eyeamom- Although the weather is rough here, I did mention to one CC’er that sometimes it is better to see a school during that time because they need to understand just what winter looks like, especially if they are from a more mild climate. If they really hate it, then a school in a more mild climate might be a good idea.

DS also got into UMichigan - Engineering!

I was on Facebook last night and saw a picture someone posted of DS’ counselor’s retirement party. Ummmm…didn’t know she was retiring!! DS was called to her office last week (along with about 20 other students) so she could give them a LOR (sealed and signed) just in case they needed it. We wondered why at the time, guess we know why now! But ONE LOR?? He is finished with his schools, but has lots of scholarship/special program apps to go.

Speaking of which, I am so sick of depending on others for LORs! He applied to a special program at one of his accepted schools. He had asked his calc teacher is she would write a LOR for him and she agreed. So he listed her e-mail on the app. The school e-mailed him earlier this week saying they still had not received it. And he did nothing about it! He has not been great at following through and it’s driving me crazy!!! He may just end up at the local school for his lack of trying to make sure all the i’s are dotted and t’s are crossed.

Beadymom, I totally agree about the LORs. It puts the kid in a tough situation when they (or parent) have to follow up with their teacher, counselor, or principal to make sure the letter is in on time. Plus, more stress. But congrats on the great acceptance!

Wow - big weekend! D found out yesterday she passed her vocal performance pre-screen at USC (California) and today received her first acceptance to an auditioned program - Chapman University. Going into the holidays on a nice wave of good news!

Congratulations everyone. S has had 3 acceptances. I am happy that he is not picking favorites right now. When the state flagship acceptance came- he said it had 1/6 of a chance. Less than that if he doesn’t get straight into his program or honors.

He applied to 1 favorite school in each category.

In state safety with likely full ride due to NASF (likely finalist)
In state flagship - admitted but scholarship notification happens in April?
D3 school that he can continue his sport- CTCL school and convenient to home
Med size NYC school- (full tuition and accepted)
Smaller OOS public big 10 university. Beloved relative in that town but 9 hours away.
And the wild card. He may apply to NYU.

Basically he has to decide what he wants! Visits and revisits are being scheduled
Can anyone say April decision??

Definitely will be an April decision here. By April 11 he has to decide about Northeastern, because that is the date they require students to name Northeastern as their first choice with NMSC to get the NMF scholarship. Unfortunately, that is right before his April break. We will do some visits in February. Not sure how many or which schools we will visit then – trying to work that out now.

Like your idea Barnardmom. I think at some level we always know. If she is still struggling to make a decision in March we will give it a try!

Wow! the dam has bust - so many acceptances - CONGRATS to beadymom, Mrspepper, Moonmaid. AvonHSDad,2016BarnardMom,momreads, MImama, NYMom3kids,Cakeisgreat,Incadia, oeverseasmom, GertrudeMcFuzz, 29happymom26 and everybody else! Way to go!

^I am echoing everything glido said! Congrats to all!

I thought earlier today, I won’t post until I have good news (acceptance) but I thought, that’s not what this thread is about – it’s about supporting each other – in good times and bad. So far, S doesn’t have anything but deferrals and 1 rejection. Me and my excellent GC have a plan to turn those deferrals around, which I think is an excellent life lesson, and one that will show him how to fight for what is meaningful to him.

I am so happy for all my CC friends who have yeses (especially those with $$$ attached).

Ditto on Glido’s post. Congrats to all. K2 received admits to our state flagship and to another OOS public this past week. Waiting on Honors College and scholarship info for them. Hope that isn’t scheduled to come in March… Received invite to interview for special program at another OOS Uni. K2 accepted there back in October with full tuition scholarship and Honors college acceptance. We have yet to visit- looking forward to the trip. Unfortunately, we have 4 that don’t release results until April. Long wait!

My son is another who has no top choice. He was burnt out on visits after a school trip and hasn’t wanted to visit anywhere since last spring. Insisting that the only requirement that mattered was that the college have his desired academic program, he chose 8-9 schools that are a real mix of types. I did a lot of the research to find the programs so I feel that he doesn’t know that much about them, but he was very stubborn about not visiting.

He agreed that it was wise to apply for EA and priority deadlines, and so far he’s gotten into 4 out of 4 so far. It’s great and we’re thrilled. I’m a little nervous about the decision-making process ahead, but he isn’t a picky kid and he’ll probably do fine in a variety of environments.

Meanwhile, in his private school, the college talk is moving front and center. A lot of kids applied ED so he is seeing friends excited, disappointed, pressured, relieved. I think he is pretty happy about the lower pressure approach we’ve chosen together. The results so far (4/4) show that we were aiming realistically which was the goal. A couple of the remaining ones are reachier but it’s not at all clear that he’d prefer to attend those if he does get in.

Congrats to everyone who is getting good news! Enjoy the break and holidays with your kids.

Continuing congrats to everyone for the latest group of acceptances.

Sensing more indecision in the winds, its time to announce:

The SS Indecision (2014 edition) sets sail on April 1st. All are welcome on this low cost virtual cruise and we will start taking virutal reservations on January 1st. We will visit many ports for the undecided to revisit and hopefully select a new home for next fall. If past experience is an indication, some will jump ship and stay in a port early on but most will sail to the end and disembark on April 30th so they can hit the submit button or mail the postcard accepting their college of choice for the fall of 2014 (Class of 2018). By the way, everyone who joins the cruise by March 31st will get free unlimited adult beverages of their choice for the full month of April!! :D

AvonHSDad,
I am booking one cabin with Balcony for three. Please be sure to include the free unlimited drink for the full month of April.

I’m in!

Love how easy it is to apply and get accepted on this cruise. :)

The free drinks are a nice bonus.

I’m definitely in!

I’m in too!

Sign me up! I know you said you are not taking bookings until January, but put my request in the queue ;-)

Don’t worry. In the spirit and thirst of the holidays, all advance requests will be accepted!

May your holidays be filled with cheer (liquid or otherwise) and may we all have a brief respite from the college and scholarship application process!!! :)

I would like to pre-register for this cruise. I’ll take the unlimited adult beverage package and request a balcony suite - partly so I can either lock myself out on the balcony, or my undecided d.

I am in! I’ll need a seat near the edge and will be overdosing on Dramamine. :)
