Parents of the HS Class of 2014

Ixnay-I guess my concern stems from the UVA admissions officer blog cited a few pages back. He seemed to allude to the risk in not getting the scores to the school before the admission officer reviews your folder. I thought he mentioned that the possibility is that the EA app would go to the RD pile.
I guess I mistakenly thought scores could be immediately sent from CB and that there is someone in those schools who might match up scores on a daily basis, not that some schools choose to receive their scores on only a weekly or bi-weekly basis and then take some time to match. Our school’s college counselor never filled us in on that process.

I have been reading this thread with great interest since I have a daughter who is a senior. I just wanted to point out to those waiting for ACT with writing results from the September 2013 test that you should check or have your child check his/her account on the ACT web-site daily to see if his/her writing scores have been uploaded if you have not yet received the writing scores. The ACT with writing score can’t be sent out until the writing portion score is ready. An email is supposed to be sent to the tester informing him/her that his/her scores are ready, once the writing score is uploaded. However, what I have found is that this email is not sent the same day that the writing score is uploaded and in fact can take several days to be sent. This happened to my DD on a prior ACT test and has happened with the September test as well–she still has not received an email telling her the score is ready even though her full score has been ready since yesterday.

My point is that for those of you with seniors applying EA or ED and who are waiting for the September ACT with writing results to be ready in order to send them, you should not rely on receiving the email notification because there could be a delay in getting it, which can cost you a few days of delay.

I also read this on the ACT site:

“•As standard follow-up, colleges and agencies that receive your priority report will also receive your complete report when ACT sends additional student reports—at least every two weeks. Colleges that receive reports only electronically might not review priority reports.” [Send Your Scores | Costs and Delivery Options | ACT Student](<a href=“ACT Test Scores | ACT Scoring | ACT”>ACT Test Scores | ACT Scoring | ACT)

So, I assume that priority reports are paper reports? I was worried when I read that colleges may not review priority reports. I guess one would need to check with each college then to make sure . University of Michigan stated on its web-site that it does not read paper reports. This is what it stated on its web-site:

“Your SAT/ACT test scores must be sent directly from the testing agency and be received in our office by our deadline. Please plan ahead – rush paper scores are not accepted.” [Freshman Applicant Requirements | University of Michigan Office of Admissions](http://www.admissions.umich.edu/drupal/requirements-first-year-students)

Keep in mind that I have no idea how rush SAT reports are sent–whether electronically or by paper/mail. DD is only using her ACT scores, so you’d need to check the CB web-site for that info.

Interestingly enough, for all of the ACT score reports that DD has sent out thus far, the option to send a priority report was not offered to her in the ordering process, since it stated something to the effect that the particular colleges accept reports electronically and therefore a priority report is not needed.

So, I am hoping that the colleges on her list will receive these electronic reports timely.

I just went in and sent my DS’s scores to all the Early Action / Priority Review / etc. schools he is applying too, plus the one school in Canada (with a really late deadline, but they encourage Americans to apply early if possible, so they can try to give them an answer earlier than their standard timeframe, which is I think mid- to late-May.) Anyhow, the only one going by snail mail is the one to Canada. All the others are transmitted electronically, and they explicitly say that there’s no benefit to paying for rush service for those.

I just ordered the ACT score to DS’ first college application. I am now looking over the SAT college board score report. I realized that we can send the SATI and SATII (subject test) on the same report. What about AP scores? They are also from College Board, right? But I did not seem to see the option of sending AP scores with the SAT score report. It would be nice if we can send all three and pay one time.
Maybe we don’t need to send AP scores at all. I know DS has self reported them in his common application. Is that sufficient?

No, you can’t send the AP scores along with the SAT scores, but as you guessed, you don’t need to officially send them with your application. Self-reporting is sufficient. Later when he enrolls somewhere, he will probably need to send them officially if he wants to use them for credit/placement.

It is not possible to send the official AP scores on the same report as the SATI and SATII reports. When the AP score report is generated, there is no selection as to what specific test results get sent…all scores are included for a single fee.

My experience (having unfortunately done it the other way) is to just self-report the scores in the CA, or better yet, have the scores included in what comes from the high school GC or transcript if that is feasible. I mistakenly thought that receiving an “official” college board AP report was the better way to go (the scores were all good…three 5s and a 4), but the reality is that several of the schools have not been able to locate the scores despite the College Board showing confirmation of the report being successfully transmitted electronically at the end of August. It has been very interesting…the smallest LA college and mid-sized research school can’t locate the scores, but the extra-large OOS public have them in his file…go figure. It is clear to me that official AP score report documents are primarily intended for college course accreditation, rather than undergraduate admission files.

Hope that helps.

ok maybe I did this wrong but yesterday I logged on to ACT website and requested his scores be sent to all his EA schools that required scores. Some schools said to send all; some just wanted one. For the ones that just wanted one, I sent the April test (which is marginally better than June and Sept); for the ones that wanted all, I ordered all 3.

