drmom: you have me wishing for Pats (we’ve done the get one from each & do a taste test before) but it’s hard to get in TN. For the record my order is usually “one wiz wit onions & mushrooms.”

Laurendog: so glad you had a great trip & that all is going smoothly re: Pitt. And I think it’s adorable that you think the “big 4-0” is old. LOL.

No AP scores popping up in D2’s school portal, but since she can login tomorrow at 5am to find out there’s no angst in waiting.

And yes you can follow things on Twitter without having an account. I do have an account and have never tweeted.

We dorm “pre-shopped” this week. So far the only things purchased are a duvet cover and robe. Have I ever mentioned that D2 is a minimalist & hates shopping?

DD saw some cute things in BedBath&Beyond…but didnt want to get anything until she knows her roomate…but, they were cute…with the coupons, not soo bad…but, I did not purchase. Anyone getting a “trunk” for use in the room? storage??

Happy birthday Laurendog. I guess that means you and my DS13b have the same birthday. I’m guessing that most of us on this list have several years on you if not a decade or more!

I too liked the idea of a trunk, but haven’t heard a decision from the end user. Be aware that when you purchase something from one of those online college dorm supply stores, you usually get a coupon for a subsequent purchase. So if you are buying a lot, don’t buy it all at once. You just have to see if shipping on two orders will make a difference.

Hello everyone! I just got back from our house hunting trip (well, flat hunting) to London. It was like a marathon of House Hunters International. But, in the end, we found a nice 2 BR, 2 BA flat in St. John’s Wood. So, we’ll be downsizing from 2800 sq. ft. to 700 sq. ft.! The shippers come to get our stuff on Wednesday - so I think my next few days are going to be crazy. We arrived home to find that S2 had kept the house spotless as well as handled several contractors who were working on the house. And his 4th of July concert went well - we got to see the video. His only complaint was that living alone was lonely! And he’s my introvert!

WOW megpmom! Congratulations on the Flat! (I don’t know how I’d do it----downsize and move and have my kiddo going to college…) Good to know he was able to do what you asked----and his feeling lonely…not so bad, really…you know he will miss you!

I’m covered under my mom’s plan, but it only provides full coverage in my home state/city, except for emergency which it covers everywhere. My college wants me to pay $2500 for their insurance because they say that students can’t just have emergency coverage.

What are some examples of situations where I would ever need non-emergency coverage? I’m trying to form the basis of an argument for just keeping my insurance.

I guess you might have/develop a condition requiring regular treatment where you reside. That would all be out-of-pocket under your current plan. I take it that the $2500 only provides for that coverage that is excess of your home state plan? That is, it’s not a complete plan, just covers non-emergency stuff that pops up in DC? The issue you might think about there is dealing with two insurers to get stuff paid for–each says the other one should be paying. There might also be two sets of deductibles, etc.

I used to work at a college—they all seem to have the same concerns. An example of need for more insurance (non-emergency) might be if you get the flu or pneumonia and you need to be seen by a doctor after hours (or whatever the school policy is)—or you have to see a specialist for something (diabetes, asthma, unusual medical problem that shows up after you leave home) and get worked-up and treated. They are considered non emergency issues but in order for you to attend school, you have to be under a doctor’s care… some schools do not have all the specialists under their roof—they rely on the doctors in the town…who take the local insurance…otherwise, you may be paying more than that 2500 dollars in medical bills and medications…

During my D’s freshman year, she was referred twice by the campus health clinic for “non-emergency” services. Once her eardrum ruptured due to an ear infection and she saw an ENT. The 2nd time was for chronic pain in her hip and she saw an orthopedist. Our insurance covered both visits (repeat visits with the ENT). I can see why you might want routine health insurance, in addition to emergency.

I went dorm shopping with D yesterday, our first outing. She had a couple of gift cards from Bed, Bath, and Beyond so we went there first. It was actually my first time in the store, and I was rather disappointed - I had expected a wider selection. I’m used to doing most of my shopping online, so I guess my expectations were too high. We bought an over-the-door shoe rack and some towels to use up the gift card, and left. We spent some time today searching online and ordering some things, with better luck. Love free 2-day shipping with Amazon Prime.

She won’t find out who her roommate is until early August, and we want to wait until then before purchasing any big items like a fridge.

I can’t seem to get my D interested in the dorm shopping yet. She seems much more interested in finding her new MacBook Pro which we told her she gets as her graduation gift.

Went to BBB myself to look around and also their website. I think their items are much higher priced than other shopping spots such as Amazon or Target. Have a friend that can get 30% discount, but the foam mattress topper is still more expensive at BBB.

I’ve been saving those BBB 20% off coupons for 3 years. I think BBB is worth it only if you are using the coupons and scanning the items in your hometown and paying/picking them up at the college town. It is so convenient under those circumstances. Also, Coralbrook, your student’s college may have a great deal on MacBook Pros for entering freshmen’s. I saved $300 and got a free case!

Today’s mindless fun: I pre-shopped for D2’s Fall semester books. Figured I’d share here so that those who are new to this can get an idea of how prices vary:
9 books total
School bookstore (new) $816.55
School bookstore (used) $612.35 Bn.com (new) $473.89 ** Bn.com (used) $243.40
Amazon (new) $420.90
Amazon (used) $231.34
Abebooks (used) $231.33
eBay (used) $219.19

**We’re Barnes & Noble members so we get a discount & shipping is free.
You also have to figure in shipping on the used books of around $3-$3.99/book unless you find a vendor that has more than one title on your list. So $27-36 more for shipping on the used.

Does anyone know if you can check whether the student had his AP scores sent to his college? :). S can’t remember if he marked that when he took the tests.

I checked the college portal but don’t see any indication either way.

Surf city when you view the AP scores there is a tab at the top that says something like previous reports or something like that. Click that and it will tell you where your scores were sent.
