Parents of the HS Class of 2014

Hi all,

After a two year hiatus, I am back on these boards with my D2s college apps.
two weeks since CA opened and we dont have an essay yet :frowning:
This from a child/young adult who loves to write.
What has made this more difficult is that we are in India and are following a different school system. We started school in June and she is busy with tests, assignments, projects, what have you…
We will close this week with a long weekend - hopefully will have finished the single CA essay by then.

thanks for reading…

anu

anu – welcome back – not to worry, there are many kids (including mine) who haven’t touched the essay yet.

calla1 – thanks for the sympathy for S’s friend’s mom. I am truly hoping for a miracle.

barnardmom – good luck with the “prep”. Makes college apps seem like a day at the beach.

Son told me last night that he pared down his list to five schools. We still have three visits this fall, so maybe another will be added. Maybe. I have a sneaky suspicion he dropped some schools because he doesnt want to write the essays.

haha spritle…
That sounds like my husband. Back in the day he decided to not apply to Cornell because of the essays. Applied to his college because it only required name/address and signature…and was all transcript/SAT driven.
My point-- it all worked out great.

On the essays here… my K2 has only worked a bit on one…and the supplements for two schools isn’t up on the CA yet…grrrr
School starts next week and I have been pushing K2 to have a good bit done beforehand.

Back when K1 applied, I thought the CA had more than one essay…K1 is a rising Jr. Has the CA dropped an essay? Maybe it was all of the supplements, idk.

Momreads: I know exactly how you feel! Senior year is so busy. I feel that we are off to a good start in that DS already have his senior portrait taken for the yearbook and the CA essay complete. There is a lot more to do - and plenty of time to do it - but all the weekends get taken up by EC’s, science projects, dances, etc. We just wanted to get a start on it before the school year started. Now that school has started, I am driving DS’ s siblings to a lot of events. He drives himself mostly, so that helps.

Welcome back Apply2school!

Hello all. I am just joining this thread. I have been lurking on these boards for quite some time but had never seen this particular thread. I have to go back and read some old posts but I just wanted to join in. We have done lots of visits and we were just about to get the number of applications down to a manageable number when he threw a monkey wrench into it by deciding that he is leaning more toward a Biomedical Engineering degree. Since many of the schools at the top of his list don’t have a BME undergraduate degree, this means tossing them out of consideration and doing more research!

In a way, that definitely reduces the number of applications but unfortunately, it also eliminates most of our financial safety schools. Time is running out since school starts next week and once he starts, he won’t have time to breathe between AP and Honors classes, rehearsals for the school play, community service hours, and his new-found social life!
I’m already stressed out and of course he is taking everything very calmly (as usual).

Where we are at: He started his CA and has a draft of the essay which he wants to get a couple of his teachers to look at. We are going to be applying to every scholarship available because even though he has a pretty good shot at getting in to most of his schools, we won’t be able to afford it without at least a full tuition scholarship!

Welcome, jrmama and good luck! Any ideas for the BME schools? Does he have a region or school size in mind?

He is looking at Southern region mostly. Mid-sized school. Vanderbilt is at the top of his list but I just don’t know if they are going to come through with enough money.

Welcome jrmama! Be careful how many schools he eliminates. It is not uncommon for students to switch majors. Keep at least one financial safety on there.

jrmama, don’t necessarily rule out a school that doesn’t have a BME degree. Many ChE and ME and even ECE departments have professors whose research has a biomed focus, and by taking the right course selection allow students to easily transition to biomed for their first job or their masters degree.

Another lurker joining the party! DS is a violist at a performing arts school who also dabbles in techno music, poetry, electric bass, musical theatre and photography. High test scores, average GPA, possible ADD (if there is such a thing, don’t get me started!). He would like to study music recording and his top choice is Middle Tennessee State, which would be in-state tuition for us through the Academic Common Market. We have the “College Application Process Workshop” at his school tonight, so off we go!

DS’14 hit the “submit” button on his first application (state flagship - not a Common App school)! One down.

Thank you, @classof2015!
Thank you @Glido

Another para of the CA esay today!M

glido–how exciting…first app!

Hello, jrmama!

D up to ten schools to apply to. CA done except for those bleeping recommenders, which we have to wait for guidance counselor to fix. First week of Sept, submitting three apps not on CA. Senior meeting on 9/18–I cant wait that long!

yay glido! Way to go!

omg you people with apps in or ready to go awaiting recommendations or supplements are total overachievers! My kiddo has not thought about college apps yet. (In fairness to him, he only just got back from a summer program overseas.) I do not expect anything more than his summer homework to get done before school starts, although we are doing 3 college visits (including his first interview) next week.

I thought I’d share, for your amusement, the latest turn of events in our quest for a 2014 college admission:

The school administrator/teacher my son was counting on to provide one of his required recommendations is, as of a month ago, no longer with the school . . . and is now running a head shop!

(And, yes, I do realize there are colleges where this change in circumstances would improve the teacher’s credibility. ;))

I’ve been a lurker as well, but have enjoyed reading. I didn’t go all the way back on this thread, but feel a great sense of belonging with all of you who can’t get the X14’s to even take small steps.

My S1 14 was away for 6 weeks of Beginning Filmmaking, which he loved, but he has barely touched the summer homework and has only updated the essay they began at the end of AP Lang class last year. We are lucky that we don’t start school until September 9th, but with many of the Film Production programs, the applications are due December 1st at the latest. He still has so much to do. We’ve only visited a few schools and at this point will be applying to some unseen. He did create the CA account, but didn’t get far. I’m so happy to see some of the guidance here for the issues people have encountered with it.

Thanks to all for being here! This will be a crazy year.

@dodgersmom, gotta ask… What’s a head shop???

^me too – I’m guessing it’s a place that sells drug paraphernalia. dodgersmom – was your kid close to this letter writer? If so, there’s an essay in there somewhere!

welcome, my2sonsfromca. I lurked for a long time before joining my daughter’s thread (HS Class of 2011). The filmmaking course sounds neat!
