I guess everyone is trying to be sensitive in a time of high stress.

Maybe people don’t mention names for fear of hurting someone’s feelings if their child wasn’t accepted into the same school. Or maybe in my case, my d is not going after the same high level schools, but I love the kid on the couch and our excitement, frustration and fears are the same regardless of the name of the school.

Merry Christmas to all!! :)

Congrats Avonhsdad, its a good dilemma to be in :)

This is a pretty supportive thread, but lots of others on cc can get pretty contentious. So #1 I just don’t want to hear how “bad” my kids choices are (not on this thread, but there are posters who dig around in your history to pull up information and use it in other threads). All were rolling admission. She was well into the top quartile of stats for all of them.

And #2 I doubt many of the posters here have heard of 6 of the 7 d applied to (the financial safety, Truman State, does get mentioned quite a bit). We live west of the Mississippi and not on the coast. Darn few colleges out here get any sort of love from cc (mostly just Grinnell, St. Olaf, Carleton, WUSL, Macalester, and sometimes Creighton).

I’ve PMed people names when they’ve asked, though. It’ serially not a secret if someone is truly interested.

AsleepAtTheWheel: I do not mind sharing my son’s acceptances – Alabama, Miss. State, Ole Miss. UAH, Shippensburg State, Rose-Hulman and Western Carolina University. He has shopped for schools that offer merit scholarships and/or an opportunity to run track and field/cross country, along with good academics.

In the Parents Forum there is a long list of folks who are sharing acceptances. The thread is called List of Acceptances 2014. You can use the CC search to find it. I wasn’t able to paste the link on my phone.

I don’t mind sharing either. My son has acceptances to the University of Michigan and Kalamazoo College (private LAC in Michigan) so far.

He’s waiting to hear from Albion College (also a private LAC in Michigan) by January 15th (which should be a safety), but we think they’ve messed up his application so we don’t know if he’ll ever hear from them or not. They kept sending him “please finish applying” emails after he submitted everything. He emailed the admissions rep for his high school who replied that they didn’t have his teacher recommendation (which CommonApp shows as “downloaded”), his transcript (which goes through Parchment to Common App and other schools obviously got), and his ACT scores (which ACT folks say is available for the school to pull electronically). He emailed the guy back to tell him these things and never got another response. Common App shows his school report and midyear report as submitted, but not downloaded and the other two schools show as downloaded. I think they actually sent him the list of things they had rather than things they were missing. No email about qualifying for EA. No portal info to check status. We don’t really know what’s going on there, but S is not motivated to deal with it since he likes Kzoo equally.

He’d rather spend his time on RD applications- all four of which are reaches for anybody. If he doesn’t get into any of those, he’s very happy with the Kzoo acceptance and will likely go there.

I’m happy to share as well. My daughter’s list is really a mish-mash, as she is high stats & we really need any merit aid she can get, but she is applying to auditioned music programs. So… so far she has acceptances at U of Alabama, Tulane, and Chapman for vocal performance. She’s been accepted academically at CalState Fullerton, but still has to audition in March for the music program. Her super-reach is the Columbia/Juilliard exchange program - we’re not really putting much hope into that, but figured why not try? Others auditions to come are USC, Temple, & CalState Long Beach. Temple is probably going to be the best overall fit for her & value for us if she’s accepted there.

Schools that got crossed off the list for various reasons - U of Miami (bugs, alligators); U of Richmond (spider mascot); CCM, Oberlin & all the other wonderful music schools of the mid-west (too cold).

The one and only school for my youngest is Eckerd College in FL. They seem to be pretty darn close to or at the top for Tropical Marine Science/Bio (and, for him, beat out others we visited in person). His stats showed he was highly likely to get in, and he has (with merit aid), so we’re done - except for figuring out how to pay the bill.
If that part doesn’t work out, he would prefer taking a gap year to work rather than going somewhere else, so… those are the Plans A and B that we have.

He’s thrilled that he got a sweatshirt with their name on it for Christmas…

Now I’m still on here just rooting for everyone else.

Both older boys took longer to have firm plans (middle wasn’t even accepted at his school - U Rochester - by this time two years ago). This one seems almost too easy. I’m finding I really like easy!

I posted on the general thread but happy to post here as well - DS got in ED to Colgate. Had us online ordering a sweatshirt the same night as the acceptance arrived
We were super happy for him - he needed a holistic review because of some GPA problems and he got it. Merry Christmas to all and good luck to all still in waiting and deciding mode!!!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!

. . . thanks for all the responses. I’d seen the acceptance thread, but it’s pretty sterile. This thread has so much depth, texture, honest feeling and emotion. More than anything I was curious if there were some unwritten rule that I was unaware of. That said, it is helpful (for me, at least) to be able to attach specific schools to many of you (and your kids).

It’s already been commented on (on this thread, I think), but it’s amazing how early action and early decision (along with rolling admissions) have become the new regular decision. I think it’s pretty ugly how some of the more selective schools are taking so many of their admits from the ED pool, thus forcing kids to commit to their school (too) early if they want any sort of decent chance for admission.

I’m also struck with how important merit aid has become, an importance with which I’m in total agreement. My son goes to a small private high school where the counseling is slanted (for kids who aren’t considered Ivy/Stanford material) towards small liberal arts colleges that are too selective to bother with merit aid. We think that those schools are a bit of a scam, and can’t figure out exactly how they could be worth $60K/year. I’m so impressed with the parents/kids on this thread (and on CC altogether) who I think are ahead of the curve in looking at good schools that provide merit aid as well as looking at good state schools.

