DS got the NMF letter! Also, he was selected to lead a group of juniors on a social services project . He is going to write an email to a few regional admissions officers . . . any excuse to touch base.

@glido - Congratulations to your DS!! What a great way to start the decision-making countdown.

@spritle and initiatelaunch - enjoy your JMU visits! Tough decisions ahead.

No school here in VA. Have not received the call about tomorrow, but we will be closed. But before the snow came down, Son '14 ran in his conference indoor track championships. Outside. In 24-degree temps. Finished second in the 1600 without any practice because of the flu and other snow events for 10 days. His coach told him not to push it since he had been sick … and already had qualified for the state meet. While we may not have school, he has plenty of homework to do since teachers are posting online their assignments. As for me, I’ll enjoy the fire in the pellet stove, clean the house and cross stitch gifts.

Regarding JMU and CNU, yes, they are very different. Have lots of former students who attended both schools. JMU has lots of school spirit, good food (very essential in the decision making) and variety of majors. My former students spend the first year on campus before moving into off campus apartments. CNU continues to expand its facilities. The dorms are nice. Beautiful woodwork in many buildings. Nice scholarship money ($2k-$5k each year) for the honors or leadership programs, but while you can participate in both, you only get money from one. Son '14 liked the school, but he really prefers to go to a place with no one that he knows. That will force him to crawl out of his shell and meet others. He said there are eight or nine kids alone from his high school attending CNU in the fall.

DS and DD are out shoveling the 15" of snow we got overnight here in No. VA. DH is stuck out in California and will be home a day later than planned. No announcement about school for Friday, but I am assuming it will be cancelled, given that parts of our county are very rural-like with narrow, hilly roads with no sidewalks (like our neighborhood). It’s hard enough for a school bus to come down our neighborhood, much less try to do it with large piles of snow everywhere and nowhere for the kids to stand.

I will be making hot chocolate for the kiddos after they come in from the snow. I kind of wish DS had picked a warm and sunny beach for Spring Break instead of London since I could sure look forward to a tropical vacation! Maybe I’ll make an umbrella drink and pretend.

@2014novamom pretty funny - we picked to go to London for spring break, then d waffled and now we’re going to the Caribbean instead. We’re out of school here too, but it’s about 3 inches of snow and slush. I’m quite certain school will be off tomorrow too.

Congratulations glido!!! I started reading from the first page of this thread yesterday when “reloading” didn’t take me to the last page on my iphone before sleeping. I started on this thread not too long ago, it was a fun read. Does any one else find it annoying to login to pages on iphone? Now that CC required special characters and numbers in the password, I can’t get it right and gave up trying to login to CC on my iphone.

Congrats glido and Momreads!

It sounds like some of you have great Spring Break plans. I’m envious! I would love to be in the Caribbean at the moment. I miss the sunshine terribly. We are just heading to the mountains for a few days during break… I’m trying to leave the beginning of break open for some last minute college trips depending on the results from April 1st.

I too find CC on the iphone extremely annoying. I don’t have problems logging into the site, but the page tabs do not appear at the bottom of the threads. I have to scroll through each page to reach the end of thread, which is very time consuming.

Are you all talking about the CC app on the iPhone? I can’t even get that to work anymore. I can just access CC through Safari. Does anyone know how to get the app to work?

I don’t think the app is working at all (at least not the last time I checked). But using Safari on the iPhone is a pain, like overtheedge said. I can’t read this forum because I am NOT going to scroll through 656 pages to get to the last page.

Our spring break plans include going North to Michigan to visit two schools. How I would much rather be going to the Caribbean or somewhere warm instead - that would also mean that a decision was made! Still holding on to the 5 acceptances and 1 that we’re waiting on. Why would he want to mark any off his list??? ;)

I wish they would get the apps working again. I use both the Android and iOS versions (phone and iPad) and they were so convenient for reading on the go.

I was able to follow this forum on safari by doing “reload” and got to see the page numbers. That was my best workaround and it is not working anymore.

@momreads - Congrats to your son. That’s pretty impressive, especially after being sick with the flu.

So jealous that ya’ll are going somewhere fun, and or warm, for spring break. We are staying close to home, although we may pop up to British Columbia for a few days. I don’t want to spend any money traveling in the event Spygirl is accepted to her out of state options and wants to attend admitted student days.

Hi all, just checking in. I’ve been lurking lots because I’ve been so busy with work. With S1 I was a regular but this time around, I just didn’t have the time & energy to post much. Want to congratulate everybody on their kid’s admissions, merit awards, and national merit. and also a special congrats to Avondad on the birth of his grandchild! =D>

No spring break here at all unless you count having Good Friday off. All the rest got pulled as make up snow days, of which, today was another (snow day) of course. I’m hoping tomorrow will just be a delay, but we’ve had so many delays as well this year that one wonders exactly how much learnin’ is going on…

We’re into June already for graduation and we haven’t even finished half of Feb or any of March. Who knows how late school could go this year…

@Creekland—I doubt this will be any comfort, but we can go until June 30th! I think today was the sixth snow day. We suffered four power outages in the space two and a half years (Sandy and Irene and two others that hit coastal CT hard). I think we will have more snow days this year than those school years that had weeklong power outages. (Power restored to schools faster than to all houses so schools reopened ASAP.) Of course, I shouldn’t jinx things by even referencing power outages!

Snow day here too but I can’t remember which number. Right now it’s pouring rain on top of about 3-4 inches of snow. It won’t be easy to clear the driveway! I shoveled the front walk and steps when I took the dog out at noon before it changed over. Maybe the rest will all wash away? DD is doing homework even though this is the first “non-work” snow day she’s had. Vacation is next week and we’ll spend it looking at 3 accepted schools. Should be lots of snow at two of them! April vacation will probably be spent visiting other schools unless she’s decided before then. It seems like April 11-13th are big accepted students days so maybe we’ll have decisions after that time. Just don’t know how she can see them all the same weekend!

Spring Break should be quiet here, too. go2girl is still waiting to hear if she made finalist for two scholarships. If she makes the cut, she will be flying to two different cities for interviews. She leaves Saturday for Nashville–relieved that they are not caught in the storm. Since nothing is a done deal until it’s a done deal, trying to stay open. So pruod to see so many NMF’s in our little forum. Congratulations to the kids and their supportive parents! Well done! And to those recently receiving good news of admissions, again, congratulations. Stay safe if you’re in stormlandia!

Ok… I thought it was just me when trying to get to the last page of posts on my I-phone, UGH!!! I think it is weird that they disabled to app’s and no one has any idea when it will be back up again. I loved reading CC late in bed on my phone… and on the go…

I don’t think it is a coincidence that there are a lot of parents of NMF’s here! My S is a third generation finalist. His grandfather (my husband’s father) was born on an Indian reservation in Oregon. He got the NM scholarship to go to Carnegie Mellon for math, and eventually earned a PhD. A success story!

We’ve now rebooked our weekend flights for the second time, still hoping to get to at least two of the three colleges we’d planned to visit. It’s so complicated to change everything but we are determined.

On my Android phone I use the mobile website on Chrome instead of the apps. When I go to my bookmarked threads it pops me right to the end automatically. Actually, I’ve been checking so frequently :-p I don’t know if it takes me to the first unread post or to the end, but it is easy to go back a page.

Still not possible to bookmark a whole forum, though, so bookmarks aren’t the only answer.