But Sept writing portion isn’t in yet. So will those orders be on hold until Sept writing is in? Or will they send April and June then Sept will come when it’s ready?

Why does it even matter if as they say on the website, writing doesn’t count toward composite score?

Thank you PurplePlum…you reminded me to go check, and the ACT with writing score was just posted for my D. She is not applying EA anywhere, but has submitted a couple of applications, so it’s nice to have that part settled.

We visited a school on Monday (fall break), state directional with a “new” program in DS’s area of interest. New program is a bunch of equipment in a storage closet with new prof who hasn’t really met all the other faculty yet. Not impressed. We’ll go to a local LAC next week - I used to work there, actually. They’ve always had a very laid-back approach and encourage creativity and collaboration. We’ll see if they have the facilities to back it up. DS is at least willing to consider it.

Classof2015:

When you order ACT results, you place each order by the individual test date. So, since technically you ordered the scores for each test result separately, I would imagine that each gets sent out to the specified colleges when the results are ready to go. So, for those results already in the system–they should be good to go–remember when you placed the order, you paid for each order separately (April results order, June results order & Sept results order)–thus they are three separate orders, as I understand it. However, the ACT people will not send out an incomplete result/score, as you know. Thus, if you are waiting on the writing part of the Sept. ACT to be scored and uploaded to your account, then you can pre-order the score report but it won’t get sent out until the writing score is uploaded. The recommendation on the ACT web-site that I saw when I was looking at my DD’s incomplete ACT score (prior to the writing score being uploaded) was to wait until the writing score was uploaded prior to placing the order, if my memory serves me. It did not say you could not place the order, but I seem to recall a recommendation to wait–though I can not recall why it suggested to wait. Maybe it had to do with one’s ability to order a priority report if a result is pre-ordered? I am not sure and you’d need to follow up with the ACT people on that.

My advice to you is to watch for the writing results to be posted to the account and follow up with the ACT to make sure that goes out timely. I would imagine if the system accepted your order for that result that it holds it in its system till it is ready to go–but as paranoid as I am I would follow-up just to be sure. I decided to wait till the writing score was uploaded prior to placing the order for the Sept. results because I was paranoid that somehow the score would not be sent out timely and DD has an EA deadline we are worried about.

**Editing to add: Just remember that if time is of the essence and you need to send out the score report as soon as it is ready, then maybe pre-ordering an incomplete score report is the way to go, assuming that the ACT does process the order timely, once the writing is uploaded. If you had decided to wait on ordering the report, then I would have suggested that you check your child’s account at least once per day to see when the score was uploaded and then you could order the score report immediately. I guess you could always check with the ACT to see what the benefit is to pre-ordering an incomplete result.

mathmomvt and vandyeyes,
Thanks for your replies about the AP score report.

And when will it be fixed? We last heard it (whataver “it” is) was to be functional as of 09/27 but that seems to not be the case. There has been no communication forthcoming from the school, and I’m sure a lot of students and parents are growing anxious with application deadlines rapidly approaching. My son has already been accepted to four non-CA schools, and I’m starting to wish we’d used each school’s own app for all of them! Thanks for any information on this problem.

My son’s GC sent out the school report and LORs through Naviance today. They are appearing in his CA.

thanks pupleplum for the explanation – that makes sense, especially since I found it incredibly cumbersome to type in my credit card number so many times (they should be like Amazon where you add these orders to your cart then checkout).

His scores are almost identical for each 3 testing date so even if they don’t have Sept., they’ll have basically the same info

And I will keep checking to see when writing is in

Just reading all these posts about EA, ED, LOR, ACT, SAT, CA, AP, makes me dizzy. Are we over-thinking this? Funny, I told this to my D’s counselor and she said “no, you’re not. It’s called planning.”

I actually just got back from a meeting with my daughter’s HS counselor. I didn’t expect much from her since this is a huge public HS (about 600 per class). But I came out from that meeting impressed how knowledgeable she is and she answered most of my questions regarding the application process in general and to some specific to her school.
Her school doesn’t accept transcript from a CC college or from an online school to be uploaded to CA. We need to send it our selves through those schools.

She offered that she can read my D’s essays and can give pointers on how to improve it. So that was encouraging. She also gave my daughter some recommendations on how to approach teachers doing LORs. The schools requires a packet given to the teacher doing the LOR: resume, copy of transcript, personal statement and a completed form that listed their stat (grades, SAT, ACT, AP scores, classes currently taking), awards, EC, volunteer, jobs, etc.

Not sure if my D can make the EA deadline, but she’ll try.

@jrmama496
Do you know if schools that are not using Naviance has the ability to see the school report and LOR’s on CA? Or this is only true with schools that are using Naviance.

Can you also see if the teacher’s LOR is in CA?

2018dad – I have to catch myself because every time I see someone post “all D’s schools are CA schools” I think “oh – she’s applying to schools in California.”

2018dad - I don’t know if schools not using Naviance can see it. CA now shows me the name of the teacher and the date the LOR was submitted as well as the date the school report was submitted.

LOL. That and CC. It could mean College Confidential or Community College.