My son is in at Eckerd (also interested in marine science) and was deferred at Tulane. Awaiting EA at Miami, and then RD at a number of UC’s as well as at USC, the only private where I think we’d be willing to pay full boat.

Finally, stating the obvious, it’s heartening to see how we’re all going through a lot of the same stuff, and how many wonderful parents there are out there/here who have done so much for their kids to get them this far, and who simply want them to be at the right place, not the most prestigious place.

I agree about ED, but EA has been a blessing for DS. He might apply to a couple of Plan B schools, just because it’s a good idea to have a Plan B if you decide that your first choice isn’t your cup of tea at the Accepted Students events. I make it 99% that he goes to his EA school, and he’s more relaxed than he’s been since summer. That is preferable to not knowing for another 3 months. My sympathies go out to those who have another 3 months of anxiety.

Similar here too too Tracy… my DS needed a holistic review too , as his GPA was not that great in 9th-10th, but made a huge upswing in 11th. Tough/rigorous private prep, high test scores, but mostly I think his app really told a story. He also had a couple of lucky things happen that were sort of serendipitous. He will go to Kenyon with a HUGE need based award that was beyond our wildest dreams. YAY K!!!

AsleepAtTheWheel: Some of the kids who go to school with my son may claim that he “settled” for a school. With his grades and scores, as well as his ECs, he could have gone to a top 20 school, but he just hates debt. He recently said that he did not want to borrow much money, because he has his eye on grad school. He wants the best bang for his buck, while getting a solid education and representing the school as a student-athlete. That has been a very tall order to fill. But, I’m glad that he does value merit money. It’s sort of a reward for his hard work all these years.

Yeah no secrets here either. S applied to Pitt-Bradford (unloved safety, accepted with merit), Philadelphia U. (second tier choice - accepted with merit), Rowan U. (second tier - accepted with merit), Webb Institute (ED - deferred), Lafayette (first tier - Waiting), Bucknell (first tier - waiting), Rensselaer (haven’t visited yet but S is a Medal winner so merit if accepted). We’ve only crossed UPB off the list so far. Waiting to see FA packages to see which are manageable/value.

Merry Christmas, one and all! After a glutonous Christmas Eve dinner and Christmas meals, I will need to immediately start working out so I will not scare anyone in my bathing suit when the SS Indecision leaves port! I hope all of you were surrounded by those you loved this holiday season!

Go2girl is 3 for 3 in the acceptance process. She learned just before Christmas that she was accepted to her first “reach” school. Her eventual admission will depend on whether or not she will be selected for an additional merit scholarship where there are several rounds until finalists are notified. She burst into tears when she found out that she was accepted and it has been a real confidence booster. She still has six apps out where the merit money and scholarships will continue to be part of the decision-making. She knows I love to participate on CC and asked that out of respect for her privacy I don’t post her stats or schools. So I’m abiding by it.

Perhaps when all is said and done, the ink is dry and the deposit is wired, there will be more happy stories to tell!

Enjoy the rest of your holiday season! I so enjoy our virtual friendships.

Asleepatthewheel I agree with everything you said, this is a great place to share and support each other. The other threads don’t have as much heart.
S14 was accepted ED to Univ of Pennsylvania and EA to Univ of Michigan. Its great to see him so relaxed and happy.
With the increasingly competitive world of admissions and FA, its easy to overlook the fact that they are just teenagers going through other important transitions as well. I’m grateful these early acceptances give him a few months of just being a kid, enjoying the last few months of high school and not having to worry about college all the time. The real world awaits around the corner. Our family is posted abroad and he will be going thousands of miles away, its hard letting go of our baby.

Its wonderful to see so many kids making responsible and mature choices regarding college financing and fit, they are already on the right track to success. Parents have done their jobs well! Congratulations to you and your young adults :)

I will post where DS has accepted/applied as well. He was accepted to Alabama (safety) with full tuition merit aid plus 2500 engineering scholarship. Accepted to Case Western with 22k merit. Deferred ED from Wash U.

With his acceptance to Case, where he is being recruited for his sport and the nice merit, he has crossed every other school off his list with the exception of Northwestern. And he is only applying to NU at this point because DH and I are alums.

Oh I forgot Miami Ohio. He submitted that app before he heard from Case and should hear February 1.

He had left schools with supplements until the end, knowing he would drop them if he got in to either Case or WUSTL. So gone are UVA and VA Tech (in state), as well as Michigan and RPI.

He will end up applying to five schools, which is below the average for his school. According to stats put out by the school’s transcript office, they send out an average of 6.8 transcripts per senior.

He also didn’t apply to any Ivies or Ivy-equivalent, which is also unusual for his school. But he had very specific wants for a school, a mediocre 3.9 GPA, average ECs, with a decent 34 on the ACT. He knew those schools were out of reach, not just based on raw numbers, but also on the kind of competition coming out of his high school so no need to waste time and money.

Overall he is happy and relaxed now that it’s basically over. He is into a good school, with merit that leaves him with money left over at the end of the four years that is his to keep, and where he can play a varsity sport. He is still not 100% (what teenager is?), but he says he is about 90% there. He will wait to see what happens with NU (where he would not play a sport) and with WUSTL (where he would not have cash in hand when he graduates) before deciding.
