Parents of the HS Class of 2014

Congrats, glido!!!
And welcome new parents!!!

Word over on the U Alabama forum is that if your kid’s account has extra tabs for “student” or a link to the honors college app, then that means they’re in … So DS has one unofficial acceptance! :)

Yes, indeed, as Classof2015 guessed, it’s a place that sells drug paraphernalia. :)

Congrats beadymom, glido, ordinarylives!!! What a great feeling and wonderful start to your kids’ senior year! It definitely takes the pressure off… :)

@dodgersmom, thanks for explanation! My gosh, what a shock and guess it does make for a good story as Class2015 said! I learn so much from all you parents on here, LOL! Hopefully they will have a new replacement soon!

I have also been enjoying reading about all your son’s Eagle Scout projects! Kudos to all who have come so far!! My son for a while was interested in MS but never did join for one reason or another, however I know he would have fit right in. Totally admire your sons’ dedication, hard work and service to the community!

Progress with DS is slow. He is writing and making little progress. Are you parents inputting the info on the common app yourself or letting your kids do that? I have this anxiety that DS would be careless and mess things up so I told him leave that blank for now and focus on the essays instead. Guess I can always go back and double check his work afterwards… but somehow I feel a bit nervous about the whole application process. It’s almost like the final step and process for sending you kid away to college… I know silly…

Time to grab a drink from the Happy Hour tonight in the 2014 Recalcitrant Lounge… Cheers and welcome to new parents too!

My son decided that he wanted to work on the Common App while I was in the throes of colonoscopy prep last night. I was in the bathroom. His bedroom is across the hall from it. He was hollering questions to me about my education and title, etc. I finally yelled across the hall “Do we really have to do this TONIGHT?”

Remember when they were two and every time you got a phone call, they HAD to have your attention? It kinda felt like that.

haha BarnardMom, figures… hope all went well with the colonoscopy – not my favorite routine diagnostic.

With DS1 we made him fill in the common app himself, but he asked us to come to his room and answer questions at some point. Will do the same for DS2.

LOL, BarnardMom, so sorry you were dealing with the colonoscopy throws. What stuff we have to go through.

ognopgod–My D and I sat at the table together. She filled it out while I looked on. It was helpful for her, and allowed me some hovering :). We have developed a great bonding experience through this whole process. Sending her off will be so sad!

Welcome my2sonsfromca! Sounds like a fun filmmaking course.

BarnardMom - thanks for the laugh! I hope all went well today.

Dodgersmom - sheesh!! What a great example (NOT!) … I’m sorry for your son though.

My son had an essay-writing workshop at his school and came home today with the UC prompts all completed, teacher-approved, and ready for the application to go online October 1. We want him to apply to one college closer to home than the nearest UC (as an “emotional safety”) but haven’t yet decided whether to go for the local LAC (common app) or CSU. He might be able to avoid that common application entirely!

beadymom - awesome! Congratulations!

ognopod, I will double check everything with a fine-toothed comb before he hits that “send” button!!!

ognopod - I have the same concern about my s and the CA. He has a CA workshop at his high school next Tuesday, so as much as I would like him to get the ball rolling, I haven’t wanted him to even set up the CA account yet. He is giving me random shout outs when he has completed another paragraph for the CA essay, so that is good. I have told him to not send anything out without me checking it over.

my2sonsfromca - My s was away for 6 wks for Musical Theatre. I spend a lot of time on the MT forum, and the amount of preparation needed for pre-screens/auditions/supplements is threatening to send me into panic mode, so I feel for you and your s and the work ahead.

barnardmom – you poor thing – yes, they always pick the wrong moment to need us.

does anyone know the answer to this question? When I got my mac, I bought Office for Mac which came with 2 extra free downloads. I installed it on my mac, then when we got S a new Mac about 2 weeks ago, I tried to install it (typed in the very long, very weird product key) and hit “download” and I got an email from MS saying “thank you for downloading office for mac” but now we can’t find it in “downloads” on his laptop. Did I use up a download? Should I call Apple or Microsoft? Where else could the download be?

^^^^
Class 2015

My husband suggest

If it did download it should be in users/(your user folder) /downloads
If not call Microsoft because they may have you listed as already downloading it - just need to explain that you are installing it on a new machine.

Bardnardmom - hope you recover quickly today…not fun!

thanks onlyonemom – I’ll try it!

Class2015, did you also look under the Applications Folder to see if it’s there?
Also, in the right top corner search using the magnifying glass (spotlight) for “Microsoft Office”. Do you see anything?

ognopgod – I didn’t see anything when I clicked on Applications (that’s the icon on the furthest left with the strange “face”?). S had set up his account and a “guest” account so maybe I accidentally downloaded it under the “guest” account, but he checked there too – couldn’t find it.

I’m at work now but I’m going to use your suggestions when I get home. I called MS – this very Indian sounding person just could not understand that I did not have my mac in front of me or that the problem wasn’t with my mac. “If you will permit me to access your computer so I can check for the software”. Three times he said this.

Classof2015–yes, the strange face is the Finder icon. When you click Finder, you should/may have a pull-down list of Favorites on the left. (I don’t know if all Macs are configured this way or if my in-house tech team just sets the computer up for me this way.)

There should be a tab for Applications. I view mine as text (as opposed to icons), using the second view option of the four at the top of the Search window. You should see Microsoft Office 2011 listed alphabetically, with a little pull-down arrow showing each of the MS products (Word, Excel, etc).

My desktop just suffered a complete HD failure so we had to reinstall everything, and were able to reinstall Office w/o any issue. Good luck! I have two very Mac and tech-savvy boys, so feel free to ask any questions.

Aah…thank you, CT1417. I’ll play around with it at home – thanks

Congrats to everyone whose child has hit the send button on the CA. We’re not quite there, yet. DD is waiting for something, but I can’t remember now, what that was. Essay is written but needs an edit. It all seems a bit surreal.

And oh, Dodgersmom, I had to laugh. I know it’s not funny, but oh my. Definitely an essay in there somewhere!

Hoping it all went well for you yesterday, Barnardmom.

Thanks for all the well wishes. Colonoscopies themselves are the easy part- the prep is hard. For me, the results are usually the worst part. I’m quite a bit sicker than I thought I was or want to be. But, I had my little self pity party yesterday and today its back to living my life- with Crohn’s and the hassles that come with it. There are worse things and I will cope and continue to follow my medical regime.

This weekend, we have an Eagle project to continue (maybe finish???)

BarnardMom, sorry to hear about your disappointing results, but life’s disappointments sometime help us to better appreciate the good times. I had about the worst possible result from a colonoscopy nine years ago, but after surgery and chemo I survived and learned to appreciate the little things more than I did before.
