is just a few days before class starts but he has friends who have orientation now or next month, which sounds like a logistical pain to have to get to the school twice over the summer.

He won’t find out room assignments until July and classes right before school.

He just got in the mail his summer reading and assignment. I think he was hoping to escape summer assignments :)

I think my kid will be really disappointed if she hears she has summer assignments—just doing the placement tests is enough to get her “annoyed”!
It really would be nice to let these kids really REST!

Ds is taking his math placement test tomorrow…because he can’t wait to find out if he got a “4” on his AP Calc…The Calc 1 class is filling up fast and he also needs to get in a mech engnr class which requires a “4” on AP calc. So if he gets 9% or higher on the test tomorrow he can enroll. If he gets a “3” on AP Chem he gets out of Chem 1210 but not the lab. Tell me why they wait so long to release those scores?

Graduation is done! D had to write a letter describing herself and her interests, which was submitted at the deadline Saturday. It is to help the school pick her advisor. She has one summer reading book, as well as some online placement tests. We don’t know when she will hear about housing or roommate. Orientation and class registration not until end of August. Son flew off to his study abroad in Japan, so things are quieting down here.

AP exams are graded by people, rather than machines, and since they are only offered once a year, there is no full-time staff of graders. Instead, they hire HS teachers and college instructors to work for a couple of weeks to process them all. Since most schools don’t let out before Memorial Day, I believe all the grading is actually done in mid-June. Hence the delay.

It could be worse. The New York state bar exam is administered in July, but the results aren’t posted until November (and that’s a month earlier than when I took it back in the Dark Ages).

No college stuff going on here. S2’s school had placement exams in May and orientation in June - but he’s not going to either. They will have “makeup” orientation a couple days before school starts. He gets to pick his room/roommate on Thursday, but so far none of the potential roommates have met his criteria (?). It’s kind of funny to read the roommate descriptions online. Remember this is a very small conservatory (only voice, piano or organ majors) - lots of enthusiastic male fans of Glee and Broadway musicals! I think the poor girls are going to have a very small dating pool (lol). Don’t really know what S2 is looking for in a roommate, but I think blatant enthusiasm is out, as are “serious” students. I think he’ll just end up with “whoever”.

I assumed the slowdown was due to everyone moving to the FB page.

Ds has been on the school’s roomie selection process for almost a week now but so far no love match. It’s kind of weird … writing to someone and then all of a sudden they quit responding. Did you say something that turned them off? Are they out of town and never got your last msg? You can tell who has and hasn’t been paired off already, and most of the people with whom he’s corresponded haven’t picked a roomie. meg, I can see the beauty of “whoever.”

S2 calls it “online dating.”

maybe random assignments of roomates are not such a bad idea…

YDS–I don’t have FB…I feel left out… :(

I’m not on the FB page, so I’m just guessing, drmom.

meg, ds’s school calls it gHarmony. :)

D has graduation tonight. She is flying in this afternoon arriving around 3:30 - cutting it kind of close. I dropped her off last week and my flight was scheduled to leave coming back home at 5:20PM. Due to severe weather in the entire midwest I did not land at the airport until 4AM!! I have spent the last week recovering. Just hoping that everything goes smoothly today and she gets in to attend her graduation.

So far - she loves her new school and the summer research program. She is in a suite with 3 double bedrooms and 2 baths. Her roommate is great - and the other suite mates seem OK too. Unfortunatly, she will have to give up her summer roommate in August when Fall term begins. I just hope she is as lucky again.

It was actually my first time visiting the campus when I dropped her off - and I can see why she fell in love with it. There was a welcome dinner the first night we arrived where we met several other students, parents and faculty. Now I can breathe a sigh of relief.

I can totally understand the angst of “roommate dating/selection”. My DD “found” her roommate on the Facebook class of 2017 page for her university. She “talked” with her for about 2 days and then was nervous about “popping the question” but she did and the girl said “yes”. I think once they start talking with a potential roommate you need to make a decision within about 48 hours or kids move on. I know my dd’s roommate was also talking with one of DD’s high school friends - and DD and her roommate moved quicker than her HS friend. It will all work out in the end.

The school advises against popping the question to someone in the first week, and yet you can see people have not waited. Personally, I’d rather just pick someone and be done with it. Or opt out of be system altogether and let the college do it.

Good morning! Just a reminder that our “friend” AP Trevor is tweeting again about the AP test results. From what I understand is that the way they are graded is that all the graders are flown out to wherever it is they do the grading and the grading is done over a weekend.

Roommates: S2 arrived home from college on Saturday (he just finished junior year). We were discussing freshmen roommates and such. He lived in a triple freshmen year with random roommates. He then picked his roommates sophomore year and they moved out together into an apartment for junior and senior year. He isn’t living with either of his freshmen roommates, but he says he has an incredibly strong bond with one of them and he thinks it is because they “survived” together the third roommate. I thoguht that was kind of an interesting take on the situation.

S’s school just randomly assigned roommates. You get what you get. Luckily, he and his roommate get along great. They also roomed together for Soph year, and are moving off campus now for senior year.

D’s school had her complete a survey and then uses that information to try and “match”. She will receive her roommate assignment in early August.

I have a question for those of you with older kids or just “in the know”. My dd was talking with some friends the other day about “college school supplies”. Obviously it would make sense to buy notebooks or binders before arriving on campus but none of them knew what they should get. She wasn’t told in High school what to use so I am not sure why she just can’t get what she is comfortable with but this seem to be a big topic of discussion. Any ideas?

Also - are your kids more MAC or PC kids? We promised to buy dd a new computer as a graduation gift - she has always used a PC but now is thinking about a MAC. I just don’t want her to get frustrated when she doesn’t know how to do something on the MAC.

If anything, Macs are easier to use. But I recommend you wait until late July at least, because there might be updates. The Air was updated last week though.

My D let the school pick her roommate and it seems to be a good pick so far. They are both in the NW and going to school in the East so they’ll get to explore the area together. Keeping my fingers crossed that once they are stuck in a room together for a few weeks they’ll still like each other.

@ahsmuoh - My older D just takes basic school supplies (notebooks, paper, pens, etc.) and then picks up anything else she needs at school. A lot of things are submitted electronically so the paper and pens are for notes only.

Yay!!! It’s over (sort of). Son’s graduation was tonight but they pick up their diplomas tomorrow. I only got teary eyed a couple of times, and for the oddest reasons, but did not need a tissue. They showed slides of each grad’s freshman pic followed by their senior pic while we were waiting for the ceremony to start. They had an additional video montage to We Are Young right before they started calling the names. That one got my eyes moist. They had a pretty inspirational, imo, commencement address from a professor at a local university who is currently doing research in robotics and music. Very cool and my son actually listened. The recessional song was Can’t Hold Us by Macklemore. Classic :)

Congrats reeinaz! DD’s graduation is thursday.
I feel like we all just started this journey, and now we have high school graduates!
