Parents of the HS Class of 2013

D’s college/Apple offered a deal for entering freshman saving me $300 on a new Mac book pro. D’s friends going to different colleges didn’t have any deal.

Been busy lately but wanted to add my dear daughter. Congratulations and good luck to all parents and students!

Just back from vacation and my D received e-mail while we were gone inviting her to be a cast member in a touring Disney on Ice production from late Aug 2013 - Late May 2014. That would mean postponing college for a year and probably forfeiting her theatre scholarship (the college will defer her admission but will not guarantee the scholarship will be held for her). Holy Cow! I’m freaking out. My H and I always supported her choice to audition since if she’s going to do this now is the time–once she stops training and goes to college (with no ice rink) it would be almost impossible to do later.

I guess I just never believed that this would actually happen and that her long ago dream of being a Disney Princess might actually come to pass (actually she will more likely be a spoon or a dwarf or something like that as an ensemble member but whatever).

Wow, that sounds absolutely exciting! But a very hard decision. I do not know which way I would go in advising my D, but I guess my motto is “You only live once!”

Yes, I am trying to talk myself into actually believing that she should go for it (I’m very risk averse personally). We (including my D) are all very aware that living on tour for 9 months will hardly be glamorous but even if it’s a challenging experience, I feel like it will be a tremendous growth experience for her. Will require much quicker transition to adulthood / independence than college but I think she’s up to it!

Congrats Momofzag!

Momofzag: You can consider this as a very exciting “gap year” which would translate into a more mature college student.

Yes, I agree. The only real downside is the loss of the scholarship (and the fact that she already turned down a bigger scholarship at another college that was completely deferrable for a year…ergh).

Is she mature enough to withstand 8 months on tour with a bunch of grizzled veterans? Probably some in the bunch are not the best role models for a young girl.

Coralbrook - Really? Did you just YOLO? lmao My son and I recently had a conversation about his dislike for that slogan because it tends to be the justification for stupid decisions. But I think even he would cosign that one.

Momofzag - what an amazing opportunity for your daughter. She can’t go wrong with either decision. But yeah, YOLO!!

Good morning!

So we survived orientation and actually had a great time! S3 signed up for classes and I made some friends with the other parents. We learned how to get from the airport to school, etc…

Momofzag: Sounds like a great adventure. I have a friend whose daughter was set to go to Chapman, but tried out for a job in a Disneyland parade and got offered a job working on a Disney cruise ship. She decided to go for it and is having a great time and I think is on her second year. Mom has gotten to go on some cruises too!

We are really sweating out here on the west coast!!

Coralbrook: I actually agree that this is a concern. D is very mature, grounded and really has a good sense of who she is/wants to be. But we have heard from someone else who did this that there is an awful lot of hard partying on tour and after 3 years, she said she couldn’t keep up anymore and went back to college. D will be barely 18. I also worry a bit about loneliness for her but I do think she can handle it and she is a person who can entertain herself. There are also issues with eating disorders, etc. due to having to maintain weight, stay fit, etc. I think we will support whichever way she wants to go. I would hate for her to spend her life regretting not doing it and wondering “what if?”

This is another one of those things where it sounds great for someone else’s kid, zag! ;)

Actually, this is sooo different that I think it would be a great opportunity. I have friends whose kids did summer-long activities with older kids and, yeah, there was a lot of drinking. If you think she could do it, then I’d look into deferring acceptance and whether those scholarships really are lost. Or, she could see this as a gap year and reapply! Joy. :D

momofzag - there is more than one path and college is just part of the journey…and not necessarily the best part. Good luck with your D’s decision!

Is there any way to find out if there will be other newly graduated HS kids on the tour? This might help with an educated decision. She may not be comfortable or happy if everyone on tour is in their twenties or older.

Congratulations Zag on the opportunity for your daughter. I know that it is a difficult one. But, my thought is, if she absolutely hates it after a year…she already has a colleghe lined up. About the scholarship, will she be paid for the Disney thing? can some of that go towards a fund to offset the loss of the scholarship?

on my home front: DD was in TEARS…she is still holding out hope to go to one of the WL…and she “hates” the idea of going to the current college…I just kept my mouth shut. I am beginning to wonder if this kid is just worried about going to college in general…and so, holding onto something that is really unlikely just postpones the inevitable…??? am I being to psychological?

I don’t think you’re overthinking it, drmom. This is a tough time for everyone, especially when things didn’t go “just so.” Right now, ds is on Cloud Nine, but I also know he and the gf are avoiding the elephant in the room – will they break up or not? This can be a tough time for kids and parents alike. Is there a drop-dead date after which she’ll know whether she got off the WL?

Here’s a heads up for those of you with kids going to school on the trimester system … It can be hard on them being the last to leave. I remember for ds1, who didn’t report for orientation until after Labor Day, that it was a bummer to feel like you were being left behind. People who reported to school in mid- to late August would post on FB about some exciting thing they were doing and had 38 new friends, while ds was still home, working and waiting to get started on HIS new life. If that’s the case for your kid, you might try to arrange some kind of late-summer vacation or activities …

YDS–two schools asked her to stay on the “selected late” WL (meaning, from what I understand-- if someone cannot pay the tuition or whatever, and suddenly there is a spot available, she’ll be called to attend—one of those schools pretty much said she’d have to “go”…although nothing is in writing like that—BUT, they also said “end of June”…and…well…nothing’s happened…so…it seems to me she’s going to the “deposited” school…but, she is really bummed, and it is affecting her ability to do the pre-registration stuff…she’s doing it…but not really “getting into it”…and I think if she let herself get into it…she’d be much happier…although…this is a kid who is never inwardly super happy…so, it is hard to read!

drmom: my D also has difficulty with transitions - actually more in anticipating them than in actually making the change. This is a really hard time for parents and children. My D has everything pretty much going right and she is still much crankier than usual. It’s scary to leave home no matter how much one wants to do it.

For your D it’s tough letting go of those “dream” schools when they keep stringing her along. Makes it hard to get into the spirit of the deposited school. My D was also waitlisted at 2 schools; I was thankful that she viewed those as essentially a “no” and didn’t stay on the wait lists. Is it possible to set up a deadline in your D’s mind, i.e. July 15 or something, as a drop dead date where you and she leave those wait list schools behind? Did she like the deposited school when she applied?

In terms of saving money to offset the scholarship, the Disney gig is paid but it’s an entry level salary and she has to pay living expenses (i.e. hotel with a max daily cap, food, laundry) out of it. Health insurance and travel are covered but I am guessing that she will be lucky to bank a couple thousand dollars over the 8 months. There is a potential of a bonus at the end and/or a raise in pay if she gets to be an understudy or a feature but I have no idea how difficult that is to do.
