Parents of the HS Class of 2014

I’m going to have to opt out. The tuition exchange program at my employer requires a commitment well before April 1st. In fact, we’re one the cruise now with an offer than needs to be accepted or rejected by Feb 15.

So, dear friends, I’ll be waiting for you on the dock come May 1st!

Book me a spot on the cruise as well. Our family will also be cruising on the Grad School Indecision this year - not sure when that ship will dock! When does beverage service open??

I’m in. Unless Tulane decides to cough up a boatload of cash in the meantime.

Put me near cakeisgreat - in the queasy section. The next 4 months are shaping up to be a wild ride.

I’ll take a room! But you’ll probably find me in the Casino, hoping to win big so I can pay for it all.

I’m in - see you on the Lido Deck.

Yeah, with 5 acceptances and no front runner and all depending on financial packages, I believe we’ll be sailing with you guys! Save me a balcony!! :)

I’ll take an inside cabin please! Need to save every penny I can for the ship excursions taking us to overnight visits at the front runners’ campuses!

No need to take an inside. The cabins are all free, just like the drinks. Its the final port of call that is usually the most expensive part of this journey!

beadymom: We’re just alike. Got seven acceptances, but the finances are key. Looking forward to a seat by the pool.

Hi all

New here :)

Acceptances are rolling in- have a lot of quick college visits to make.

DD applied to too many schools!! And of course now we are having a HARD time with the choices. Still waiting to hear from 2 more and she was deferred by Tulane, U of Wisconsin and one of her top choices U of Georgia which makes NO sense at all!!!

She is a Pre-Vet major therefore applied to mostly schools that have a Vet School

99 percent sure she is going to choose Purdue but we have not even visited!!

Anyway- I am completely overwhelmed and we are trying to make a good choice!

Welcome Doberlady!

I know lots of Purdue kids and have visited the campus quite a few times … I’m sure your daughter will do just fine there. :)

thanks! We are visiting in Feb

We are hoping they will be giving some money ANY money at this point

Doberlady, believe I read somewhere that Purdue merit money comes out sometime in February…good luck and congrats…

S just received his first “big envelope” (since the Michigan decision was via email). This school is definitely his favorite in-state option and they gave him their highest merit scholarship award! Happy day  He just said “It’s great to know there’s a really good option of everybody else rejects me”.

Congrats 2016BarnardMom! Welcome Doberlady!

Congratulations BarnardMom!!! That’s awesome!!!

Captain, do you take reservations even if we haven’t hit the submit button? I would love to hop on that cruise right now.

S2 had an alumni interview for Pomona today. It sounded like a very good interview, from his description. The alumni said he could send her any additional material he wanted in the next few days - anything that he felt would help him stand out - and she would include it with her recommendation. He had a very good creative short story that he wrote for AP Eng Lit, plus an interview he did with the school paper where he talked about what it was like to deal with being on a losing team for the first time. His answers were quite thoughtful and I thought that it might be something that helps give them a little clearer picture of who he is. And because he wants to major in Science and go pre-med, the short story would show his ability to write, which Pomona sets great store by. The alumni he spoke with is a very well-respected scientist, and I think the interview made an impression on him. She said she thought a smaller LAC would be much more beneficial for him, either Pomona or Oxy - that he would get the kind of personal attention and opportunities for research that aren’t always available to all students at a larger university. Anyway, it’s all food for thought, and I am really glad that it worked out for him to get an interview. If he did get in there, it would certainly be a lot easier on our family finances and I think now he realizes what a good opportunity it would be. So all in all, a fruitful day, college app-wise.

And we are probably having the opposite problem of other folks on here - son only had a list of 6 to start, and it is shrinking to about 3. My oldest son applied to 7, daughter 5, and now much less for S2 - 1 fit (Tulane, accepted), 1 reach (Pomona, applying) and another fit/safety (Occidental, applying). Not ideal, but this one is a lot more stubborn, and there were so many distractions this past year - S1’s cancer, S2’s brain surgery, and husband’s sudden health issue that required a few months of treatment (now getting better), that I really couldn’t give his college search all of the time and thought I did with the other two. I feel kind of bad in a way, but I have a feeling it will work out OK in the end. Any one of those 3 schools would be a good fit for him academically, and hopefully he will end up in the one that also will be the best for him socially and personality-wise.

we made a mistake I think and applied to way too many schools. I would be embarrassed to tell you!!

We had an average list and then dd got referred from a school we were SURE would be no problem- we freaked out and said OMG if she was deferred there then we are in trouble and dd quickly sent out more.

We were ALL over the place with applications.

Now we have too many acceptances even crossing off the safety schools. Some schools gave a lot and some hardly anything but the most important ones have not said anything about money yet.

So now we have to spend a bunch of money going to see some schools with a not too friendly schedule.
