Parents of the HS Class of 2013

YDS-- SOOOOoooooo jealous!!!

Congrats YDS! Now the wait!

Kat, my D’s first choice is a need aware school and I worried how much our substantial financial need would affect her admittance. But like others said, I had to just let the chips fall where they may. I knew that we’d need the aid, and if it was one of the factors at play, then so be it. If she didn’t get the aid, she couldn’t go anyway.
Thankfully, she was accepted, and the financial aid came through.
So, I’d say send it in now rather than waiting. Good luck.

Kat–the other part of this is if he gets into the need aware school and you can’t afford to send him, does it really matter if he got in? Sure, knowing he got into his #1 is great but without the funds to attend, he can’t go anyway. Our DD had to turn down her #1 because they didn’t come through with the money. It was a sad day for her but she is fine with the school she chose.

Look on the common data set for that school and see what they give out for aid and to how many students and that will give you some indication of just how “need aware” they really are. Could you afford to be a full pay family before the job loss?

Congrats YDS! D2 hasn’t even called yet to say when she’s going to start wending her way home. Never thought this would be the kid that would give me the application completion heart attack!

Walker or others – I came in on this thread when you were working your way through a prescribed set of countdown-to-EA drinks. Is there an established Rx for the days from now to January 1st?

Anouilh, I haven’t seen a prescribed list but my thought is, as much of your favorite beverage as possible!

Gotta go sneak something into my coffee.

I think I want some of those specially enhanced cookies and brownies from Colorado. Hook me up… We have a couple of prescreens due on January 1. Hopefully we will get those done TODAY!!

10 days to go and my son is as cool as a cucumber while I’m a nervous wreck! Here’s hoping that the school releases admissions early…

HMFR supplement 1 of 6 submitted. And it was the easiest one too, just 1 optional essay… Haven’t finished revising my commonapp either. Today hopefully I’ll get another supplement submitted and most/all of the commonapps submitted (I know you aren’t supposed to, but I’m customizing it for every school to fit with their supplement essays lol). Thankfully, I have recently discovered that my dad is a wizard at essay writing so I’m not super worried about meeting the deadlines.

anouilh, walker and terinzak, good luck on apps and prescreens! I’ve got my fingers crossed for you all!

DD just remembered that she’s got “Grad Transitions” that she should complete over the holidays. She’s got to put together a multi page booklet of her plans for post grad as well as showing that she’s completed all the non academic requirements. Just when she thought she had some spare time! She’s also got to think about the requirements for a local scholarship that she’d like to apply for. She’ll have to keep a journal for part of the last semester for a class project - at least next semester is lighter!

I can’t believe how well I slept last night. Obviously, I was trying to play it cool in my waking hours, but my subconscious knew I was stressed. Now, about those scholarship apps …

S submitted one of the easier supplements…3 to go (hard, harder, and hardest.) He’s booked the next three days, so I’m sure he’ll be at it right up til jan 1 11:59 PM. One school won’t accept payment until the supplement is done, so he better bust a move on that one!

Boverine…no need to bet your green squares…I agree. I did misunderstand your post as the discussion had been about AMT to that point.

MommyDearest, I am with you. D has one due Jan. 1 and the last one due the 15th, and she has not looked at either of them since break began. I. Don’t. Understand.
So, I guess tomorrow morning will feature me corralling her and forcing the applications to get finished.
I keep thinking, “Oh God… this is my motivated child!” I can only imagine the fun ahead with the boys…

I feel for all of you that are still doing applications! My dd has two scholarship apps to do in the next couple weeks but is finished with apps. She just wants to know where she is going - the waiting really sucks! I believe she has taken another school off of her list - I think because she doesn’t want to do the scholarship app - she already got a nice scholarship but was invited to apply to a full ride - problem is - it is 3 essays and they only give 4 of them!!! I can’t say I blame her.

My dh is in charge of the FAFSA- now to convince him to get it done sooner than later.

Thank goodness my s15 will probably be an athletic recruit and the waiting will not be as long!

When all is said and done, we need to give out the app tallies. Ds applied to an, I think, very reasonable eight.

ahsmuoh–that athletic thing is nice but not all athletes know any earlier than the normal notification date so just be prepared for that. I’m kind of wishing DS applied EA to his HMFR so we could just be done with the whole thing though :D. He has a boatload of scholarship forms and whatnot to fill out and has done NONE of them…

Steve - I know - my dd13’s bff has already signed and knows where she is going but her bf has decided to wait until the April signing. So he too is waiting - but he had 4 offers - turned down 2 and is deciding between those 2. I know this is not easy for ANYONE - we had a friend who’s son signed as an athlete for an ivy and she was telling everyone how terribly difficult it was for him - I think she forgot that it is stressful for all seniors!

One thing on the athlete side–the hardest thing for DD was calling the coaches she was turning down. She had a great relationship with many of the coaches and it was very difficult for her to tell them no. I’m still mourning the loss of her not going to the school I thought was the best fit for her :D.

On applications: DS had 10 on the list. She submitted 9 apps and heard from her #1 before filing the 10th. She heard from 5 (accepted to all 5). Withdrew the others.

Sent from my DROID2 GLOBAL using CC

So happy to know that others are out there nonchalantly taking their time as the clock ticks away and the parents are loosing sleep over it! It’s easy to think that we are the only last minute family and worry whether or not it will all get done before Jan. 1! I think at last count DS13a has 1.5 apps to finish and DS13b has 4!!! Luckily one of the four is a Jan. 15 deadline. I am making them work on the one app where the supplement has to be submitted before we can even pay because I’m freaked out about the whole thing of 2-3 days for the credit card to process before the application is technically complete! We already paid for all rest, just working on supplements-- and yes it’s all the really hard ones that they saved for last!

On another note today is my birthday and I got a happy birthday email from CC! :)
