Congratulations, momreads! So glad your son will continue running with a smile on his face.

I wish decisions were made by 3/1 instead of 4/1. I have a feeling we will be doing some last minute visits since go2girl is more of a left brain than right brain thinker. She laughs at me when I say, trust your intuition! Of course, this is the same kid who is the last to order at a restaurant for fear of gettting a bad meal.

I just wish we could board the SS Indecision now so the deciding can begin!

Hope everyone is getting a break with the apps. in.

K2 made a decision from all of the EA results (and one deferred) and bought a sweatshirt.

So I guess the RD app and the deferred status on one won’t matter.
We have advised K2 to have the hs send the transcripts of 1st semester to those 2 schools in case someone changes their mind…

Now to keep someone from too much of a sr slump…

Congratulations to all on the acceptances and honors. I have not forgotten about posting information about deferrals. I am just swamped working and will try to do it it over the weekend.

Before I forget- during this forum’s discussion about Bed Bath and Beyond I don’t believe I saw anyone mention The Container Store. They are like BBB- you buy the things here and they ship them to their location in your college town for free. Sign up now to get on their email list. Sometime in May they send out a 30% discount coupon and an invite to their “College Night”. This event is a lot of fun. Our Container Store would decorate “dorm rooms” to show off their products. They had a dj spinning music and had refreshments and giveaways and raffles. When a student would walk in they would announce “Here isxx and they are attending xx college”. The student would then put a pin in a giant map of the US to represent them at college. You got 30% off what you bought that night. If you didn’t need the item you could return it. It is nice to have an additional options.

As far as our house the ship will have to sail without us. My DD received news on Jan. 4 that she was accepted to Georgia Tech. Although she would think of schools as “her top 5” I knew deep down it was her first choice. I was crying tears of joy and she said “mom please can I enroll”. I made her wait a few days but last week she enrolled. We are done and it is so nice!! She went 9 for 10 with acceptances. What is funny is that she received her first denial the day after she enrolled. Where I would have been so upset like with her brother; this time around I was “whatever” and could care less.

On Tuesday she signed up for housing and I cried while she did it. My DD is the last one and we are close. I can’t believe she will be gone so soon. So I hope to develop a habit of drinking Sweet Tea in the months to come. Yesterday the box of Georgia Tech “swag” arrived and today she wore the sweatshirt; Toms and took the car decal. I will put my “GT Mom” when I get my car washed this week.

For those of you waiting hang in there. My DS in 2010 decided to wait until 11:59 p.m. on April 30 to decide. His college then proceeded to lose his enrollment which lead to a very stressful week. Fortunately his dad took a time-stamped picture of DS putting the letter in the post office box so we had proof. He potentially could have lost his full-ride. Perhaps that is why I am so happy DD had enrolled now.

Congratulations itsv for getting your D’s first choice.

Down here wait will be long as we don’t here anything till late March.
My be I should go and sign up for BBB while waiting… first I have to make a list of what we need to buy. I need to keep myself busy.

Midyear reports – would the schools my S has been accepted to EA want one? His semester just ended and the GC sent around an email saying they need to fill out a form if they want midyear reports sent. I told him to just list all his schools to be safe, because his grades this semester are excellent. But I’m thinking he probably doesn’t need to send them to schools he has already been accepted to. I know they’ll want year-end grades, but do they want midyear also? I know I should tell him to look them all up, but… we’re both feeling pretty lazy right about now :)

Umm, if you put me in roller skates, you aren’t going to want what’s left over of the drinks…

Perhaps I ought to be assigned somewhere else… maybe behind the bar fixing the drinks ('cept I’ve never done that before, so would need an experienced mentor if you actually want the drink you think you’re getting when you order).

Congrats to the many with good news of all sorts! May there be more coming this spring!!!

Thanks so much for all the good wishes, everyone! Son '14 is so thankful this is over. Making this decision on schools lifts a weight from his shoulders and maybe, just maybe, he can enjoy the rest of his senior year – I say that as he prepares to take three more APs this semester. The best thing about this? This was HIS decision. He had lots and lots of options, and he could have waited until all the results were in, but he was so tired of college visits, phone calls, e-mails, etc. He decided that the madness had to end, not us (although we are so glad he made that choice).

BTW, he was all smiles with the UAH track and field t-shirt I presented to him after his decision. Yeah, Mom anticipated this one.

Now he said he looks forward to going to school (whenever we return as we’re out all week with snow and ice) and visiting with his AP English teacher. She put up a big paper tree in the hallway about six or so weeks ago with the words, “Class of 2014 branching out.” She invites all seniors, once they have made their college choice, to cut out a leaf. Then, they put their name and school on that leaf and hang it on the tree.

Congrats to the decision makers! I’m so jealous too! It came to light yesterday the rest of the schools we haven’t heard from are not in the running anyway, she’s just curious if she can get in. Now it’s a matter of visiting some of them.

The question is, should we wait for admitted student days or just go and tour ourselves? We start our first admitted student day next Friday, but the one she’s most interested in isn’t until the end of March. Having never gone to those days I don’t know if they’re more informative than just touring and sitting in on classes alone.

