I can relate to the ‘senioritis’ affliction that can take over a once productive child. As a senior in NY, my son only had 1 regents exam to take, which left him rather unstructured (lazy) for several weeks. I was happy when he began working. He does a 40+ work week and I have found him tying up loose ends with college stuff. I think when they have a break, they simply decompress. And, they are still maturing. I certainly have stepped in with much of the college stuff. The past few weeks have been a whirlwind for us with grad stuff, his 18th birthday, and car buying. (Car buying was brutal.)

We leave tonight for orientation.

Hey Greekmana: did I tell you my older son is doing a Travel Study in Greece? He leaves July 7th. Any words of wisdom?

MegPmom - Fantastic that the house sold so quick! I live <30 minutes from Westminster. PM me if your son needs any hands on help.

DS is boarding plane to Iceland. His first trip out of the country.

It also marks trip 3 of 5 for the summer that I needed to shop for. College shopping has me overwhelmed. DS’ laptop came in today. Waiting to play with it until tomorrow night.

Up bright and early for orientation.

Good luck with orientation, tx5

S’13 laptop arrived a couple of days ago as well. I think he’s logged some hours setting it up. The most excited member of the family is S’18 who gets S’13s “old” laptop (really only a couple of years old).

Where are you guys buying the new laptops? D is getting a new MacBook Pro for college but we don’t even know where to start looking for the best deals. She went to the Apple Store just to look at the laptops and talk to the sales staff. But where next? Best Buy?

Hey 'rents!

I graduated from high school last night! It was such a great experience-so was high school-but I’m excited to move on! We have an all night graduation party and I won a vacuum cleaner as well as a printer, so I’m reallllllly freaking happy (and so is my dad…hahahahaha)

I can’t believe it’s all over! It’s been one heck of a run, but now I’m on to bigger and better things. I’m so happy. I just thought I’d stop in and share it with all of you.

coralbrook - all the prices of Macs are the same wherever you go - if you go to the Apple store, you can get the education discount…you just need to bring proof that your kid is going there. Also, check the website of the school your kid is going to - you may want to consider buying it through the school with their discount.

One more thing - I HIGHLY recommend CSI College Student Insurance - it covers just about everything - drop your phone, covered, phone gets wet, covered, lost laptop, covered, cracked screen, covered, theft, covered. It runs about $125 for the year…it has saved us for the last two years.

Congrats, swizzle!!!

Dh ordered ds’s laptop last night.

Ds was accepted into a selective pre-orientation program so is super-amped about that. I’ve GOT to start making flight arrangements.

coralbrook -

MACS are not the same where ever you go if you need more than just the laptop. There are some bundled deals on college campuses. Check the website for your students college book store.

with PC, I also start with Tiger Direct first as a base line price.

I actually bought DS from Amazon. Amazon was running specials on i3 and i5 for various brands. $100 off most. Extra fee for Square Trade Warranty. IMHO Square Trade is the easiest to deal with for repairs/issues. You can buy a warranty directly from Square Trade, but Amazon gives a slight discount when coupled with a product from Amazon. Also, your student can sign up for prime membership for free.

I personally have never gotten a good deal at Best Buy.

HSN runs deals a few times a year that are really good bundles with 3 year warranty, etc.
BJs at our local store, was dumping all the Windows 7 laptops

Swizzle - Nice luck on winning that great stuff. Sounds like an awesome high school if you get door prizes!

EDIT - AMAZON & LAPTOPS Check the “USED GEAR” prices too. Amazon sells new with damaged box under the used stuff. Usually $25-$50 off. Still an unused/ not refurb. Just box damage.

I haven’t been on this thread in more than a month. I got to a point where I was so glad a decision was made that I needed some time away from this to clear my mind.

We also had prom, dance recital, commencement, and grad parties to occupy our minds. Did anyone else go through this, or is it just me?

Congrats Swizzle and good luck next year.

And congrats to your son Youdon’tsay

We ordered the computer through the college store. We also paid for their protection plan which covers on-site maintenance, repairs, replacement, etc.

Oh yes FlyMeToTheMoon - I am “Grad partied” out!

Are any of your kids wanting MACs that have never used a MAC. My dd thinks she wants a MAC but she has always worked on a PC and I am afraid she will get frustrated if she doesn’t know how to do something when she working with a deadline in college. She is very type A and likes everything to go “as planned”!

Ahsmuoh - D has always used PC and received MAC as graduation gift. It was “self-evident” from the moment she turned it on how everything works. Same for S when he bought his MAC last year. MACS are super easy to use.

The bill came today. Joy.

flymetothemoon - I have to agree that breaking away for a bit is a good thing.
reeinaz - I took a look at ours online. They haven’t sent the notice yet, but it’s there just the same.

PC to Mac switch: I do not usually like change, but we made the switch to Mac a few years ago. There were a few minor things that bothered me for a while - just because I had to relearn a couple things - but nothing major. I really like it now. Apparently Apple usually runs a back-to-school sale, but for some reason it’s running late this year - or not happening as it usually does.

Packing/Buying stuff for school: A few months ago, I obsessively combined about 3-4 college dorm “what to bring” lists. One of those is a huge one I found here on CC. I personalized it and edited down to 2 pages. Now I’m going through it with H and will go through it with D (as soon as she cares) to see what we’ll be taking with us on our road trip and what we’ll need to buy when we get there. There are probably things we’ll have to buy via internet and send to a near-by relative.

D is finally eligible to take her driver’s test this week (yeah, she wasn’t really that motivated to drive for a long time). I just want to make sure she at least has her license before leaving for school.

Remember when your kids were little and everyone kept telling you to “Enjoy this time, they grow up so fast”? I have to say, I think I took that advice to heart and I have really enjoyed my D. I’m doing my best to continue that this summer, though she makes it so difficult at times.
I’m seriously going to miss that girl. Thank God for email, cell phones, and FaceTime!
