Parents of the HS Class of 2014

This morning’s breakfast discussion–Should school districts allow students to have an excused day off or not for tomorrow’s big parade? D14 will be at the parade with her parents permission. Why not? Her mother is a lifelong/long-suffering Cubs fan and we moved to Seattle before the Bears won the Super Bowl in '85, so who knows if this opportunity will ever present itself to our family again??? I say “go for it”.  :D

@momofwon: Thank goodness for the new avatars, or I wouldn’t know which parade you meant! (And your username means much more this week…) Yes, I think students should be excused - it’s a once-in-a-lifetime event.

Regarding local scholarships…I am tempted to open accounts at many credit unions. They seem to be the only ones around here offering scholarships, but to members and family only.

Hadn’t thought about the appropriateness of my user name until you mentioned it MImama. Nice! Destiny or was it just that momofone was taken a year ago???

I say go to the parade and enjoy! I’ve never been but DS’11 has been to the ones in Boston and they’re a memorable experience. And I’ve had that same thought about credit unions! All our accounts are at one but they don’t give out scholarships! But there is one that gives out scholarships to non-employee kids who aren’t members. The rest are all member required.

momofwon, tell your D to go for it. It is important to enjoy life too.

The credit unions have good scholarships, but they almost always require opening the account at least three months before the deadline.

One thing I noticed on my iphone is that, if I “reload” a few collegeconfidential pages, especially the 2014 parents page, the page looks different and shows the line numbers. It is nice to see the page numbers. Not sure if it is a “feature” of collegeconfidential or safari.

I also agree with the parade consensus. YOLO!!!

I’m a college professor and occasionally meet with prospective students. What really impresses me more than a thank you note is something like a note that says, “I really enjoyed our chat. I’m sending along an article I think you might like / a review of that film that we talked out / that link to that website I mentioned” or “On your advice, I checked out that novel I really like it,” etc. It’s great if you find a way to connect with the interviewer and can then reinforce that connection in the note. They’ll be more likely to remember you.

@momofwon, our son is going to the parade with friends - an unexcused absence, but no penalties from home. A school that I volunteer at has called a snow day for tomorrow! (For those elsewhere, there ain’t no snow here.)

Just found this thread…so glad to know I am not alone in my worry. I have identical twins in the process. Everything X2. And then the inevitable one in/one not is bound to happen many times over as we approach end of March. For now, we are in harmony but I know it’s the calm before the storm.

Regarding Community Scholarships- it has been pulling eye teeth to get S14 to complete them. But they are all very similar. He has 3 stock essays that he tweeks, cuts and pastes to fit the prompt. We have a community foundation that has literally over 100 scholarships offered. They work through one application and rank their candidates then make sure that each recipient only gets one from the list. S qualified for and applied for 8 of those and 6 from fraternities, sororities, and non-profits in the area. We will see how he makes out.

So I need to fill out FAFSA for S11 and S14, CSS for S14, and something new called Need Access (?!?) which I have never heard off for S11. Heaven help me!

Welcome @3tallblonds!

Are there post numbers anymore? Sometimes I would refer a post to someone, but that is difficult now bc I don’t see numbers.

Previously, I was able to subscribe to a “forum” not just a thread - does the “new” cc still have that feature?

Perhaps they should call it a “snow-job” day! Enjoy the parade & the celebration!

DH’s enthusiasm for filling out the financial aid forms is quickly waning and he hasn’t even begun!

Our son found out last Thursday he was accepted by his first choice, UNC-Chapel Hill! He’s our oldest so this is so exciting for all of us. (For those of you who remember my thread from last spring–at the time I never thought this day would come!)

Now onto the financial aid process…

Congrats to NCdad’s son!

Congratulations to your son, NCDad! Very exciting.

Welcome, 3tallblonds!

@3tallblonds I can’t imagine the competition between twins! I have a son and a daughter, ten school years apart, attended different schools from one another all the way from K-12 and even they compare themselves! And they didn’t even apply to ANY of the same schools! Nor do they have the same interests!

Congrats NCDad and son!
