Parents of the HS Class of 2014

Congrats to your son beadymom! It’s a great feeling, isn’t it?

Wow, calla1, I would definitely take that as a good sign. I have never heard of that…sounds like the admissions people might pass on certain applications? My D has been accepted to UCR, which is unfortunately not on her radar, and I have very low hopes for the rest of the UC’s. Minnymom, did you get a subsequent email or did your S find out via the portal about his scholarship? I don’t really think my D has a chance at one, but it seems like most of the kids who are hearing early were offered one, so I am wondering (and congratulations to your son!).

Yet another day of school closures tomorrow. Our county is very large with some parts almost rural, with narrow windy roads and no sidewalks (like where we live) and some places have not yet been fully plowed.

With the two week winter break, my kids have only been in school 9 days in the last month!

They’ve now cancelled the President’s Day holiday and one teacher workday to make up for the lost instructional time. If they add days to the end of the year DS won’t have to make them up as a senior so he is indifferent.

Partyoffour - I have noticed the same thing - usage seems to be down quite a bit. When my S1, HS class of ‘10 was going through the process, posters would find their thread moving down to Page two of the forums at a pretty quick pace. My S2 looked at CC, declared it "lame’"and said he was catching up with all the EA students on twitter. He didn’t even go for facebook.

It’s crazy, this winter weather! This latest system missed us - no precipitation forecasted. Some of these kids will be going until mid-summer!

Lots going on today!
Congrats to eyemamom - for getting acceptance and getting to mark one off the list to decide from!
Congrats to go2mom for making it to the semi-finalist round at Vandy!! How exciting!
Congrats minnymom on the scholarship!

MIMama - We are planning to rent a car, at least for part of the trip. How is public transit getting around Ann Arbor? Someone suggested the ZipCars. I’ve never used them - is anyone allowed to rent them or only the college students? I think we’ll probably stay in Ann Arbor. My younger DS would love the Children’s Museum - he’s 10, but likes those types of things.

I agree - many of the college forums are ghosttowns! I only read one of DS’ schools forums, but that’s just because it’s mostly a parent hangout - but many of his other schools haven’t had any posts in them for weeks/months! I can’t figure out where all the kids are hanging out these days. They have all abandoned Facebook in our area because all the “old” people have taken over. I see some on Twitter/Instagram.

Are any of your kids doing ScienceBowl (put on by Dept. of Energy)? DS has a competition this Saturday. He has done it before and both times previously was on the second team of his school and the first team won and got to go to Washington DC. This time he’s on the first team, so keeping my fingers crossed! (Hope I haven’t jinxed it!)

Oh … and DS bought a car Monday!! He has been looking at Subaru’s for months. Each time he’d find one, by the time he contacted the seller it would have sold. He is using his money he earns from tutoring. One of the threads was talking about cars on campus for freshman year. One school that DS looked at does not allow them. He could not imagine being anywhere without a car! I’m sure that is a regional thing - no public transportation at all where we live.

GoldenWest- S had to link his UC application number to his MyUCR account. He could then see his acceptance and notice of Regents Scholarship award. I believe all student accepted this month have some kind of merit scholarship on their portal. Good luck to your S. I also think that early acceptance to UCR indicates a good chance at other mid tier UC’s. Keep hoping!

Calla1- was your S caught off guard by a phone call from a professor? That is really something. I know some UC’s have sent out supplements for students with special challenges or who are “on the fence.” Good luck!

re: college forums - I also noticed weak forums, but I’m not sure if it is due to the college differences between my two Ss. I reviewed the forums for S’12 and all 6 that I was subscribed to had activity. Now, for S’14, I am subscribed to 5 forums. Only 1 has activity today, and the other 4 haven’t had activity for about a week. Guess who was the last poster on those forums - me!! I must be a forum stopper

Lol. Well maybe you can reverse the course student4ever! Congrats to beadymom!
And best of luck to go2girl! It is an honor to be selected as a semi-finalist! Did go2girl apply ED or RD?

Well D finished another app tonight! Only one more to go! It would be nice to have at least one acceptance in hand. She should hear something soon from her first choice (applied EA). We will have to hold our breath on the others until April 1st.

