Parents of the HS Class of 2014

@momreads–younger son took up track this year. What is with running in five degree weather??? I understand the need to train and all, but sensible limits are needed.

I don’t know where anyone would put 150 inches of snow. It is bad enough here trying to make a turn w/o veering into oncoming traffic. Safe travels everyone!

Yup. Most people new to “indoor” track don’t realize that you can still freeze your ass off at practice. Or that shoveling off the outdoor oval counts as “cross training.”

@momreads…my son is up at Univ of Rochester and he is getting walloped in snow and cold this year. The kid who would never wear a coat, boots, etc actually called me to send up his hats, scarves, gloves and long underwear the second he went back from break.

D got her first rejection today. Since she already picked her school it didn’t sting as much. At one point it was her first choice school. All I can say is I may get a bad rap for hovering over this process, but thank goodness I made her consider “like” schools. She ended up choosing my pick in the end.

SOG—coach has emailed a couple of times this season asking boys to bring shovels & brooms to clean off the track when it has been too dangerous to run on the road. We are just having an unusually cold and snowy winter here in coastal CT. (Well, the rest of the country also, but we wimps are not used to snow that stays on the ground!)

@crowlady, Congratulations to you and your son!!! That’s awesome.

I finally caved in and called National Merit today, confirming that my D has indeed advanced to Finalist, even though neither we nor the school have received any mail… So much for being patient, but at least we can celebrate over the long weekend.

Congrats Crowlady and Profdad (better to call than to be anxious!)

@eyemamom I remember going to visit Univ. of Rochester as a prospective student during a particularly cold and snowy week. I thought it was a great school, but I just couldn’t get past the weather. Glad that your S has a high tolerance for cold! I often wonder how much the weather when one visits a school plays into the decision. A campus just feels different on a crisp fall day than it does in the middle of a blizzard.
With respect to D - good thing Mom knows best :). If only they would always take our advice! My D is especially stubborn!

Congrats to Profdad and crowlady and all the finalists!

School vacation starts today! And apparently another storm is coming this way with more snow for us than the last one! Looks like we’ll get our visit in to Providence College tomorrow and hopefully DD can meet with her interviewer before the storm arrives, even if the time needs to be moved a bit earlier. DS’11 is on his way home (called from the road, “Mom - can you check the closet? Do I have any coats at home?” - No but you can wear your dad’s ski coat! How can you leave without wearing or bringing a coat!) I did my duty and bought mike and bread (mostly because he’s coming home and not for the storm) and enough food to last till Sunday. And then DD and I leave to visit St. Michael’s in Vermont on Sunday night/Monday. Dodging snowstorms! Maybe I should have suggested a school in Florida!!

Chicago (-9.5%) and Georgetown (-2.6%) are also down.

Akmom, I was in Cranston during that '78 blizzard, my senior year. I remember cross country skiing down reservoir avenue! My mom and mil still live in Cranston and my S1 is a student at brown, so I visit every six weeks or so. I went away to college and lived in RI for just one year after marriage, then moved to NY 28 yrs ago. Still love RI! It’s a gem of a state. Snow day here yesterday and 3 hr delay to school today–last day before winter break. I think so far we’ve had 3 or 4 snow days. On days when other schools were closed, ours had a late start. I think that after we lost so many days last year to Sandy, and consequently our spring break, this year our district is being very stingy w snow days.

Six months until d goes to college! She went out tonight on a date, it’s not like hubby and I aren’t alone here ever, but tonight it’s really hitting me. We are going to be alone next year! It will be so weird to not have my d around! I’m already getting pangs of missing her. I called her brother tonight just to touch base. This is what we wanted for them, I’m just not so sure about this next phase.

I called today too. DS is also a NMF as expected. :)

Congratulations to all the NMF finalists!!!

Ok, it hit me today. S left for his last Boy Scout campout as a youth. The next camping trip they have is after his 18th birthday. I can’t deny I got a little misty eyed when I realized that. We had such a mad dash to get him out the door on time that I didn’t get to hear how his special Valentine went over with a young lady. I’ll have to remember to ask on Sunday.

Thanks all. BTW DS just had an interview for one of his colleges. I am a little surprised that some schools are still scheduling them. Don’t know how much difference it makes, but Ds reported it went really well. Now, back to waiting by the mailbox.

SOG: Had to laugh about cross training comment. But CT1417, it is not uncommon for runners to shovel off the track so it can dry. Well, often they do not wait for it to dry. They just run. Now, as for the five-degree practice, not a fan. When Son '14 ran his conference championships, it was 24, but the wind chill made it feel like 20. He did run in the singlet and shorts, too. He was at the doctor’s office yesterday because of the hacking cough left over from the flu. As for running in VA, no way. It’s not happening since we are getting some snow this morning. Maybe the boy will please his parents and do his essays for scholarships.

Received the final acceptance yesterday for ds. Not sure why we were waiting on it since it’s the in-state public he considered a safety and really didn’t want to end up at. After yet another visit this week he seems to be creating a clear #1 vs #2. Next round of drinks on USS Indecision are on me!

USA! USA! USA! (hockey)

@akmom—sounds like you might be dodging New England snow storms. We will be spared the brunt of today’s but Boston & the Cape are in for more snow.

@2018dad—I hadn’t seen the Chicago and G-town stats yet. Clearly I am slipping!

@momreads—new to XC & Track in this house, so I was surprised they run with so much snow on the ground. Residents are required to shovel sidewalks adjacent to their property, but it doesn’t always happen, and only the busiest of roads have sidewalks, so the boys run in the road. It worries me but they all seem to have come through the season intact. I think the request to shovel the actual track was for days that even the coach thought it unsafe to run on the roads.

Congrats to all the NMFs.
