Parents of the HS Class of 2014

Moon maid - I had no idea you had so much on your plate at home! Cancer and brain surgery - hope everyone’s good now.

Moonmaid do not worry. It will all work out in the end. RD is still a possibility but Tulane is a great school in case he decides to go there. It looks like you have been through a lot. Give yourself a break. Sometimes being on CC can be both therapeutic and stressful specially when people talk about so many schools. My daughter applied ED to 1 school. And 1 was the total number of schools she applied. She got in her ED school and if not she would have applied RD somewhere else.

So my daughter was 4 for 5, which too be honest, is what we expected. Now will come the interesting part. All 4 of the school gave her very nice merit aid packages (from 14% to 68% of tuition) and 3 of them have further competitions that she was invited to attend in the next 2 months. If you look at merit packages it’s looking like school 2 is going to give her the most. It will be very interesting to see what the final packages (merit and financial) will look like.

I know her number 1 school, the one without any additional merit competition, is very comfortable to her. I went there and she has attended some summer camp programs. It would be a great fit for her and she loves it. But, we have to be practical and see what the other schools will give us. It was rather annoying, I was talking to a friend the other day and she couldn’t even understand why we were considering going to school 2’s competition. (it will involve 2 nights hotel and gas) Luckily when we asked our daughter how she felt about the competitions she said she wanted to go and see the bottom line for all the schools. I guess she has soaked in some of what we have said! I figure it will be a good experience for her with regards to interviews and thinking on your feet even if she doesn’t go to those schools.

I was talking to my SIL in Colorado who has a daughter in her 1st year of college and she had never even heard of these competitions. They seem rather standard in the Mid West from what I have seen. So have your kids experienced any of these additional scholarship money competitions and what advice do you have about them?

Congratulations to all! Sounds like all the kids will have many great options!!

I’m still patiently waiting for DS to finish his Common App Essay so that he can hit the submit button!!

A couple more supplements have been written, but now need some edits. Do you think there’s some extra luck for apps submitted on Christmas Day?!?

Moonmaid - hope all the medical issues are going ok… And your level of apps is actually more normal than most on cc IME (at our public school). My oldest applied to 3. My middle applied to 6. My youngest (my '14) applied to 1. The “6” is a little high for peers at our high school…

One can get a pretty skewed bias if one only reads from experiences on here. I suspect there are more who mainly lurk who fit more of the “average” (both in apps and grades/scores). It’s important (sometimes) to realize that there are many different, equally correct, paths pending the student and their needs.

I got curious, so just googled:

MImama—just in case you were planning to hit submit on Christmas Day….

There will be a momentary outage of the Common App on Wednesday, December 25 between 6AM – 6:15AM Eastern Time. During that period, visitors to www.commonapp.org will not be able to login or access their accounts. We will be completing system maintenance in preparation for our heaviest submission days. This outage will not affect support resources available in the Help Center at appsupport.commonapp.org.

I hope they do not suffer the same system overload problems they experienced for the Nov 1st deadline.

student4ever–I imagine by now you know that ‘submit’ equals ‘print preview’ and that nothing is actually submitted until you enter your charge card info.

moonmaid - you are dealing with a lot, and that many apps is absolutely fine! We went a little nutty, because I’m a little nutty. And now that some are submitted we’re realizing she really would only go to a few of them if they were her only choice.

Trust me a new slate of issues come into play when there are too many choices.

I hope this year is a bit calmer and a healthy one for you and your family!

Merry Christmas to all!

It looks like S worked on some essays for his top choice school last night. I think they need a tiny bit of editing, but I think they convey who he is quite well. Anybody feel like they overwrite sometimes? Try too hard?

moonmaid- I echo the sentiments of the others- you have had a lot on your plate. If your child is ok with the options, then that is all that really matters. I find that very few do national searches for the best college out there for them. Most in our area are asking where my son is going because most kids here apply to the regionals or even Michigan State- all of which have rolling admissions and the kids are done and decided. They think it is so weird that we won’t even know until the end of March. Forgive yourself. With all that going on, just forgive yourself.

A very Merry Christmas to you!

This process has consumed us all for so long, that although we are very grateful for being done and decided, its almost an anti climax. We kinda dont know what to do with the extra time suddenly. Now the idea of S leaving home is sinking in…Cherish every moment!

Merry Xmas and Happy Holidays to all!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! Signing off …need to wrap some gifts!

Merry Christmas Everyone!

We are all smiles here as K2 got a “colored” envelope today. The #1 choice…
I think the only one that could make a difference releases decisions in early Jan…and the Rd school won’t release til April–by then K2 will be done.

It has been great that for a kid who had some ups and downs in hs, to have 5 for 5 admits so far…it feels good for K2 to have success (and merit money)

Again, Merry Merry Christmas to All.

All are welcome - submitted or not, accepted or not! This is a journey for making decisions or for relaxing after all the stress of an ED/EA decision or a final RD decision based on one of the port of call visits in April. The margaritas, rum runners and sea breezes are for relaxing during the decision process. The mojitos, martinis and champagne is for toasting and relaxing after the decison is made and assists with the de-stressing process. The wine just helps everyone fall asleep at night. And for those who don’t inbibe, there are plenty of great virgin cocktails available at all of the ship’s bars and lounges. :D

D received two large envelopes today from her two EA schools confirming her acceptances and also welcoming her into the Honors programs at both schools! With 3 RD’s to go, next April could be a very difficult month of decisions.

Merry Christmas to all! With the acceptances and packages for so many, it should be a wonderful holiday season. Now, after all the food and presents, guess I better tell my son to start working on a couple of essays along with his AP English paper. I’m not the Grinch, so blame his teachers and the last few schools he is applying to.

Am I missing something?

I’m a parent of a HS senior, and I’ve enjoyed reading this thread. But why does no one (or essentially no one) on this thread actually post the name of the schools to which their kids are being accepted, deferred, etc. to/from?

LOL AsleepAtTheWheel! I was wondering the same thing. Guess it’s the culture of this thread group?? :)

lol! I never really noticed that! I think some of us do … I know I have! I believe I shouted it from every social media network rooftop when my daughter got into Vanderbilt ED!

Perhaps it’s that they haven’t 100% made a decision yet and they don’t want to jinx themselves? Maybe? I dunno … I’ve seen lots of names tossed about.

Merry Christmas!! I started (and finished!) my shopping today … first time I ever waited this long. I’m telling you, it snuck up on me.
