Parents of the HS Class of 2014

Blueiguana and Classof2015, thanks for the chuckles.

Lots2do -

I can’t offer advise on this issue, sadly only support one parent to another. When my hs2011 grad was going through this process the parents group had at least one MT parent “momofsongbird” who was going through this process and I learned a lot hearing about her journey. I don’t think she’s active on the forum anymore. Another parent Emmybet’s DD is getting a BFA and I think had to go through additions during admissions. Anyway, I remember it adding another layer that was a lot to navigate and exponential stress.

I hope there is another parent here who can give you some insight to what they are doing.

It’s good to know I’m not alone in this craziness. DS has submitted 6 applications, 8 to go. All are CA and all with additional essays. His school requires he apply and then request transcripts one month before the due date. He has 4 due for December and 4 for January so he has to finish up essays for 4 of them by November 1st. Hasn’t started any of them. He is really busy with ECs and AP/Honors classes but always manages to find something else to do (socialize or rest) when he has a little bit of downtime. I get it, it can’t be all work and no play but i’m really stressing out at the amount of work he still needs to do and the deadlines looming.

Not seeing anything on the application portals yet. There is still one teacher who hasn’t done the LOR so nothing has come from the school on those who require them. He had two schools that did not require LORs and the school sent out those transcripts this week. Also, we requested the test scores to be sent this past weekend so there hasn’t been enough time for schools to receive them yet. I too will be happier when I see things happening on the portals. Unfortunately, most of these first 6 are not his favorites. Mostly safeties and just one important one.

In our case, I’m not worried about him getting in to most of the schools he is applying to. The real concern will be the money. He will need at least full tuition in order to go to any of the ones he really likes and we won’t find out about that until late in the Spring so it’s going to be a long year!

That’s priceless!! I have had that autocorrect happen to me before. It could make sense. Your son wants to go there, really, really bad, defying anything. I do agree, at least it was a word so the possibility that they might chuckle at the changed meaning is there (please!). S3 might assist costumers who come in at the end of the month dressed for Halloween…it could happen.

I am not against homework, I am against busy homework that’s given on Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday and due by Friday. If the goal of the homework is to help kids learn and do well, why not give them the time?

Hi, all. Checking in after some period of inactivity. DS does not have a single app completed, sigh. One is just awaiting transcript, and it is his absolute safety so that is fine. He will get in there and qualifies for automatic full tuition but it would be nice to make it official.

One EA app is nearly done, and the coach from that school has called DS several times to encourage the app so that too is nice.

We have great counselors but the mechanics of the process is just so confusing. Despite attending a tech school all school materials are submitted via snail mail so there has been some confusion over assigning counselors and recommenders in the CA.

But DS is remarkably unfazed. He is the most relaxed I’ve ever seen him, despite 5 APs, one post AP, and one honors. His fall sport is in mid-season and we are actually already prepping for senior night!

The biggest thing on DS’s mind at the moment is beach week! His group of friends had been busy checking out houses that can fit all of them, and be in close proximity to the house their female counterparts are renting.

It will all get done, I suppose. I’ll just be happy when he has one acceptance in hand.

Another question on submitting scores…I did submit ACT scores prior to his sending Common App so they would have them when we submit some are for 11/1 deadline.
We plan to “press the button” on weekend of 10/26 after we have the 10/5 scores.
Was that a mistake??

Agree, that AP classes are sort of a special case. And my daughter has been taking a ton of them the past three years.

Though (A) I’m not really sure how much “May exam material” there is to go through for the English AP classes and (B) I am, as previously stated, philosophically opposed to “college level” classes in high school.

tpcrd66-
We’ve sent scores ahead of apps with both kids and never had a problem with them matching up upon arrival.

Hi, All! Guess what…D14 received her first college acceptance today!!! I’m posting in acceptances thread. It’s a safety, but if that’s the only one she is accepted to, she will still be fine with it. So excited!

Congrats on the first acceptance cakeisgreat! Our K2 sent off the first app (non-CA) weeks ago and 3 via CA last week. Discovered on Monday, that our school hadn’t sent out their packet of LORS, Profile, Transcripts etc. yet. The first school is one that is known for it’s Honors College and HC housing, which goes quickly. Reading the forum on CC and seeing all of the posts about acceptances and mailing housing deposits was a little un-nerving. Guidance did get everything out the door this week after K2 checked in with them. After speaking with the Uni in question, they said there is plenty of time and not to worry. K2 has one more non CA app that is due 10/15. The drag has been all of the supplemental essays for Honors and Scholarships. All test scores have been sent thanks to another CC thread that talked about the length of time needed. Had no idea that it could take 2 weeks+ for colleges to get the scores after we order them. Several apps to finish CA supplemental portions with 12/1 dates and a couple in January, but we are encouraging K2 to be completely finished by Halloween. Keeping fingers crossed… Whew! I have a headache just from sharing our experience. I recall aging 10 years the last time we went through this process, but that was without the great knowledge and support of the CC community!

