Parents of the HS Class of 2013

It asks you at the end of the first one do you need to do one for another child? or something like that. I think it was a new feature added last year or the year before.

S took the SAT this past weekend to confirm his PSAT scores for NMSF. He thought the reading was easy and the math was more difficult. Had his 2nd OV at his #1 recently– no change in his ranking of schools. Coaches all had good things to say about him and he liked the team and the facilities. He has one more OV left. He has completed the CA and has made good progress on scholarship applications and supplemental apps. Hopefully we will be able to reach a decision soon.

Hello all! So excited to hear about all the acceptances already. Congrats to all! Getting very frustrated here. Am I the only one who thinks Naviance is a pain!? DS asked for LORs and transcripts way back in August and apparently everything must be released together…transcript, teacher LOR, counselor LOR. Of course, that means nothing has been done. So frustrating and can not tell who hasn’t done their part. Schools are asking for the missing pieces of my DS application since we have turned in the CA and most of the supplements. Thank you for listening to my rant! It is completed for now! [;

I am glad we don’t have this naviance monstrousity I keep hearing about.

southerncalimom–that is a school policy, not a Naviance policy. Our school only sends transcripts and the GC/school report via Naviance and the Common App. They require the kids to snail mail the LOR’s. DD’s GC recommendations and school reports got sent in mid-Sept, her transcripts on Oct 1st.

crommette–actually Naviance is pretty nice to have. It tracks what is sent, what isn’t, and best yet, has deadlines for applications, etc. It’s only as good as your school uses it though.

FYI, if you are looking for more acceptances in the mail today, it’s Columbus Day and no mail delivery…(remembering after 3 trips to the mailbox this morning) :D.

Naviance is quite customizable. The problem isn’t Naviance; the problem is who is in charge of it. ;)

Cross-posted w/Steve.

Southerncalimom - is that how Naviance is set up or is that how the school chooses to do it? Not all CA schools require a teacher LOR. It’s a shame if those get held up waiting for something that isn’t needed.

Xposted with SteveMA and YDS :)

SteveMA & YDS,

Ahhh, I see. :)

I guess if it’s managed well and especially if you’ve applied to many schools it could be good. I just keep hearing people complain about it…and GC’s…and the CA…and DSs and DDs that were supposed to do something and didn’t. Ok, maybe Naviance is just another thing - maybe it’s not so bad. ;)

Our application process with D3 WAS pretty simplified this year. gloating only slightly - because now starts the scholarship app. process

Yeah, cromette, you’re one and done. Lucky!!! Ds still hasn’t finished the app for the honors college. Thankfully, the deadline isn’t until December.

YDS - So you guys are considering honors? We are still trying to decide.

What makes you hesitate?

How long after you submit applications do you get confirmation from the schools. Son submitted several common ap schools on 9/30, he received confirmation from common ap that they where sent, but is still getting e-mails from the schools encouraging him to apply.

We are still waiting for transcripts and letters of recommendations from the school. Our school won’t even let you request anything until the beginning of Oct. We pay $4 per transcript, have to mail them ourselves and they mistakenly thought we requested Northwestern when it was Northeastern. We have naviance, but can’t make requests through it and only guidance recommendation are submitted on-line. Everything else has to be mailed by the student or parent.

Mom24 - the first app, never - S’13 contacted them. The second app, the next day. He’s still getting emails to apply to both schools - I think he’s on those lists until the end of the year!

Steve - lol about the mail!

So which colleges are stalking your kids these days? The stuff from Frank Olin and Hofstra is getting a little over the top. Chicago slowed down. Rochester has sent more big glossies than any other.

FYI about sending SAT scores. It takes longer than you think. Don’t wait until the last minute! I requested scores to be sent on 9/23. The college board system shows that they sent them on 9/28. So there was a delay of 5 days before anything even happened!

It’s been a couple of months since I’ve been on the forum but kept sneaking peaks at the email updates during work breaks. Nice to see some fellow Greek-American mothers out there  And wherenext, you got me hooked back again with the talk of UCAS - we hit Submit for Cambridge last week (the school then forwards on with the reco and grades) but I can’t seem to get darling son to think about the supplementary application that’s due in a couple of weeks, nor the other four universities he needs to add over the next few weeks. I have to say, though, reading through the posts these past weeks, I felt so relieved that the UK system is as simple as it is - one personal statement, one online app…although we also struggled with the overly academic focus. Yes, maybe the States goes the other extreme in wanting to see “superkids” with millions of ECs but there must be a happy medium, no? What happened to the concept of well-rounded, well-balanced kids? I guess that went out the window years ago…

I have a question. For schools that have ED I and ED II. Is there an advantage to ED I over ED II? Does that depend on the school? We were at an open house where the Admissions Counselor stated “all the LAC’s” will give advantage to ED “they just don’t all admit it”. But does that mean (if true) that it is for both ED I and ED II? Anyone have information or experience on that?
also, when the date for application due…is that also when they need the SAT’s/ACT’s? OR do they allow a lag?

EDII often is used by people who didn’t get into their ED choice.

Drmom - I’m sure how much of a boost depends on the school. But when you think about it, EDII usually allows a student to see if they were accepted to their “true #1” first. So I’d think generally, EDI provides a bigger boost than EDII. In fact, my son received a communication from a school that specifically encouraged him to apply EDI, not simply to apply ED (they offer both EDI and EDII).

The schools I’m familiar with say that the application materials must be postmarked by 11/15. So I’m guessing as long as scores are requested by then, it’s ok.

so, if the only think that is not available right on the dot of the application deadline is the sole SAT II score from November 6th…what would you do, apply EDI or wait for ED II? Or, would it be “okay” to ask the rep?

drmom123- I would definitely ask the admissions rep if you can use a 11/6 score for ED1. You will still get a good bump if you submit ED2. With ED1 and ED2 you are committed to going to that school if accepted, and that is what they care about, and that is what gives you the bump. We know a number of kids who did well going through ED2 last year. Not all of them used it as a back up - some just weren’t ready to make up their mind in time for the ED 1 date.