D got the package in the mail yesterday from Roanoke College officially confirming her attendance to their scholarship competition. We’ll be going down on February 17th. She’s very exicted…as I am for more $$ :-)…She’s already been conversing with some of the students on the Roanoke College Class of 2018 FB page and might have already found a potential roommate. But it’s way too early for that. We’ve visited Roanoke this past December and she really enjoyed the visit and loved the school. Unfortunately we won’t be able to attend the admitted students day since it on the weekend of her school play (she got the lead role). Anyway, best of luck to everyone else waiting for decisions.

scsiguru: One of the math teachers at my son’s HS is a Roanoke College grad, and she just raves about the school. The academics are excellent. Small classes. Nice dorms. Good food. She tried to encourage my son to consider the place, but he thought it was just a bit small. Wishing your daughter much luck with the scholarship competition!

momreads…thank you for the encouragement!! My D applied to six schools and got accepted at 5 with one deferral. Out of all the schools that accepted her only Roanoke has had regular contact with her. In fact, her admissions counselor talks to her regularly and even called her and provided some insight into the scholarship competition. I think most kids today appreciate that type of attention and feedback…at least my D does. My D attends a really small HS (her senior class has 28 kids). She likes the small school atmosphere and actually looked at schools that do not have a very large student body.

scsiguru, that admissions attention made all the difference. It’s what swayed my oldest to come to my employer. They could’ve easily said, well she’s got tuition covered, so we don’t have to try, but they rolled out the red carpet anyway. It was very impressive to see my colleagues in action rather than just hear about what they do.

Everyone, I’d like to tell you all how enlightening this board has been. It’s easy to be cowed when your kid isn’t applying to anyplace anybody here ever mentions. You start to wonder, is she aiming too low? Are we looking at inferior schools. But, as I’m looking up colleges that I see identified here, colleges that get regular mention on cc, what I’m seeing is that SO MANY of them are EXACTLY like the schools d’14 has applied to, whose names are never uttered on these forums. The only difference I can see is the Midwest location (and I do mean west of the Mississippi). With the exception of a very few schools, it’s like my neck of the woods may as well not exist in the higher education universe. But it does. And the schools are identical to where the kids on the left and right coasts are headed. Anyway, that’s my daily observation. And it’s making me giggle a little bit.

I agree strongly that one of the wonderful aspects of this thread is the wide range (in the broadest sense of the word) of colleges to which kids have applied and about which they’re thrilled. It’s also wonderful to vicariously experience the positive pieces of this whole experience for kids who are getting near the end of it. I do want to mention, as I’ve noted previously, that from my perspective there are still too many notes on the thread where the names of the schools are omitted. I guess that folks have their reasons for this, but especially when the process is over, i.e., one’s child is enrolled, I personally don’t get it. It certainly adds to my database (I have a S16 still coming down the pike) to know what schools kids and parents have found that work for them.

That all said, specific schools named or not, this has been a wonderful thread to read.

This thread seems to be the most active one. All the UC school-specific threads are very silent. I could even hear the pin drops falling (or may be hair pulling).

My S 2014, he (we) applied to 9 (all UC’s) 1 is in and 8 more to go.
My D 2008, she applied to 5… some in-state and some out of state.

It is great to hear all the wonderful news about college acceptances and decision-making! My D and I are making a whirlwind trip to UGA and Clemson next weekend. UGA for their Scholar Initium Day and Clemson for a regular tour. We are from Northern California, and my D has these 2 schools in her top 3, along with University of Texas. She wants big school spirit, football, and lots of major options. Many of her friends are waiting on the UC’s so she is kind of ahead of the game as far as getting close to a decision.

If anyone familiar with the above schools has advice on places to eat or go that will give us a good vibe of the schools, I would love to hear it.

Today is her last day as a first semester Senior - boy how the time flies!

Congratulations on all of the wonderful acceptances, decisions, and scholarship opportunities! It’s fun being able to share good news discretely!

Celebratory day at our house today. G’ma, D, and I will head to a favorite lunch spot for some awesome diet-busting comfort food of burgers and bottomless fries to mark the end of 1st semester finals! I ran an extra mile this am to somewhat mitigate the anticipated calorie intake coming. What a very long few months it’s been…

D and I discussed that she will be 7/8 of the way finished with high school after today. She has extreme senioritis and is ready for college now. Happily, she got accepted to one of her top two schools late Dec., so the pressure is off. Now she just needs to wait until mid/end of March to hear from the other favorite…

The end of the K-12 journey is nearing and I’m really looking forward to the next big adventure this fall!

Gigem - Greenville is where you want to stay if you are visiting Clemson. It is the most charming little town, great little restaurants and shops. Apparently rated as one of the top places to retire. There are lots of rooftop open restaurants to sit amongst the oak trees and spanish moss dripping off it. It has a great kitchen store, think independent Williams Sonoma.

If I were to bet money I’m going to say Clemson will win over UGA. If she’s looking for school spirit I just don’t think Clemson can be beat. Kids all wear their school gear, seemed everyone was so friendly and happy.

I actually think the decision in this house is going to come down to Auburn and Univ of New Hampshire. hahaha Who besides my daughter would be torn between the deep south and the frozen tundra north?
