@CT1417 I remember going until June 23rd or 24th back in my high school days in NY too. I didn’t like it then either. A couple of my classmates had to leave for military academy things before we had graduation! That always seemed so wrong…

Happy Valentines Day to everyone for tomorrow…

Does anyone remember the Blizzard of '78 in the northeast? It hit one week before Winter Break and knocked out our power for a week so we were out of school for a week for the blizzard/power outage and then another week for the actual school break. We were in school until June 30th that year, but NY schools always started the Wed after Labor Day so we were probably only in a week to ten days longer than originally scheduled. The teachers didn’t know what to do with us by the end. I wasn’t in HS so I don’t recall how it impacted graduation.

We just keep moving the grad date back here with each snow day. Grad is the last day of school, no matter what.

Okay I do not want to make all of you facing snow days jealous but out here in California it is 80 degrees and I am wearing shorts. In fact I had to give the plants extra water since they do not know what to make of this weather. Of course both children will be or have been attending college outside of California because they “wanted seasons”. I do feel sorry for many of you not knowing when school will end. They are predicting droughts out here so if all of you could ship your melted snow my way that would be appreciated.

The snow is really screwing up many robotics teams during this build season because teams can’t work on their robots during school. FIRST announced they will not give those teams extra time.

Congrats on the NMF. There are some great scholarships out there for that award.

I hope the weather stops and your children get to return to school soon.

@ct1417 - I remember the storm clearly. I was 12 years old (I see you all doing the math in your head now) and we were on our way to my first ever real vacation sailing through the BVI’s with friends of our family who moved to Saudi Arabia. We drove to the airport in the blizzard. I don’t remember how long we had to wait at the airport but I do remember being so happy to land in Puerto Rico.

Graduation is still June 21 and that won’t change even though school has now been extended to the 24th. Seniors don’t have to attend any days that extend the school year and in fact many of them already have their beach week houses booked starting that weekend. We go very late here so a couple of DS’s friends who have service academy appointments can only come to beach week for a few days before they need to report.

Lots of Olympics viewing today, and a big warm pot of chili for dinner!

@eyemamom–you got out of town just in time! We sailed the BVI nearly twenty years ago, escaping a brutal NYC winter. What a fabulous vacation.

Watching Twitter trying to predict school closing vs delay tomorrow. Hope all travelers are able to make it to their destination. We are here in town for winter sport practice–ugh!

We’re trying to predict what school will do tomorrow as well. Expected NMF letter still has not arrived – will call tomorrow just so I don’t have to worry anymore ;-)

Good luck to go2girl at Vandy this weekend!

I don’t remember the blizzard of 79’, but I do remember the blizzard of 83’ in the Northeast. I was living off campus and we had to dig ourselves out of our house- the snow was piled up to the top of the front door.

The one good thing about this cold is that it has made D rethink some of her college choices. She has lived in the South her entire life, but was convinced she wanted 4 seasons and snow. I kept telling her that it may not be as idyllic as she imagines. After a few weeks of unseasonably cold weather in our locale, a few schools have dropped down on her list.

@itvs - I’m jealous!

To clarify prior post: I am using safari on iPhone to access CC (not app) and it sucks.

@overtheedge—you should put her on a plane up north and she may drop a few more schools off her list! Of course, you probably won’t be able to arrange a flight due to all the cancellations….

I just got the message that school is on for tomorrow without delay! I feel like we’ve been so out of sorts with all the schedule disruptions. I look forward to a return to normalcy.

I hope the rest of you can return to school soon. Sending warm thoughts your way!

I definitely remember the Blizzard of ‘78! I was in high school in Providence and it took our carpool 3 hours to go about two miles (trying to get to the suburbs). Never made it home that night and spent the night in a friends’ father’s office near the highway. Stranded people kept coming off the highway to use the phones to call home because there were no cell phones. The next day friends from school came out in snowshoes (they lived next door) to rescue us and bring us back to school where we stayed for the next two days. The storm came on a Monday and on Thursday we walked home down the middle of the highway. I was at a private school so we never made up snow days so it wasn’t an issue and I wasn’t graduating anyway. It was definitely an adventure! But I hope I never go through it again and hope my kids don’t have to either!

quoting momreads: JMU has lots of school spirit, good food (very essential in the decision making) Sounds like you have met my son. He keeps citing that JMU’s caf is ranked #2.

