Parents of the HS Class of 2013

momofzag: a deadline is a good idea. I may discuss that with her. the answer is "no–she did not really think she would have to go to any of the three schools she was accepted at—even though I had told her to not apply to any she could not imagine herself attending----it was just a rough year at our high school. BUT, what is funny, is that she had been accepted off one of the WL’s for a school she had earlier thought she loved…and, turned it down over the Deposited school…SOOOO…I am not so sure she doesnt like the deposited school…that is why I am beginning to think it is going away to school in general…no matter how much she tells us she can’t wait to "get out of the home’…it is a rough time. And sad…because I would like her to be excited…you know, she could be excited to be going away in general…even if it isnt the “beloved” school…she’s just not ready, I think…

So many adult decisions to make. I feel for all the parents having to sit by and let their “adult” kid make the decision. H and I are heading to London tonight for a week of house hunting and S2 will be home alone for the first time. We’re not really worried about parties or anything (unless you count a marathon of WoW to be a party) but he has to deal with house showings (contract is still pending) and some contractors estimating more home repairs. I know that he will act responsibly, but you still worry. He has also been asked to sing in a 4th of July concert with our local symphony, so I’m sad that I will miss it. I asked a neighbor to video it for me!

Re: the Disney on Ice tour. Neat opportunity. I can’t wait to hear what she chooses. S2 did a national tour when he was very young (with me in tow). It was grueling, but worth it. Met lots of great folks that we still keep in touch with.

My D is very enthusiastic about leaving home but suddenly thinks she picked the wrong school. She really did not have as many good choices at the end as she had hoped for. But she got very excited when she made her decision in April. Now she is regretting it because she thinks her school is too restrictive, conservative and boring.

I just stay quiet and hope it passes. We’re going to start dorm shopping soon, I’m hoping that will liven her up.

coralbrook—that is what I am thinking my DD is going through. She’s hearing what other kids are doing, or not doing…and second guessing her self! When she finally had the choice between one of the WL schools and the one we deposited at…and she chose the deposited school…we all felt “phew”…she’s had a choice and picked one…now…-----I really just bite my tongue. I think that once she gets her room mate and can begin to plan the dorm…I hope it will be fine!

MomofZag, What an extraordinary opportunity! A couple ballet dancers I knew did that for a couple years and made life long friends. A friend’s son is a gymnast who did an engineering degree and was offered the chance to work as a catcher at Cirque du Soleil. He decided a real job could wait and his family is delighted to go to his shows. If your D has the energy, she could reapply to college and only have more reasons to be accepted and offered merit!

Drmom. Has your dd gone to orientation. My dd had “buyers remorse” a couple weeks ago and them we went to orientation and she is so excited. Something about getting on a campus and getting a real college schedules gets them really excited. Maybe schedule the orientation as soon as possible.

Ahsmuoh—I only wish there was an early orientation!! hers is basically the week just before classes start…at the end of August! She did not go to the accepted student’s day becasue of some exams she had in school (even though she could have asked teachers to take them a different day!)—I agree with you, I think if she got onto campus and met with her adviser and some kids…but it doesnt look like they do that…!

That’s a bummer drmom - I certaily hope this works out for her. I know we are all nervous for our kids and just want them to be happy!!! Really - that’s all we really want in the end right? (oh and to be self sufficient!)

Well my family decided to lease a new car so now we can drive down to DC for move in! Yay.

Same here, nothing happening until end of August for move in and orientation. She will know dorm and roommate assignments mid-July, so maybe she will get enthused if she gets an outgoing and fun roommate.

Made DS’s move in appointment (Yep! We have to make appointments to try to alleviate the congestion that sometimes backs up all the way off of campus!!) at UF. So the countdown begins to August 17 at 2 PM! So excited for him and so sad for me!! He is our only so our nest will be empty…what to do!?!

one WL “closed” today…sad for DD but maybe it will let her get “angry” and then allow her to focus…on the one that always wanted her!! (not so sure she feels that way now…but, I can only hope!)

cold feet: 2 years ago my niece got into her dream school. She had applied EA and was accepted so didn’t send in any more applications. She started to get cold feet in April when everyone was deciding where to go, and she only had one choice, orientation was right before school started so she did not go to orientation in the summer. By the time she moved in, she was 100 percent certain the school wasn’t for her and that she was going to hate it. She had even started to research where she was going to transfer to. Needless to say the summer was far from pleasant. But within days of moving in and meeting people she was happy as can be and now doesn’t even go home in the summer. So I think the moral of the story is that, even if you got into your #1, having cold feet or being nervous is normal.

So I started looking at flights for Thanksgiving and they are already outrageous! I am trying to figure out what to do. The only flights remotely reasonable are for him to fly in Thursday morning and go back Saturday afternoon.

DS signed up for his schedule at orientation this weekend, since we got back on Saturday I think he has changed it 3 or 4 times. I am not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing.

TX5: thanks for the insight. I do believe, something we all have said from the beginning, that the kids will do fine where they land…it’s the landing…soft, hard…in-th-middle…that is difficult to “watch”…I think that once DD allows herself to engage on the Facebook page etc. she will do fine…!

My son received his official acceptance into Beloit’s TRIO Program and will be attending a summer bridge type thing the week before actual orientation. So, his launch date will be 8/13  He said that he’d rather have me fly out with him for that than come out on 8/19 for orientation. The problem is that the room he will stay in for the program is not the room he’ll live in for the school year. I won’t be able to “help” him set up his room!!! Oh well. I guess that will save me money since there is no point in getting him things that will just stay in the boxes. He sees no point in storage/organization items. The floor works just fine.

Okay: it’s decided! PHEW!! now we can all move on!

I am glad this forum is available so we see that there is a lot of common angst out there. I think some of my D’s “laziness” has to do with some anxiety about her final choice especially as some friends have gone to summer orientation at schools she turned down and they are thrilled. I am sure she is happy for them but it must raise at least a question in her mind whether she has made the right choice. Watching vampire diaries and sleeping a lot annoys me but I think there is an element of of denial/escapism too. When it gets extreme I change the password on Netflix, remove the remotes and issue the ultimatum to make some progress with chores and college prep tasks. It works but the cycle starts again after a day of effort. She does go to work on time and has about 25-30 hours a week but I think that is a form of escapism too.

I wouldn’t expect smooth sailing for all the kids so I think the silent listening while they vent their fears, regrets, angst, etc. is the best we can offer at this point and recognize that some of the anxiety is not going to be released in productive ways. They are only young adults so it is not surprising that much of the behavior is grumpy, lazy, tearful instead of active engagement in preparations with a positive attitude. Hopefully, they also grow up this year and confront similar disappointments and anxieties differently.

All that schvitzing over Bryn Mawr? I hope DD understands how lucky she is to be headed there. I’ve got two boys, but it seems like a great blend of the advantages of a women’s college with access to Haverford AND a great location near an interesting city. What’s not to love?

Tell her to get psyched, have a great first semester, and report back to us with her definitive answer on the eternal question: Pat’s or Geno’s?

SomeOldGuy: I know, I know! I loved Bryn Mawr for her from the start…I think the “all girls” thing is what was getting her…But, she is finding many of her friends have chosen all women’s colleges…so, once she allows herself to “see” herself there, I think she will like it. There is nothing not to love about the school. I think it is great. (but I’ve been saying that from the start)…

Pat’s or Geno’s???