Congratulations, cakeisgreat!! How exciting! So looking forward to that first acceptance!
:)

Thanks, guys! I can’t wait to see everyone hear post news of their kiddos acceptances!

@CinMom…my school is having trouble sending the LORs and transcripts which is so annoying! It’s not the school’s fault but Common App. We spent all this time in summer getting everything ready because we thought it would move things along somewhat, yet with all the problems with CA, it didn’t make that much sense to be so early. The acceptance we received was from a non-CA school. I am so happy to have one and so nervous that the EA colleges wont have the bleeping LORs/trans by 11/15!!!

Agree with blueiguana: We have sent SAT scores ahead of apps and have never had a problem.

Congratulations cakeisgreat!

@cakeisgreat -Thankfully our school is sending everything the old fashioned way (via PDF). Hope all the CA glitches are fixed by the ED/ EA dates for everyone.

Ok so it’s 2 in the morning and I am freaking out. I just realized that the test scores need to be in and I am reading in different places that they can take up to 5 weeks to get there? I can find nothing on the SAT site that says how fast they get to the school. And then it takes time for the scores to get matched up with the “folder” at the schools? I am so confused. It sounds like our school puts the scores on the transcript, too. Is this typical? I understand that the college would have to verify the scores but if they happen to start in on your kid’s folder are they going to dismiss it if the official scores are not on the folder. I read somewhere that the school might have their SAT scores received every 2 weeks? and then they have to start matching them up? It seems so tedious. I am just afraid that my kid’s scores would be sent in a clump just missing the Nov 1 date and then they would review his app before the scores show up. Should I cough up the (ugh)priority fees in order to get the scores to the schools by Nov. 1?
This whole testing thing is such a racket. (Free scores! Only you have to order them before you know them. You can re-test! But we make the deadline cut- offs such that you don’t know your previous score before the deadline for the next test! But that’s ok…you can pay the late fee!! Oh yeah and no testing in summer because that would just be more convenient for the kids!) It’s disgusting.

Hmm, hearing about all these glitches makes me think that our school has the right idea by doing it the old fashioned way, at least for this first year of the new app.

MrsPepper, relax. I think the transmission of scores to schools is almost instantaneous (i.e., electronic); the up-to-5 weeks is the time it can take to put the scores in the right folder. In any case, I’ve never heard of someone’s application being thrown out because of a score not arriving in time.

My take on priority fees is that it’s one of the all-time ripoffs. They don’t “normally” send scores by carrier pigeon and then “overnight” the priority scores. There are a number of schools that my DS might apply to, and I had the scores sent to all of them. One $30 priority ship is nearly equal to 3 $11 normal sends, so I figured that if he never applied to one or two of the schools, the school would just have some orphaned scores. DS took SATs once and was done, so it was an easy call for me.

I would agree that this was not the right year for my school to decide to send everything via Naviance to CA. They had piloted it on a smaller scale last year, were happy with the results, so moved to full Naviance-CA this year, perhaps not anticipating the total disaster the CA 4 implementation would be.

I am with those worried about score reporting while at the same time agreeing with Ixnay that the rush reporting fee has got to be some sort of scam. Having said that, when I ordered the report from my son’s Oct test last year (Score Report perhaps—where CB sends the student’s answers and the correct answers along with the test book), CB took eight weeks to deliver that. Granted, that is not the same as an electronic submission, but I couldn’t believe that it needed eight weeks after the test date.

CB’s standard reply is that it will take one to two business weeks plus their processing time (!?!?!) to deliver non-rush electronic scores and one to three business days for rush service. Again, find this impossible to believe, but may break down and spend the $38 or whatever it is.

I wouldn’t worry about the scores. They are sent electronically, so it’s really up to the school that receives them to get them attached to the correct folders.

Two years ago my sis had an appointment at a college in NC to discuss admissions. My son had applied to that school the first early round. She said there were literally boxes and boxes piled all around of kids applications.

I’m sure there is a method to the madness, and I’m also sure missing test scores would not prevent the file from review since they’re sent electronically.

We’re also in the first full year of naviance and now I’m kicking myself for complaining two years ago when everything was sent snail mail. We’ve been waiting 2 months now for transcripts to be sent.