BTW, how does one quote now? My bookmarked page of examples is gone.

Spring break is gone. The next day to go is Prom Day, when all the primping and coifing takes place prior to the Grand March. :-/ I have no D’s so it’s beyond me.

Initiate – do elaborate on this prom day and Grand March! Our prom is on a Saturday so obviously not a school day. And does everyone march around the grounds in their finery?

There’s no way they would cancel spring break around here. Too many people with plans to go out of town, including college visits and school-sponsored trips. I think parents would march with pitch forks to the School Board in protest and I could very well be one of those.

I also want to hear about the primping day and Grand March. Our prom is on a Saturday. This is the first week since Christmas break that our kids have had school all week. I’m really thankful this most recent storm went south of us. I feel very very lucky this week.

S has had a very good couple of weeks. He got a part in the school play. His quiz bowl team made states. The debate club he founded had their very first debate today and his team won. He was in a very good mood. He got a letter from one of his schools thanking him for applying. There was a handwritten note from the adcon which referenced a part of his essay that she apparently related to. Tonight, he said “I’ll probably go there.” I said “Why?” He said “They really seem to care about me. She wrote that note, remember?”

The state flagship has been contacting either him or I via mail or email almost every day the last two weeks. They are pushing hard for him to accept, although they haven’t pulled the stuff about needing a deposit to go to accepted students days. I read today that Columbia and Harvard applications are both down this year. That surprised me.

@2016BarnardMom – Columbia & Harvard were down slightly (-1.5% for Columbia and -2.1 for Harvard), but I agree that it is surprising to hear of any decline since they all seem to have been increasing annually. I found Dartmouth’s 14% decline and Penn’s 14% increase the most surprising.

The Blizzard of 78 went south of us. I don’t remember a personal impact. The Blizzard of 77, OTOH, took us a super long time to get home from school (parents were driving) as we simply couldn’t see the road at all. Dad was driving and mom had her door open trying to look for cues.

We got roughly 3 feet of snow, but it drifted over the house bringing it up to my sister’s second floor window. We kids wanted to open the window and slide out. Mean ole mom and dad nixed the idea. Our side door was snowed in. Dad could push it open a few inches, so they got buckets and ferried snow to the tub until they created a brief tunnel. It looked really cool. We were mad at dad that he then knocked down the tunnel. Parents! They have such an obsession with danger…

School was closed for two days in a row - the only time it happened in my 13 years of school. Many years we had no snow days at all. Of course, the main reason it was closed the 2nd day was because the state required it. Our superintendent didn’t want to close… Then a weekend came. We were back to school with normal hours on Monday even though there was still a huge amount of snow.

I still laugh at what closes school around here… (southern PA). So do my parents. But I’ll admit to preferring less of a winter. We lived in FL for 5 years and moved back because we missed the change of seasons, so I don’t care to eliminate winter altogether. Winter is a beautiful season - and no bugs! I just like the idea of shortening it.

Middle son almost didn’t choose the college he is now attending due to fears of a more severe winter. Now, as a sophomore, he tells us he’s super glad he didn’t opt out calling his choice “the best decision of his life that he almost didn’t make!”

CT1417: I remember Snow Year 1978. I was a high school senior. We missed 19 days. Had to make up 15. Went to school four times on Saturdays! My husband was a student at the U. of Rochester, his hometown. Had more than 150 inches of snow. BTW, he loves to shovel snow. So does Son '14. The two were out several times yesterday shoveling. No school here. I think we’re up to a dozen days, so there has been a mention of taking some of spring break. That won’t hurt Son '14. because he planned on staying home and working out, as it will be in the middle of spring track season. Some of his classmates, however, have plans to do final college selection visits.

The lasting effect of the conference championships in indoor (but they were outside in 24-degree temps) track will include a doctor’s trip. Son '14 is hacking up his lungs. He believes he has some sort of infection that needs treatment, and this is a kid who never complains about his health. So off to the doctor today.