Congrats on being a semi-finalist! And hope the call from the professor is a good sign. And congrats to all those finishing up and submitting apps! I think we’ve got a couple of weeks before DD hears from another school and then the rest are not until the end of March. And she’s been emailing back and forth trying to set up interview times for three schools. Given her schedule, it’s going to be interesting to see how they’re going to fit in. Some of her commitments can be missed if necessary (dance lessons) but others she can’t skip. Hopefully she’ll hear more in a day or so. Then I can stop bugging her!

2014novamom: No school here, either. Our main roads are fine, but the back roads are awful. Of course, they still need to clean off all of the parking lots at the schools, too.

Son '14 is so bored. He wants the second semester to start! He’s had six days of school over the past five weeks. Too long of a break, he said.

Congrats to all with the scholarship news, acceptances and Eagle Scout awards. Way to go!

We may be getting a little closer to a college choice. We finally sat down over dinner with Son '14 to discuss his options. He confessed that he really would like to continue running in college, because he loves it and is good at it. He really liked the two schools he recently visited on his trip to the south. He plans to telephone the head coach at one school today to chat about campus life. He would like to know what the team’s members do during their off time. This is a real concern to him. He wants to know if they work, belong to fraternities/sororities, do lots of community service, etc. If he gets a positive vibe from the coach, then he can make a decision.

Congratulations Beadymom! It is a great accomplishment!
My son also became an Eagle Scout towards the end of last year, and we are planning to have his Court of Honor soon.

Momreads: is there any way for your son to do an overnight with the team? DS did a few of these for his sport and they were quite helpful.

Colla1… I think getting a call from a prof is a great news. When I come to think of it, 6 years ago I remember getting a call for my daughter… but it was to set-up an interview. Since UCLA to send invitations for regent’s very soon, around January 31 based on CC threads on that subject, it could be for one of those. Either case, it is a very good sign.

Well, Son '14 ended the suspense. As we sat at lunch, he told me that he would be calling the track and field/cross country coach at the U. of Alabama in Huntsville. He wanted to run in college, liked the academics and thought it was a good fit. Needless to say, we were thrilled for him. He admitted that he had a tough choice, but he was all smiles when he made that call.

Good for him (and you).

I don’t doubt that expatSon will manage to defer his decision 'til late April.
My birthday’s mid-April and, if he hasn’t decided by then, I’m gonna tell him that his decision would make a splendid present.

Whether my S has a hard time with the decision really depends on who accepts him. If choice #1 accepts him- it’s a no brainer. If choice #2 accepts him- again, no brainer. It’s after that where things get muddier.

Well, then, momreads, you can join me on the dock as the Indecision sets sail. Congratulations.

Congrats momreads! How nice to have a decision that you’re all happy with!

DD has 4 acceptances with scholarships, 3 to honors colleges. But she doesn’t really have a favorite and is waiting for a 5th to come at the end of the month. I was hoping she’d be able to come up with a favorite of those 4 or 5 and then wait for the others but who knows! I’ve got to go over the accepted students days again to figure it all out.

momreads - congratulations on having a happy decision! I so envy you!

I gave d a “job” today - go onto facebook and the colleges class of 2018 pages and just start looking at what other kids are posting to get a little feel for things. She actually went one step further and started cleaning up her fb pictures - the ones she say she knows look weird.

I decided today she would feel way more better being proactive than to pretend it isn’t happening. I realize she needs to visit a few schools to make a decision. I have a dark horse is coming up from behind…why on earth she’d want to go someplace uber cold is beyond me.

Her brother who is up in frozen tundra country called to tell me he wore his pj’s under his clothes, his 3 layer northface coat and all accessories and still froze going to class.

Not so fast, my friend. Last year, the undecided 13ers’ parents had the rest of us work as deckhands on the USS Indecision, serving drinks in roller skates. Now, I can’t vouch for meatspace, but just among us chickens, some of those folks were virtually drunk for a month.

More seriously, congrats to those of you with happy, decided kids. If you want a good laugh check out pages 1450 to about 1650 of the 2013 thread, chronicling the annual sailing of the USS Indecision, and rest assured that we all reached a pleasant port somewhere.
