Parents of the HS Class of 2014

A little hint about online decision releases… when S went through this a few years ago the college actually released the decision hours early. Also - websites tend to crash as well at decision time.

Great news JJG!!! Hoping my DS will be following him!

Congrats JJG :)

Anybody’s kid applying to Rollins College?

My daughter came close to applying to Rollins. But when she visited Eckerd and realized what a great fit it would be, she decided not to follow thru with Rollins.

Has your D decided, Dory? My guy told me today that he’s already put his deposit in at Eckerd - a couple of days ago - directly from his own bank account… He’s VERY set on wanting to go there. He’s been hunting around for other local scholarship $$ too. It’s kind of nice seeing him with a goal.

Akmom - that is a great story and a perfect analogy for how schools pick kids. I’m going to use that with S. It’s a great way to de- personalize this often brutal disappointing process.

JJG - what great news! Congrats!

AKmom124 – thanks for sharing that story. The analogy can go on: big productions need lots of kids, sometimes you need to keep auditioning to find a good fit, not everyone wants to be in the musical…

Akmom -I LOVE that analogy! Thank you for sharing it and tell your D that we think she’s awesome!

JCCsmom, thank you for the UC tip. My son checked and all tests scores are there. Do you know if they have a spot for showing receipt of transcripts?

lab317 - how fun to watch your child light up like that! And salmon with sugar cookies sounds awesome.

Big day today, with Brown, Columbia, and Duke early decisions out. Not schools DS applied to, but several of his friends and classmates are happy tonight. Also heard that Fordham had a snafu, initially mailing out acceptances, but then having to retract some and changing them to deferrals.

DD got the email tonight that her ED school will release the decisions via their portal on Saturday.

I still have a hunch it will be tomorrow, but we will see.

And yowza, 2014novamom. How does that (Fordham) happen? Ugh.

Calla1, UC’s don’t take transcripts until you are accepted. Where did you apply? My S applied to UCB, UCLA, UCSD and UCI, plus other schools.

So my son will find out tomorrow at 7pm CST here in Texas about his Claremont ED result. He is really anxious to know, and so am I. It would be wonderful of course if he got in, on many levels. Stress in our family has been off the charts this year due to serious illnesses earlier in the year - cancer and brain surgery, all with good prognosis, thank God - my husband dealing with a chronic condition which thankfully is easing up, and other assorted stressors. My son spent a lot of time on his CA essay and his CMC and Tulane essays and now really is not that into applying other places. However, I know that Tulane will cost us a bit more, even with his merit aid, while CMC is a lot more generous, like my daughter’s school, Vanderbilt. Well, by tomorrow evening we will know!

Best wishes to all who hear today - and UGH to any who were caught in Fordham’s snafu!!!

My S applied for Rollins. Not sure what kind of scholarship money they will offer him though. It would be nice since he would only be 4 hours from home.

So far, so good on the acceptance front. Four acceptances so far, all with scholarships (although two not really enough). No big surprise on any of these 4 though. All safeties. The tougher ones all have April 1st decision dates. S still needs to submit two more supplemental essays and then we are done with applications. Next step, 4 or 5 scholarship applications and then we wait.

Yes, good phone call from admissions office at Emmanuel College in Boston. We are not too surprised, b/c she was recruited to play soccer. BUT, the coach did say, you will be verbally committed ONCE admitted. I guess he has gotten burned before.

I thought it was a very nice touch for them to call and congratulate her. I don’t believe my son got any congratulatory phone calls 2 years ago. They said they are mailing out letters today, so that is when we will see about Merit money. No athletic money at at D3 school…they also have an honors college, but I think we will find out about that in the future. She will go there no matter what, but her parents will be a lot happier with some merit support! I am happy to have one kid close by in Boston!!! Emmanuel should be a good fit…(I hope).

Good luck to all over next week or so…with EA decisions…

Harvard SCEA results are also out today at 3:00 p.m.

I can’t believe how every year some school does something horrible with sending out incorrect acceptances! I can’t imagine anyone would actually want to attend after being told yes, pulling it back, then maybe getting in later.

Fingers crossed for everyone finding out big decisions!

We had a good conversation last night about what specific things she really wanted in a school to help narrow things down. Turns out she just pretty much wants to go to college - lol Everything on her list is at almost every school.

Good luck for those hearing results today and tomorrow! We are anxiously awaiting two this weekend!

Re: Fordham fiasco. I don’t know what was going on this year or if they have used this approach before…but they sent early acceptance emails and letters out to many applicants along with an invitation to take advantage of some service that will assist the applicant in filing for FA. I believe that same service could then work with the applicant’s other colleges also. I didn’t pay much attention to the letter or email, and both have arrived a couple of times. So, I don’t know if using this service created some confusion for Fordham or if they have always used this service.

Good luck to everyone awaiting decisions. My son’s classmates have not had too many ED acceptances this week for pure academic admits but the athletes who had been expecting to be accepted all were. Lots of deferrals and a couple of outright rejections.

I stumbled across this thread last night and found the info interesting and sobering:
