Parents of the HS Class of 2013

Pat’s and Geno’s are the two most famous Philly cheesesteak emporiums, and both, naturally, claim to have the best cheesesteaks in the world. They’re conveniently located right across the street from each other in South Philly, so if you’re really hungry, you can conduct a direct taste test. All in the name of research, of course.

DrMom-If you are going to send a student off to Philly, you MUST get with the program!!! ;)

BTW, to celebrate our final docking of the USS Indecision, we’re serving up a thick slice of cheese whiz from some Philly guys who are neither Pat nor Geno. Bon appetit!

drmom, my DS is a 2012 Haverford grad and just spent a post-bac year at Bryn Mawr (BMC’s grad programs are coed). The Bi-Co is the most seamless college consortium out there. All my DS’s friends took classes at both campuses, many of the students in his class majored at BMC (it was noted on the HC commencement program), the buses and class schedules are coordinated so that it’s possible to get back and forth for back to back classes, departments are designed to compliment rather than duplicate each others, etc. It’s really like getting two colleges for the price of one, and it makes two very small (wonderful) schools feel bigger when you want them to. For me, BMC seems like a great combination of an all-women’s living environment with coed academic and social ones.
DS spent more time at Wawa than at either Geno’s or Pat’s. But he LOVES Philly and hopes to stay there for the rest of his life.

AHHHH!! You are right, I have no idea about Philly or the food! DD loves food…maybe we have more to inspire her!

Right! I am finally off the lounge chairs and walking around!! Great music SOG!!— now I get it! :)

Wintriest, that is good to know about your Son’s experience. I have read a lot about the coordination (one of the things that made us like it)---- I think the consortium is great, and I have heard that the “daytime” campus is pretty “coed”…so, it probably is the best of both worlds. She is going to have a great time…she just may not know it yet!

We will explore WAWA and Geno’s and Pat’s I am sure!

FYI

"When ordering a cheesesteak, the idea is to let the cashier know a.) that you would like a cheesesteak, b.) what type of cheese you want, and c.) whether or not you want fried onions. And you have to be as concise as possible while doing so.

Locals have become so adept at this practice that they basically have it down to three words: saying “one wiz with” to the person behind the counter means that you would like one cheesesteak [denoted by the “one”] with Cheeze Wiz as your choice of cheese [denoted by the “wiz”] and with fried onions [denoted by the “with”].

Similarly, saying “one provolone without” would secure you a single cheesesteak [one] made with provolone cheese [provolone] and without fried onions [without]."

Okay! I am making a “cheat sheet”…— Hey, can we have a Philly “night” onboard the USS indecision! In fact, we can do a different City’s food “thing” each day! (sorry, I am really getting a bit giddy with the knowledge that in our house, things are finally…FINALIZED!!!)

DrMom, we are so excited for you and your D.

Lots of angst in my house, too.

I think fineartsmajormom’s words were very wise. This is a very big deal for 18-year-old kids, and 8-10 hours watching a marathon of ______________, name of reality series here, is OK with me.

Congrats DrMom! I have been following your posts and I must say you have managed this extended time frame with a lot of grace!! I would have imploded long ago!! Philly is a fabulous place!!

I love this site! I don’t feel “alone” in my “mom-zaniest-moments!” (that goes for the support of both the guys and gals on this site!)---- BUT, I must admit, I think I have a bunch on “inner-implsions” I’ve collected along the way!!

Yup, this 18-year-old “grown-up” (not) thing is for the birds!!! I think they are all back at age 2! remember when they’d walk away…look back…not see you and then CRY!!! it’s like that…only “bigger” toddlers!!

Congratulations to DrMom and D! What a great school! Sorry the decision was so drawn out but the future looks very bright. I’m happy for you both.

Drmom123: aw…I’m picturing all three as just “bigger toddlers” …agree that it is nice that others are having the same half grown up, half melt down days…I’m just listening and keeping my mouth shut unless they ask for advice…as my mom always says “this too shall pass”

Congrats drmom!! Bryn Mawr is in a great location. I doubt she’ll be trekking down to Pats or Genos. ( for the record, Tony Luke’s makes the best cheesesteak!)

But she will be very close to King of Prussia mall! Largest indoor mall on the east coast.

And I agree with the others that the relationship with Haverford makes it more like a coed atmosphere.

but it was easier when they could all fit on your lap!!! and, you could kiss the “boo-boos” away…

Good morning! Happy day before the holiday!!

So last night DS and I were talking about AP scores and I said “you know your number right?”, but unfortunately he could not find the AP test booklet. Somehow in the craziness of the last couple of months, with his trip to DC, graduations (his sister also got her masters), graduation parties, and his college brother moving home, and back into his room, for the summer, it got buried. After tearing apart his room and the house for a couple hours we gave up. This morning I called and they couldn’t have been nicer. So we have the number and we are ready for Sunday. Some of his friends have already found out on their college portals. Berkeley says they don’t post them until next week, but of course that doesn’t stop us from compulsively checking to see if they are posted.

Update on Disney on Ice vs. College decision. Today we got the awesome news from D’s college that they have re-considered their position and will hold both her admission and her scholarship for Fall 2014, so D will be off on a gap year starting in August! Yay! It’s amazing what a personal appeal can accomplish.

What great news! I’m glad they saw the light. They could’ve lost a great kid if they hasn’t compromised. What a great experience for your daughter! Congratulations on a great outcome.

momof zag - awesome news for your D! Hope she has a wonderful, safe gap year :)

Keep us posted on whether she is a ‘spoon’ or ‘broom’ or something in the show. Best of luck!
