Parents of the HS Class of 2014

Okay - help me not pull out my hair here. Yesterday we eliminated a school, but by the evening put it back on the list. She insisted she wasn’t bothered by the cold, but the past few days all she’s doing is complaining about how cold it is outside. I sure think it’s a lot harder at a college than it is a house when the weather is a factor - you can’t help but have to walk around campus, at home you get in the car in the garage and pull right up to the door.

And my sis has a friend whose very cute son attends one of her top choices that we’re going to see next week. She suggested they meet, even if for 15 min to get his perspective of the school - from someone not selling us on it. She thought that was weird and embarrassing and doesn’t want to do it. sigh

Congrats to all those getting Presidential scholarship applications! Sounds nice but hard work! DD was working on a scholarship application last night that asked for her first choice school - umm - she doesn’t have one! She couldn’t figure out whether to put one down where she was already in with a nice merit package or one she hasn’t been accepted to yet that she needs merit/money to attend if she gets in. I was thinking the latter was the better choice.

In other news, she finally has all her interviews scheduled. One tomorrow afternoon, two next week and one this Saturday. That one should be interesting as she’s attending an area Student Council “Lock In” Friday night to Saturday morning (7 pm to 7 am) where they’ll be up all night! Hoping she’ll get some sleep when she gets home before the interview. I did tell her at least she’ll have something to talk about and a good excuse if she’s tired. But really hoping it goes well! And one of the Ivy’s is coming to interview the 3 kids from her school who have applied. It’s being done at the school after school. I thought that was a bit weird but I guess it’s easier for the interviewer. Hopefully it will work out okay for DD also.

It’s still cold here! It was nicer yesterday but it’s bad again today. I am sooo ready for spring!

@BarnardMom - just trying the @ deal to get the hang of it - you know, playing with the new toys… My avatar was actually one created by my hubby for me many moons ago for a travel forum I frequented often. I still like it, so opted to use it here too.

@crowlady - that works for particular threads. I don’t see how I can use it for the Eckerd College or U Rochester forums… it can be pretty quiet on those, but occasionally someone posts and I used to have a nice yellow circle I could see to let me know to look there. Now there’s nothing (unless, again, I haven’t figure out all the features of the new site yet). I’d love to know if anyone knows.

I was clueless about the Presidential Scholar honor so looked it up (obviously my DS did not get nominated LOL). Congratulations to all nominees. Interestingly, there is a list of all nominees so I did a quick count of kids from DS’s school - 43. I also noted three of his middle school friends who are at other high schools.

@Creekland I agree, we should ask for a way to bookmark an entire forum. Anybody else figure out how to quickly check for new messages in ANY thread for a forum? They should bolden the letter or name of the colleges here if there’s new stuff: <a href=“Colleges and Universities A-Z - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/colleges-universities/</a></p>

I was also clueless about the Presidential Scholar honor so I also looked it up. No kids from D14’s school. Or county! I am a bit confused about how they qualify, because I know some of the kids have 36 ACT’s.

Kids with a 36 ACT should automatically qualify in any state, is my understanding. I wonder if states are allowed to set their own criteria.

Wikipedia says:

The list is here, for those curious: http://www2.ed.gov/programs/psp/2014/candidates.pdf</a></p>

Only 2 from our HS.

You mentioned that students applying to UCLA might hear this week…I thought decisions came out in March? Did I miss something?.[\quote]

@CLOSF2014, It was based on the past posts. UCLA to begin sending letters for Regent’s and Chancellor’s candidates end of the month and UCB around the second week of February. My 2008 got letters around that time. I don’t know whether there will be a change to the schedule this year.

@2018DAD, Thanks for the information

I think last year, UCLA sent those letters 1st week of February. Berkeley, 2nd week of Feb.

Also, UCLA sends likely letter to Eng’g applicants first or second week of March.

So excited – my S got accepted to U Maryland’s Scholars Program! It isn’t his top choice at this point but it is nice to have a great option to consider.

D is telling me about all her friends who must have just found out about UMD. Congrats!

Congrats to your S, @crowlady!

Congratulations @crowlady!

Thanks for the link to the list! Two of DD’s friends from her hometown school are named!

Congrats to you DS re UMaryland Crowlady! Fear the Turtle.

The old code to quote is as follows: [ quote=screenname] cut and paste the copy you are quoting here

[/quote]

Delete the space between the first bracket and "quote=screenname] The finished product will look like this:

Thank you @AvonHSDad

Is there a way to highlight [make it bold] the text?

[ b] and /b will give you bold text.
And you can use i for italics & u for underline.

And you can mix and match

Snow day here today for everyone, not just the kids!! Cleared a path for the dogs using a garden shovel and a broom. :> The path for the people is next. Maybe.

Son has a clear favorite school, but is waiting for two schools with April 1 results. That is a LONG time from now! So we are in a holding pattern

He seems a bit down lately, wondering if it is normal to be a little sad at the thought of going away to college?
