Parents of the HS Class of 2014

Well…what was supposed to be a momentous occasion turned into SUCH an annoyance! Posted this on the Common App thread, but maybe you guys have some answers…did anyone else have a problem with submitting? Now we’re afraid to try to submit the rest!

…D14 and I just tried to submit her first common app for UConn. Got to the payment page, sent payment successfully (received confirmation for that), and then…Common App sent me right back to payment page again! We could not go to step three to have her sign and submit.

So…I thought I did it wrong…and like an idiot, I did the whole thing again…yes, paid the fee AGAIN. And…it brought us right back to the payment page. Only options are to pay it (again) or cancel.

No green check for submission. She is stuck. (I am contacting UConn for a refund and Common App for help.) I am so upset!!!

Help?

PS–Congrats Missypie!!!

Congrats Missypie! That is so nice.

Missypie, congrats! That’s awesome!

My son has gone 4 for 4 in the acceptances department. Heard from another school yesterday morning. He plans to use a free app to another school, because its track and field coach called him, and he seems to like the school and its offerings. He’s taking the October SAT and hoping for a nice jump in his score so he can maximize his options – financially.

And while Son '14 is running in a big invitational this weekend, we’ll start the process of moving his older brother out. He landed his first job and an apartment about 75 minutes away from our home.

cake - That sounds SO frustrating! (Not to mention expensive! ;))

Keep in mind, though, that the good news is that her application is still saved . . . no matter what happens with the submission, all that stuff she spent hours entering is still there. (Wouldn’t necessarily be the case with a school with its own app that needs to be completed in a single sitting.)

Wow, momreads, that’s great!! Congrats on Son '14’s 4 for 4! What a way to start! And congrats on his older brother getting his first job and apartment! Please send some of those good vibes our way. :)

Cake-… DS has submitted 10 applications via the Common AP and the same glitch occurred, seemingly with complete randomness, on about 4 of the payment submissions. In each instance the Help Desk people for the CA were able to fix it very quickly. You just need to email them, identify the school, and if you’re able the transaction ID number from the CA. I never had the issue with double payment, but I would agree that unfortunately you’ll probably need to go through the school to get the refund or transaction voided. I would bet that the schools have already, had to deal with this. It was really tempting to push the credit card resubmit button. Good luck. And your daughter should still feel really good about the first submission.

Congratulations Missypie - I wish everyone’s college process was that simple. Now you can both sit back and enjoy the rest of Senior year!

Cake - we have not done CA, but that sounds so frustrating. Hope you can get your money back. D is not applying to a ton of schools. Her #1 is part of the CA, but she is just going to do their regular application and then go from there. I think she will only end up applying to a handful of schools.

That’s great missypie!

Thanks, dodgersmom, zebradome, and Vandyeyes for the well wishes! What a pain!

Vandyeyes–that is great advice! I emailed CA with the ID #'s and hopefully they will take care of it! They did mention about waiting 48 hours to see if it posts, so I will do that as well. We will try to submit the others tonight. Hopefully no more problems!

Apparently others have had this same problem…so Facebook reports. I really did not expect this to happen!

HI all

Congrats MissyPie!!

News here is K2 got the first acceptance letter today. Yay

As for the essay that the GC didn’t like, K2 and GC met and I hope that gets edited this weekend.

As soon as it is done, the other apps will go out. I think it will be 5 more. I have a feeling that a couple have slipped off the list.

DS submitted 4 apps tonight and is taking packet to GC tomorrow to request transcripts, etc. It’s nice to get that step completed. Unless something else pops up on his radar, these are the only schools he’s applying to. In other news, he’s driving to school for the first time tomorrow!

But, Cake, this is what makes it so FUN! :D

Really, I think only one parent per year is allowed to have an easy time of it . . . and this year, it was missypie. All the rest of us can do is fasten our seatbelts and hope for the best.

Well, except for jeannemar, who should remind her son to fasten his seatbelt tomorrow! :)

Missypie - that’s great!

Too bad you wiill miss sailing with most of us on the SS Indecision in April! :D

fogfog - Congratulations on K2’s first acceptance letter!

And jeannemar, congratulations on DS’s submission of all planned apps! Best wishes for a great first day of driving to school!

Looking forward to both those days!

(looking around at all the happy parents with acceptance letters) – I feel like I’m back in 7th grade and all the other girls have boobs already and I don’t…

But very happy for all of you! As my mother said, your day will come. :)

Seriously – for those of you who have hit submit – what’s up with the Ferpa waiver? If you say you are not waiving your right to see the LORs, do you then see them before they’re sent? After they’re sent? How does that work?

He’s doing more than I realized. He asked me how the printer can be used to make copies last night and made copies of the info sheet that he has to give to the GC and teachers for recommendations. He’s plugging along.

I’m still trying to figure out how to get trips to Chicago, Ithaca and Providence into our schedules. I figured out the money- now it’s the time!

Congrats to fogfog and jeannemar! Wow! Your guys are way ahead of mine. I keep telling myself, it is only September.

I’m checking in after a long time away and it is so exciting to see those acceptances and apps submitted already! Congrats to all.

We made a big move over the summer from South America to Africa (with 6 weeks in the U.S. as well). So far we are enjoying Africa, but have been a little overwhelmed with just how hard daily life is here.

My kids are attending an African school that uses the British national curriculum. It is quite different for them. D2 had originally planned on returning to her international school in South America 2nd semester and graduating there. Now she has decided to stay with us which is great, but is making college apps more difficult. I hope we haven’t ruined her college chances!

She is still working on essays and really doesn’t want my involvement in the whole application process. This is much different from D1, so I need to learn to step back a bit.

My understanding of FERPA: If you don’t waive your rights, you could go to the college after a decision is made and request to see your recommendation letters. Obviously, this could have a chilling effect on honest evaluation letters since a student who is denied acceptance could go back and hit the “recommender” with a law suit, potentially even a civil rights suit (read big $). Therefore most colleges will not consider recommendations for which the student has not waived his FERPA rights. It doesn’t mean you can’t see them, The recommender may choose to provide you with a copy. (I always do. If I wouldn’t feel comfortable sharing my recommendation with you because it was less than positive, I’d just tell you I wasn’t going to recommend you in the first place.)
