What are UFE and CBHP?

Oh, and good luck to the ACTers!

Hello Hello
Typing this from my phone so I’ll keep it brief…Step-D, IN at Pitt!!

Woo hoo! And, congrats to all of the Pitt acceptances! Maybe we’ll see you on move-in day 11 months from now? Who knows?

Right now she stands at 2 applications, 2 very treasured acceptances! Not a bad place to be!

RobD - Have you looked at University of Rochester? I think the quirk factor leans heavily towards geeky/nerdy quirky. But the Eastman School of Music attracts a nice amount of artsy people as well. It has an open curriculum.

University Fellows Experience (most competitive honors program at UA) and Computer Based Honors Program (research based honors program with a programming component; also very competitive.)

MommyDearest - 1/2 day would be speed writing for my kid!
I’m frustrated b/c it looks just like the UAH application question. Why can’t he just use the same response? Oh yeah, b/c he never thought to save it even after I advised him to.

Is DS working on anything now? NOPE. He changed his internship schedule, headed to the shore to see a day long event of local music at the famous Stone Pony.

Time for me to stop fussing over him and move onto my own work. Can’t focus today…

MATH homework? I never heard of such a thing. S’13 would prefer to do a 10 page proof for these apps than write 300 word essay!

Woohoo, LDog’s step-D!!!

Rochester sounds like a place my S’13 would like . . . except for the weather!

S2 must be the king of procrastination. He complains that he has 3 projects to work on today - and yet he’s still playing piano, wants to go for a run, then he’ll need a shower, oh, and we’re leaving at 6pm to go see Warhorse (the one from Broadway, very exciting). So…when will he start on these 3 projects…who knows? I just thought this info would make all of you who have intense, driven overachievers count your blessings.

Yeah Ldog!

YDS - Stay positive and remember the number of college bound students is slowly decreasing. They may be applying to more schools, but the actual number of students is down.

Just to chime in to say, yes, we are sharing all the anxieties listed above! What is the right balance between social life and homework and college essays, what is the balance between reaches and safeties, what is the balance between the common ap essay and the EC paragraph? And yes, next year’s college must be bigger than her high school, and yes, I should give up Diet Coke and sweets, but not gonna happen, I fear.

Anyway, my point is, reading this thread makes it seem as if all that is happening in our house is normal. Thank you, folks.

ree: Rochester=real winter. Which isn’t a plus. Although she has 3 “northern” schools on the list, they’re there in spite of the weather, KWIM?

Forgot to say yay for PITT acceptances! Gotta love those rolling admissions schools.

MommyD: you mean you don’t get to hear complaints every night about math homework? Huh. Although it’s 1000% better than last year.

Longhaul, can’t you go back in and view it? S’13 is saving everything – even if it’s printing screen to a xps file. The essays are in some linux version of word, so they’re all saved. S’13 still hasn’t done the UAH scholarship app . . . that essay is next on the list. Yes, they are very similar questions. At least once he gets one of those essays down, he will have it as a start for 5 other school’s similar essay.

I’m just about to ban a kid from my Sacred Basement. Whining about an essay for a supplement in my space? Get outta here!

Lmao, Walker . . . and during Game of Thrones, no less! (sex scenes are really uncomfortable for my S with me in the room . . . I enjoy watching him squirm. lol)

Longhaul, you made me LOL with the speed-writing comment!

Thanks for the explanation, Rob.

Congrats on the acceptances, lauren! And all the Pitt Crew!

Uh…NO KIDS ALLOWED IN THE BASEMENT…:D

Congrats LDog!!

1st acceptance is in…to DS’s #3 school Utah State University in the beautiful city of Logan!! He’s glad he’s in somewhere but still holding out till Jan. to find out about 1st choice.

terinzak–!!!

Congrats on the Pitt acceptances!!

Today is the day my D planned to do her Common App for CMU. Well, wouldn’t you know today was the day Charter decided to come CUT the cable running to our house!!! Why, you ask? I have no idea and neither does Charter!!! So, we finally get it fixed, only it isn’t because the internet is moving at turtle speed. They are coming back out tomorrow afternoon to work on it again.

Did someone mention alcohol? ;)

Congrats on the acceptances and good luck on the honors apps and scholarship apps! No movement here, but homework is done and I can hope that something will get done tonight after sports. Maybe.

D’s list is ok in terms of reach, match, safety. I think. Problem is that the reaches are among her favorites (of course) and the ones with the least prospects for good aid (of course.)

Swizzle, my D is 17 essays too, and it’s pretty daunting, but I think you are approaching it all well. Hang in there and keep plugging away, and when your acceptances roll in, it will all be worth it.

I’m feeling much better - D13 finally has a list with some exciting choices that we can potentially afford - 3 outside the U.S., 3 state flagships with merit scholarships, 1 NYC merit scholarship program and 2 LACs with competitive merit scholarships. This includes 3 Flagship Chinese programs and 3 overseas Chinese programs and 2 more schools that have “good enough” Chinese. Finding schools that offered serious Chinese language instruction and international studies and/or environmental policy was not easy. I have Fiske memorized and I think I’m ready for a second career as a college counselor.
